The idea that leaders need social skills is not new. Daniel Goleman first introduced us to the concept of emotional intelligence; the affect emotions have on our ability to think well. He later expanded the theory that both Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and Social Intelligence (SQ) relate to the way one deals with emotions. While EQ focuses on how we handle our emotion, SQ focuses on how we handle other’s emotions.
For any leader to communicate effective, it is helpful to be attuned to other thoughts and emotions. More often than not, it is expected that leaders have the capabilities to address any issues. This is reflected through President Wilson leadership style as he clearly showed evidence of not having the right skills to listen carefully and integrate the knowledge with his own.
Daniel Gildeman listed the following major elements of social intelligence that every leader should ideally possess:
1. Empathy
Understanding people and being sensitive to their needs
2. Attunement
Listening attentively and tuning into others moods appreciating business culture and understanding social networks
3. Values Awareness
Understanding people and being sensitive to their needs
4. Influence
Appealing to people’s self interest and gaining the support of key stakeholders
5. Developing Others
Coaching and mentoring, providing feedback to support development articulating
6. Inspiration
A compelling vision and bringing out the best in people
7. Teamwork
Soliciting input from all team members and encouraging cooper

...ent while making us feel calm, inspired and appreciated. Based on the checklist, one could argue he was not truly a bad leader. While his biggest fault was too arrogant and self-righteousness in his approach, he still had a set of followers who continued to execute his vision 25 years later.

Emotional intelligence is defined as the ability to identify, assess, and control the emotions of oneself or of groups. Researchers such as Peter Salvoey and John D. Mayer define it as “the subset of intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions” (Feeley& Driscoll CPA, 2014). In this paper, I will identify the role emotional intelligence plays in the critical thinking skills used by the forensic accountant during various stages of the investigative services of the engagement.
Intelligence should be the primary qualification for leadership. After examining the novel Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, and historical leaders, one may realize that all leaders possess intelligence, and it is often their biggest asset in leading others. First, an analysis of Animal Farm will show that intelligence was the pigs defining quality, and further analysis will show that the pigs intelligence acted as their biggest tool in leading the other animals. Second, one may examine many of history's most famous leaders, such as Winston Churchill or Adolf Hitler, and one may realize that they all utilize intelligence as well.
Link’s book was published in 1979 and was written based upon privet manuscript collections, government archives from the U.S, Brittan, France and Germany, as well as newspapers. Link also reaches from monographs, biographies, and articles from numerous colleagues. (Link.pg 129) Each of these sources are solid and reliable sources, and were well used to put together a book packed with information on Woodrow Wilson’s life. Link uses many firsthand accounts from Wilson himself, but seems almost suspicious of accounts that were not presented first hand. Though Link is extremely selective in what he chose to present, the book clearly presents these facts, but has a very bias opinion of Wilson as discussed earlier. Link’s evidence, though selective, fits nicely in the monograph and makes the aspects of Wilson that he does cover clear and easy to read

Wilson was the man that during the early 1900’s, took initiative and tried to change the world with the vision of peace, harmony, and prosperity as a goal for a near future. Towards the end of his days, he had achieved some sense of peace in the world, however his idealistic plan for universal peace was not accomplished. Although we still have not reached this plan for peace today, we remain hopeful that someday this will. Nevertheless, we would never have the country we do today without Woodrow Wilson being the historical figure and hero that he was, as he worked hard with his ideas to make the time that he lived in.
When I think of effective leaders, I think of leaders with strategies, visions, or powerful ideas. However, this course has taught me different. While strategies and ideas are necessary for being a leader, it takes emotional intelligence for a leader to be successful. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.

Personality as well as intelligence tells people a lot about an individual. Certain characteristics of one’s personality such as impression and reputation in a social environment may or may not be a good way to gain acknowledgement. In becoming a leader, work ethics must be strong, precise, and others must be able to feel one’s presence. The three abilities that successful leaders have are; the ability to get along with others and build teams, the ability to make sound and timely decisions and the ability to get things done. The mass amounts of leaders only possess one or two of these abilities and a smaller percentage having all three. According to the Five Factor Model (FFM), it is important for leaders to possess dependability, adjustments and surgency. (Hughes, Ginnett and Curphy, page 235)

Emotional intelligence is the area of the cognitive capabilities which covers the personality and the social skills and it helps in the handling of the interpersonal behavior. Whereas intelligence as explained as the capability of the person in terms of achievement of the goal by the adaptive behavior. The emotional intelligence concentrates on the features of the intelligence that helps in the self knowledge and the social adaption management.

Great leadership is not achieved over night, and it is not something that one achieves and stops. Great leaders spend entire lives building and growing their leadership skills. It is not likely that a leader will one day wake up with all of the vision, influence, knowledge, respect, and momentum necessary to be great; these take time to develop. “It is the capacity to develop and improve their skills that distinguishes leaders from their followers.”
