In the story, the book states how they control power, but not why. What do you think is the central secret, the original motive as to why the government looked for total power? (
If you lived in the society of 1984, how do you think you would’ve done as a member of the outer party? If I were to be born in a society such as 1984, I would definitely not be the same person I am today. Today, I have my own unique thoughts, am capable of thinking for myself and have critical thinking skills. This all came to me through opportunities that forced me to think. In a society where ideologies are drilled into you, and where critical thinking and free thought are looked down upon, I feel like I would be like the majority of the youth in the dystopian society of 1984. As no one from the generation after the revolution could remember the final line, it showed that the truth lies in the old generation left. But the only pre generation Winston met has allegiance to Big Brother and is a part of the thought police. Once Charrington and all pre Big Brother people die, all culture from before will die. Later on, the final lyrics given by Charrington foreshadowed something that will happen in Winston’s future. “Here comes a candle to light you to bed, here comes a chopper to chop of your head!” When Winston finally understood how the government functions, they take him away. Now he will suffer a literal death or a death from the inside. The poem seemed so innocent at first, but as we got more lines, we saw the true nature of it. Just like we saw the true nature of Mr. Charrington.
