The Impacts of World War I The First World War was truly ‘the Great War’. Its origins were complex, it’s scale was vast and it’s conduct was intense. Its impact on military operations was revolutionary, in the sense that new weapons were created, eg the tank, and the use of different gases. Its human and material costs were enormous. In short the first world war helped shape and change the world and it’s people. The war was a global conflict. Thirty-two nations were eventually involved. Twenty-eight of these constituted the Allied and Associated Powers, mainly being the British Empire, France, Italy, Russia, Serbia, and the United States of America. They were opposed by the Central Powers: Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire. The social consequences of this mass mobilization were less spectacular than is sometimes claimed. There were advances for the organized working class, especially its trade unions, especially in Britain, and arguably for women, but the working class of Europe paid a high price on the battlefield for social advances at home. In the defeated states there was very little social advance anyway. The First World War redrew the map of Europe and the Middle East. Big empires such as the Ottoman Empire were defeated and collapsed, and were replaced by a number of weak successor states. Russia underwent a bloody civil war involving the overthrow of two Governments (the monarchy and the provisional government) before the establishment of a Communist Soviet Union which put it beyond European diplomacy for quite some time. Germany became a republic who expected defeat, and they were increasingly weakened by the burden of (arguably unfair) Allied reparations. France recovered the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine and received reparations, but continued to fear (maybe too strong a word?) the German province/empire that had once dominated them. In terms of alliances and let downs, Italy was disappointed by the territorial rewards of its military sacrifice. This provided ground for Mussolini's Fascists to establish themselves within the Italian government, and they had overthrown parliamentary democracy by 1924.
World War I was a very deadly war with over 100 million human casualties(deaths plus injured). Therefore war is a very transformative event for humanity, because it always affects individuals, societies, and even the world in a pessimistic way.
This war which was also called “The Great War” was a war of alliances and the two parties involved with the war was the “Allies” and the “Central Powers.” The first three nations that were involved in the “Allies” (Russia, France, and Britain) were given the nickname the "Triple Entente". Nations also involved with the Allies were Serbia, Belgium, Japan, Montenegro, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa. New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa were involved ultimately because of their ties to Great Britain. Whenever the United States entered the war they wanted to stay neutral rather than join the “Allies”. Eventually, the Uni...
World War I, a military conflict, began as a local European war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia in 1914. It was transformed into a general European struggle by declaration of war against Russia, and eventually became a global war involving 32 nations. Twenty- eight of these nations, known as the Allies and the Associated Powers, and including Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and the United States, opposed the coalition known as the Central Powers, consisting of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, and Bulgaria. World War I, was not only a dispute among nations, but also affected thousands of people from all over the world, including African Americans, women, and even business and economic changes. African Americans endured a great amount of racism during the war, especially from the military.
There were many factors that led to the initial outbreak of World War I in Europe. A constant struggle to gain the upper hand in the “balance of power” existed, and it resulted in the formation of many alliances between European nations. For the most part, these agreements stipulated that the nations would aid one another if one of them were to be attacked by an enemy. Eventually two distinct sides formed: the Allies and the Central Powers. The former consisted of Britain, France, Italy, and Japan, while the latter was made up of Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and what was left of the Ottoman Empire.
Before the Great War, the continent of Europe was in a state of peace. Many countries did not have conflict building up between each other. Then unexpectedly, Great tensions arose, imperialism, alliances, and militarism. These all led up to the eruption of WWI.
...Italy and Japan, who's initial goal was world domination while the Allied powers, made up of the United States, Russia and England wanted to prevent it. This war is come to be known as the most deadly war in history because of the death of almost 11 million people in the consentration camps. The Allied powers won the war, putting an end to Hitler's dictatorship and the Holocaust.
The main countries which were involved in World War II were Germany, Japan, and Italy, which were known as the Axis Coalition, against the United States, the Soviet Union, and many other countries. Overall World War II was seen as the most devastating war in human history. Each country had different types of weaponry and artillery which proved to be vital in the result of the war (World War 1).
As we have seen, the Industrial Revolution, was the beginning of modern globalization. Because of it, roads, machinery, railroads made the world smaller. Entire countries, sold their goods in a scale never seen before. Credit, via the banks, made possible international transactions and at the same time, the world became more interdependent.
In 1914, Gavrilo Princip had assassinated Franz Ferdinand, The duke of Austria. The assassins had been put up by the Serbian government, soon the Austrian government found out and had decided to retaliate. This had been the tipping point that had caused World War 1. But this is not the only cause to World War 1. The other causes of World War 1 were MIlitarism which was strongest in Germany. Germany was allied with Austria-Hungary at the time which is also a cause, the alliances in 1914. A few main alliances were the Triple Entente, which makes Russia France and Britain watch and protect against the ever growing threat from Germany. There were alliances made all throughout Europe that bounded almost everyone to protect someone. Another cause was Nationalism, germany mostly. Germany because they were a fairly new country who wanted to prove themselves as a nation. The final cause was imperialism. which was happening all over the place and it made countries scared their land might be attacked. World War One was not only caused by an assassination but was caused by alliances made throughout Europe along with insane nationalism, extreme militarism and frantic imperialism.
Before we even look at World War 1, we need to fully understand the importance of the rise of militarism, imperialism and nationalism. You may as yourself, why is this important? This is important because these ideologies led the Great War. There are a lot of similarities
When the war broke out, it had become the Entente against the Alliance. The Entente consisted of the United Kingdom, France, Russia, Canada, Portugal, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Greece, Romania, Egypt, Arabia, and Belgium. The Alliance consisted of Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey, Libya, Sicily, Sardinia, and the Ottoman Empire. Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden remained Neutral Nations throughout the war. One change that occurred as the war went on is that in 1915, Italy re-aligned to the Entente from the Alliance.
The First World War that broke out in Europe on August, 1914 definitely created a lasting effect in the world. It was not just a war between two nations but a war of the world divided into two- the Central Powers and the Allies. Alliances, development of new weapons such as rapid fire machine guns, long range guns of explosive shells, tanks and aerial battles, and extreme nationalism added more flame in this fume. However, many thought that this will just be a short war, little did they know that an enormous shadow was casting all over Europe the moment it involved itself in the war.
There were two sides called the Central Powers and the Allied Powers. Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire were on the Central Powers (World War I). They fought against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan, and the United States (World War I). World War I had very intense fighting which included trench warfare where soldiers dug trenches miles and miles long and had to stay down in them for very long periods of time. By the time the war was over and the Allied Powers were victorious, over 16 million soldiers and civilians were killed (World War I). The United States tried to stay neutral in the early stages of the War, however, it became more difficult when Germany started sinking U.S. ships which included passenger boats. In 1915, Germany declared the water surrounding the British Isles to be a war zone (World War I). At a conference in 1919 called the Paris Peace Conference, leaders from the Allied Powers and leaders from the Central Powers met and signed the Treaty of Versailles on June 28 which ended World War I. World War I had a major effect on the world. Germany and France sent more than 80% of the male population between the ages of 15 to 49 into war (World War I). A total of 9 million soldiers were killed and more than 21 million more were wounded (World War I). World War I also allowed women to enter into the workforce to cover the jobs of
World War 1 was called “The Great War”, “The war to end all wars”, and “The first modern war”. It had many causes and a few repercussions and I will describe them in detail.
The effects of the war sped up the changes. It is an arguable fact, whether the war also had a liberating effect. If it did, it was greatly affected by the downfall of three empires, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Tsarist Russia and Keiser's Germany. In Russia the tsar abdicated and was replaced by the Provisional Government, but it only took 8 months and Russia moved from autocracy to communism.
