Is Winston a Hero? A hero is a person who, in the face of danger, displays courage and sacrifices himself/herself, and that is what Winston is. Not only does he utter words nobody dares to even think, “DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER” (20), he also plans to rebel in front of telescreens and sacrifices himself to bring Big Brother down. As seen throughout 1984, Winston is courageous in the face of danger, because he thinks not only for himself but also for others. Winston discusses rebellion in front of the telescreen after “O’Brien’s remark… [was] intended as a signal, a code word” (158). This is most unusual because this happens, “in front of a telescreen” (158) and not only is it thoughtcrime to think of rebellion, but to talk about it aloud is suicide. Thus illustrating how strongly Winston felt about taking down Big Brother and The Party, as well as his courage to rebel even more so after the jocular remark that is made by O’Brien. Winston has the courage to talk about overthrowing The Party and Big Brother in front of a telescreen just as he has the heart to sacrifice himself, showing his willingness to sacrifice himself. While joining The Brotherhood he says that he is, “‘…prepared… to do anything which is likely to cause demoralization and weaken the power of the Party’” (172). Knowing the consequence of his actions, Winston continues to pursue his ideals when he says, “they’ll shoot me I don’t care they’ll shoot me in the back of the neck I don’t care down with big brother” (19). This not only shows the courage he has to rebel against Big Brother and The Party, but it also shows the bravery he has to continue rebelling because he knows that even if he were to stop at this point he would still have to endure the same consequence; a bullet “in the back of the neck”
