1984 Reading Response After reading the first book of 1984 by George Orwell there are many things I like and understand and a few things that are confusing and things I don’t like as much. The concept of the book is very interesting as it takes place in a futuristic world (not really anymore since it is 2016 now). I really enjoy how the book was written in 1949. and now that that year has passed the reader can compare and contrast what is true about what Orwell thought the future would be like. For example, in 1984, according to the book, everything is monitored by Big Brother. “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption said, while the dark eyes looked deep into Winston's own.” This emphasizes how everyone and everything they do is being watched.

This world Orwell creates casts light on the psychological manipulation in totalitarian societies that leads to so many other infringements of human nature such as the ability to think for oneself and form your own opinions. The internal conflict that also takes place in this book was between the two ideas, democracy and totalitarianism. Upon my reading of the novel 1984, I was fascinated by George Orwell’s vision of the future. Nineteen Eighty-Four was written in the past yet seems to show very interesting parallels to some of today’s societies. Orwell explains many issues prominent throughout the book in which his main characters attempt to overcome. He shows how surveillance can easily corrupt those in control and how those in control become corrupt by the amount of power. Those with power control the society and overpower all those below. The novel shows what could potentially happen to our current society if power ends up leading to corruption.
1984 is a very well written novel by George Orwell. It portrays a society much different than the one we live in today. The reason I titled this paper “mixed emotions” is due to the fact that much like the public this book keeps you thinking. The main character Winston Smith works in the records department of the Ministry of Truth. That sentence alone sums up this book. It paints a picture of what kind of occupancies the people in this society possess. So although this book has been greatly degraded for its sexuality and criticism of communism, 1984 in most people minds one of the greatest books you will ever read.
