The Year 1920 and Its Everlasting Impact On Our Country 1920 was the year of many struggles that the government and the people of our country were forced to surpass; however, in doing so, they forever illustrated the strength of our nation and the political, social, and economic advancements our country experienced over time. Only two years before 1920, the Great War, better known as World War I, ended and left “nearly 180,000 army personnel” “discharged because of disease or non battle injuries. Despite major advances in wound treatment and physical reconstruction, the Great War left more than 200,000 American veterans permanently disabled. Our country was forced to confront the evils of war and ensure that its strains would not overpower our country’s unity. The politics, economic, and social reforms in the year of 1920 evolved around these newly created pessimistic attitudes that heavily tested the future of our nation. Unfortunately, World War I was not the only factor causing the much distress in the year of 1920. Communism was initiated in what is now known as Russia “between 1919 and 1920 as a backlash against the recent success, in Europe and United States, of radicals and progressive who were calling for sweeping economic and political reforms” (Gordon 1). By 1920, many, including U.S. citizens, became desperate after the war, and the sight of success in the Soviet Union due to communism seemed appealing. “Membership in labor unions and radical political organizations peaked between 1918 and 1920. By 1920, the Socialist Party presidential candidate Eugene V. Debs received almost one million votes.
