In the story, the book states how they control power, but not why. What do you think is the central secret, the original motive as to why the government looked for total power? (
If you lived in the society of 1984, how do you think you would’ve done as a member of the outer party? If I were to be born in a society such as 1984, I would definitely not be the same person I am today. Today, I have my own unique thoughts, am capable of thinking for myself and have critical thinking skills. This all came to me through opportunities that forced me to think. In a society where ideologies are drilled into you, and where critical thinking and free thought are looked down upon, I feel like I would be like the majority of the youth in the dystopian society of 1984. I already tend to listen to authority in our society, and hearing a lot of propaganda and seeing everyone

As no one from the generation after the revolution could remember the final line, it showed that the truth lies in the old generation left. But the only pre generation Winston met has allegiance to Big Brother and is a part of the thought police. Once Charrington and all pre Big Brother people die, all culture from before will die. Later on, the final lyrics given by Charrington foreshadowed something that will happen in Winston’s future. “Here comes a candle to light you to bed, here comes a chopper to chop of your head!” When Winston finally understood how the government functions, they take him away. Now he will suffer a literal death or a death from the inside. The poem seemed so innocent at first, but as we got more lines, we saw the true nature of it. Just like we saw the true nature of Mr. Charrington. There is also a call back to when Julia offers to clean the St. Clement’s portrait, but decides not to, which may have lead to her seeing the telescreen behind the
In Oceania, love is cast aside and adoration for Big Brother is put in its place. Two people, Winston and Julia, developed a love for one another that is distinct from relationships in Oceania. These lovers must meet in secret and pretend that they do not know one another while they are in public. Due to their circumstances, the two experience isolation from the other citizens as a result of their strong emotions. In 1984, the glass paperweight that contains the small coral represents the fragile relationship of Winston and Julia and their forbidden love life.
Many people today are fighters and make attempts to stand up for what they believe in. Another way 1984 impacted us today is that the novel was a prediction of a controlling government. “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever” (page 267). Just like in 1984 they had “telescreens”monitoring their every move, we know there are so many surveillance cameras used everywhere we go. There are also microphones and the government is able to tap their citizens’ phone to monitor what they say. This ties into the main theme
Can you imagine president controlling your life? The constitution use three different forms to make a group or a person from getting too much power on his hands. The are three types of power that each contusion have in order to keep power equal. One of them is Legislative Branch Congress “Can approve Presidential nominations”(Document C). It’s a example how governments try to keep power equal.
Winston Smith is a thirty-nine year old man who participates in a group of the “outer-party,” which is the lower part of the two classes. Smith works in one of the four main government buildings. This building is called the Ministry of Truth; his job is to rewrite history books so those that read them will not learn what the past used to be like. The occupation Winston is the major factor that allows him to realize that Big Brother is limiting people’s freedom. He keeps these thoughts to himself as secrets because the totalitarian party will not allow those of rebellious thoughts around. The tensions between the two grow throughout the book because the Big Brother becomes very suspicious of Winston. The Big Brother becomes so suspicious of Winston that he sends a person by the name O’Brien, to watch over him. Mr. O’Brien is a member of the “inner party,” which in this book is the upper-class. Winston doesn't know of the trap that Big Brother had set tells O’Brien of his own idea and plans. He tells Winston of a rebellious leader that has been rounding up those that want to go against the totalitarian government. But like the Big Brother had done, he set a trap and O’Brien betrayed Winston. During the story the conflict between Big Brother and Winston climaxes when Winston is caught. North Korea, China, and even Cuba are similar to 1984. They try to control their people just the same as in 1984, and just like in Jonestown. The only people who were free in 1984 were the Proles. The community in Jonestown began as everyone wanting to be there, and then as conditions worsened the people wanted to leave. They were not allowed to, much like 1984. The people in both situations are similar, in that they are oppressed by their governments, but only the people in Jonestown are given the ability to think they are even able to
The novel, 1984, written by George Orwell, gives readers an insight to a possible frightening future where one government has complete and definite control of the people. But “control” might not be the term to describe such a rule. The Party dominates every aspect of life. There is not a single thing that is not under the Party’s rule. Feelings, history, language, statistics, and even human nature are submissive to the Party. They corrupt the mind so much that there is no longer a line that separates truth from a lie. Slogans are repeated through telescreens on a daily basis so the people are gradually forced to believe in illogical statements. Upon first glance, it may seem that a 1984 society is not even imaginable in the world we live in currently. But is it really logical to make such an assumption so quickly? Do we know that what we see on the news and read in our history textbooks is completely accurate? The Internet is one of the most powerful technologies our world has, consisting of an insurmountable amount of information, which is not always what it seems. Ultimately, there are so many things that we do not know, some of which is being held a secret from us. Modern day society shockingly has evidence of a transformation into a menacing 1984 society because of similar government actions and abuse of advanced technology.
The novel 1984 over the years has so gained much recognition. This particular novel portrays the image of totalitarian regimes and how they can massively affect the setting wherever this form of government takes initial place. Author George Orwell talks about these dangerous governments in society in mostly all of his novels. George Orwell was one who pushed for social movements such as pushing towards social reform throughout the world. Social reform was a social movement that aimed to make gradual changes, or change in certain aspects of society, rather than rapid or fundamental changes in governments particularly.
