Fossil fuels are an important part of the world and our daily lives. Petroleum is a fossil fuel that like all fossil fuels it is in a limited supply but petroleum is one of the best ways to produce profitable energy. There are some alternate energy sources such as nuclear that could be a way that we get our energy from in the future.

Petroleum is a liquid fossil fuel that can be thin like gasoline or thick like tar. Petroleum is formed by hydrocarbons; with the addition of other substances mainly sulfur. Petroleum can either be green, black, or even clear. Petroleum is highly combustible (Petroleum.uk.com 2013, October 21).

When oil riggers find an oil well they usual do a test drill but that is expensive so they have better assessments. Most oil wells have more than one hole some are used for pumping the oil up and some pump water, other chemicals, and pressurized steam into the well. For offshore drilling the riggers first have to find out if under the sea bottom there is oil and to do this they use a method called Gravity Meter. Drilling for Petroleum relies on an oil rig which is a mobile self powered conglomeration of tools used for drilling (Williams, J 1996-2011).

During World War 2 the price for oil was $28.52 dollars per barrel but it has risen to $97.80 dollars per barrel today and the one year projection for the barrel of oil is $112 dollars per hour (Oil Price.net. 2013, October 23). Oil prices peek every 32.2 months (Williams, J 1996-2011)

The main use of oil is gasoline and 45% of all oil if used to make gasoline. Some other uses for oil are the production of such fuels as Diesel fuel and Jet fuel, they use oil to make most fuels because it is the cheapest and packs the most energy. Petroleum ...
