Orwell’s society in the novel 1984 is one that is run by a manipulative government that lies to the people it rules. The government changes the history to suit its own needs and although the changes are obvious to some, most go along with the changes and act as if nothing has changed. The government tortures rebels, causing them pain and forcing them to face their biggest fears in order to break their rebellious spirit, and brainwashes them into loving the seemingly all-knowing ruler known as Big Brother. In some ways, I see Orwell’s society in our world today, through politics, law enforcement, and social classes. In the novel, the society is run by the Party, or the ruling class. Of the Party, there is the Inner Party and the Lower Party. The Inner Party pretty much just bosses the Lower Party around and keeps them under close surveillance through the Thought Police. Most of the population is made up of the proles, who live in poverty. In Orwell’s society, the Inner Party parallels rich people or the ones that have all the money in our society; the Lower Party parallels middle class citizens; and the proles are like poor people to us. …show more content…

The rich people run the Party. The people who run our government come to power through campaigns. And what do campaigns need? Money. And where does money come from? Donors, who are rich people. And the people who donate money to these campaigns can manipulate the people running for office into passing laws that only benefit themselves, because people can be greedy and manipulate those without backbones. So I guess you could say that rich people run the government in both the novel and in our contemporary American
