The 1894 San Juan earthquake was a major seismic movement that took place in the province of San Juan, Argentina, on 27 October 1894, at about 07:30 PM. It was the most powerful earthquake recorded in Argentina, with magnitude 7.5 on the Surface wave magnitude. Its epicenter was located to the northwest of San Juan, approximately at 29°48′S 69°00′W, and at a depth of 30 km.
The maximum perceived intensity for the earthquake was IX on the Mercalli intensity scale. It caused severe damage and about 100 casualties in San Juan and the province of La Rioja, and also minor damages in Catamarca, Córdoba, San Luis and Mendoza, up to 500 km away from the
Mission San Juan Capistrano is in the center of the small town named for it. Shops and restaurants also named for it are found on the streets in front of the entrance to the mission. A high adobe wall surrounds the mission grounds. There are many restored buildings in the inner patio, and the great stone church. Across the fountain there is the bell wall that sits beside the ruined church. Near the bell is a statue of Father Junipero Serra. The ruins of the original stone church are in front of the mission. Only the sanctuary and parts of the church remain, but that’s enough to have an idea of how big it was. The church walls are made of large stones and birds have build nests between them. When one of the worst earthquakes ever hits the town of San Francisco panic ensues, but not for everyone. On April 18, 1906, at 5:15 am the city of San Francisco was demolished by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake which also led to many fires being started. There was $350m in estimated damages, and 400-750 people perished in the earthquake and fire. Around 490 city blocks were destroyed, causing 250,000 people to become homeless (A Brief Account, SF Tourism Tips). The earthquake, whose epicenter was located north of Evansville, was felt through most of Indiana and surrounding states, as reported by the Indianapolis Star. The quake was not the largest in Midwestern history, only registering a 5.0 on the Richter scale, nor did it do much damage. However, it was a wake-up call reminding those who haven’t paid attention to past warnings about the possibility of larger, more destructive earthquakes.
Made famous by Theodore Roosevelt’s volunteer Rough Rider’s and the Buffalo Soldiers, the Battle of San Juan Hill (July 1, 1898), also known as The Battle of San Juan Heights, was the bloodiest battle of the Spanish American War. After landing on the beachhead, the US V Corps under the command of Major General William Shafter fought their way west toward the port town of Santiago. After an indecisive clash at Las Guasimas on June 24, Shafter readied his men to take the strategic heights around the city, while Cuban insurgents blocked any Spanish reinforcements arriving on the roads to the north, in what would be one of the most decisive battles of America’s “Splendid Little War.” 1
Fort San Carlos De Barrancas is a National Historic Landmark. The word barrancas means "bluff" in Spanish. Sits on a bluff looking over the entrance to Pensacola Bay. The entrance is on Taylor Road half a mile east of the Museum of Naval Aviation. The English built the first fort in 1763. Coincidently captured by the Spanish during the American Revolution, who renamed it San Carlos de Barrancas which was built a second time in 1797 and built again in 1817. From 1839 through 1844, the United States built the current Fort Barrancas on the same site and has managed to include some of the forts original features. The Whittier earthquake was not the "big one" that Angelenos perpetually wait for. This may be hard to comprehend given the extensive damage caused by the earthquake. Although classified as "moderate," the quake left more than 100 injured and six dead, including an electrical repairman buried in an underground tunnel, a college student struck by falling concrete in a campus garage, and three people who died of heart attacks brought on by the shock.
The epicenter of this earthquake is in San Francisco, hence the name of it. The cities that were affected by it included Santa Rosa, San Jose, and Santa Cruz. In the hit Netflix original television series Black Mirror, specifically the episode “San Junipero,” individuals are allotted 5 hours a week to enter a virtual reality to live as a younger version of themselves. Individuals can then choose to ‘pass over’ or upload their consciousness into a cloud and become permanent residents of the town, San Junipero. The show centers around two women who become lovers connected by their want of nostalgia. Nostalgia defined by Svetlana Boym is a “longing for a home that no longer exists or has never existed… a sentiment of loss and displacement” (XIII). Judith Shklar begins her theoretical work with an historical account of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The townspeople who were impacted were also adamant that this natural disaster was a punishment from God. However, other well-known philosophers, with the exception of Voltaire, shared different perspectives on where to place the blame. Rousseau strongly believed that the individuals who had political power were responsible for the earthquake’s impact. His reasoning stems from his knowledge of the city’s construction of houses with multiple stories that were not built to last against extreme force. In this case, the number of deaths could have been prevented if city officials were aware of the importance of satisfying housing regulations. Kant encouraged those around him to learn about the science behind earthquakes as well as proposed that wars are disasters. This is an excellent scenario where Shklar introduces her argument

The epicenter of the earthquake in Alaska was about 10km east of the College Fiord, approximately 90km west of Valdez and 120km east of Anchorage, Alaska largest city. The earthquake was felt about 1,300,000 square kilometers away from the epicenter. (Christensen, Doug PhD.) About 30 kilometers deep, the first slip occurred under northern Prince William Sound, and an 800 kilometer rupture in the rocks extended horizontally, roughly parallel to the Aleutian trench. (Bolt) The cause of this massive earthquake was the vertical displacement of northwest motion of the Pacific plate. Also, it was estimated that about 200,000 square kilometers of the crust were deformed, making this the greatest area of vertical displacement ever measured. (Bolt)
Earthquakes belong to the class of most disastrous natural hazards. They result in unexpected and tremendous earth movements. These movements results from dissemination of an enormous amount of intense energy in form of seismic waves which are detected by use of seismograms. The impact of earthquakes leaves behind several landmarks including: destruction of property, extensive disruption of services like sewer and water lines, loss of life, and causes instability in both economic and social components of the affected nation (Webcache 2).
