Section 6 Zihan Zhong In the “The Sole Guardians of the Art Inheritance of Asia”: Japan and China at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, Carol Ann Christ described the first time Japan shows its colonial military power and China’s first attend at World Exposition. The Expo has always been an important place to showcase modern industrial civilization, leading science, new trade and cultural landscapes. As one of the winners of the wars, Japan wants to use this 1904 St. Louis fair to make a strong statement of its dominance in east Asia. By using this world fair as a stage Japan claimed its equal position as the America and Britain. Louis world’s fair. The preparation and caution they put into this are impossible to ignore. They proved to the Americans that they are independent and civilized. However, it also shows their fear of failure and weakness in front of western countries. Even they don’t admit but most parts of their culture and technique come from China. China as a strong neighbor of Japan for thousands of years did play a significant effect on its art, architecture, and society. After all, the truth is the truth, although Japan tried to show their uniqueness and power by their art and victories in the wars it still didn’t change the fact that they are not the owner of Chinese culture or any other culture. A truly strong country can prove its mightiness on their own but not by showing others’ weakness. Japan didn’t only try to show its civilization and how they defeated Asian and European power on the battlefield. In their view, this world fair shows that they on on the top of Asian and also a historic victory.