The book 1984, by George Orwell is based on the theory of “Big Brother” and how he is always watching you. In the book, the Oceania government controls their citizens by saying and ordering them into not doing certain things. Which then forced their citizens to deceive their government by going in to hiding. When Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, Japanese-Americans were ordered to do certain things as well. Both of these two events prove that the government can force their citizens to do anything under their power. I think some parts of the government abuse the right of their power and manipulate their citizens into doing unlawful events.
A dystopian society can be defined as “a society characterized by human misery”. 1984 by George Orwell and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury both demonstrate dystopian societies. However, that does not mean they do not their differences. In each society the government has different ways of controlling and limiting its citizens for doing only what they want them to do. In 1984, violators are brainwashed into loving and following Big Brother as if they never knew the truth and return back to their everyday lives. Fahrenheit 451 also punishes violators in a way that makes them regret and scared to ever do it again instead of making them forget.
How can someone fully understand a tragedy such as the Holocaust? Many say the event ineffable to anyone who wasn’t there to begin with, but people are still striving to achieve complete or near complete comprehension. In order to do this people have used multiple media like books and recordings but the one that gives “the greatest illusion of authenticity” is movies. The purpose of Holocaust-filmmaking is to help people get a grasp on what it felt like to be in the middle of such a horrific thing as the Holocaust. If this isn’t done, then the true emotions won’t influence the audience who won’t find a way to preserve the history of the Holocaust and memories that took place in those awful times will be lost forever. He got the girl and he is free from party eyes. The reader is content with what has happened in Orwell’s story. However, Orwell proceeds to remind the reader of the true nature of Oceania. “The picture had fallen to the floor , uncovering the telescreen behind it” (Orwell.222). Orwell completely ups the ante, flips the script, and changes the game when he reveals the secret behind Charrington’s upper room, it holds a telescreen and Charrington is a thoughtpolice agent. ”It occurred to Winston that for the first time in his life he was looking, with acknowledge, at a member of the thought police” (Orwell.224). Winston rented the room that he was going to use to rebel against the party from a thought police agent. He had absolutely zero chance from the very beginning. Charrington yells, “And by the way, while we are on the subject, Here comes a candle to light you to bed, here comes a chopper to chop off your head” (224)! Charrington speaks the words that make Winston’s heart stop, referencing a song that had been sung previously in the story. The ending of the song represents the current situation, the thought police have come to get Winston. Suddenly, Winston and Julia have been found out and are captured and tortured by the party. All of the rebellious nature is taken out of Winston and he becomes a loyal party member. Orwell throws the ultimate curveball, which completely changes the reader's thinking, making the reader realize that the room was never safe from the very beginning, and that gaining freedom in Oceania is a hopeless endeavor. Orwell’s true message is that the party always wins, there is no hope. The reader feels all of the evil and tyranny the party invokes and how far they will go to insure that their laws are enforced, their dominance is asserted, and their fear is felt. The room served
Theories of knowledge and power, and the exploration of the relationship between these two intangibles, are not nascent to the field of political philosophy. Francis Bacon first stated that ‘Knowledge is Power’, suggesting that to possess an understanding of something was to exert power over it. However, this also implies that knowledge is subservient to power, and exists as an implement or expression of power. For Michel Foucault, the relationship between power and knowledge is much more intimate and inseparable. While Foucault would certainly accept that to possess knowledge is to exercise power, he uniquely suggests that the corollary also contains truth; namely, the act of exerting control or power provides knowledge. Moreover, our modern society represents a paradigm shift away from (but not the elimination of) the exercise of juridical power, ‘the right to death’, and in turn has come to embrace the exercise of biopolitical control, ‘the power over life’. In other words, Foucault contends that modern systems of control, particularly neo-liberal ideologies, operate to micromanage biopolitical power in order to gain knowledge of, and therefore power over, humanity. Juridical power is best understood as the power of repression, or the power exercised traditional by the Monarch in Classical Liberal societies. The power relations discussed in the works of early Social Contract theorists like Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau explore juridical power; the power to prohibit and punish, to subtract, deduct and supress. Nobody knows what the world will look like in the future. In fact many people might think that the world is going downhill. The societies that we live in could become cold, pollution filling the air and streets, and people becoming miserable and ignorant. A utopia is, “an ideal place or state” (“utopia”). In reality, utopias become dystopias very quickly. A dystopia is “a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding” (“dystopia”). These ideas perfectly describe the society in which the characters in 1984, by George Orwell, live in. Orwell’s purpose of this book was to warn the world to change their ways because people were blindly following leaders like Hitler and Stalin. POWER: Power means the ability to do some work in a qualitative way or to impose something on someone. In the context of organizations, the term POWER means the ability of some individual to impose his/her thoughts or impose some work on others. It plays an essential role in an organization in designing their policies, rules and other conditions. In an organization, as there are a number of people working, so to hold them together, to bring them under one umbrella, to guide them properly or to train them according to the firm’s condition, power plays a vital role. It works by utilizing all the mandatory resources of a firm.
“Power is the capability or the ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events”(Webster). The misuse of power can depend on how high in society a person is to obtain an amount of power. Too much power can be a negative thing for some people to have, because humanity has a long and devastating track record of events that regards to the topic of abusive power. Power can be a negative tool when it’s abused by an individual for retaliation, personal gain, or constant controlling.
