Being in a state of emotional discomfort is almost like being insane. For the person in this discomfort they feel deranged and confused and for onlookers they look as if they have escaped a mental hospital. On The first page of chapter fifteen in the novel Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, the main character is in a state of total discomfort and feels as if he is going mad. From the reader’s perspective it seems as if he is totally out of control of his body. This portrayal of the narrator is to express how torn he is between his two selves. He does not know how to tell Mary, the woman who saved him and has been like a mother to him, that he is leaving her for a new job, nor does he know if he wants to. His conflicting thoughts cause him to feel and seem a little mad. The author purposefully uses the narrator’s divergent feelings to make portray him as someone uncomfortable in is own skin. This tone is portrayed using intense diction, syntax, and extended metaphors. The powerful diction used within the passage express the true internal struggle that the narrator is facing. The reader is able to pick up on the physical and emotional pain that the narrator is going through as a result of this struggle because of the author’s use of vivid adjectives. Words such as “nerve-jangling,” “violently,” “digging,” and “ringing” convey the intensity of the narrators emotional state. In context these adjectives may convince the reader that the this passage is about the narrator going insane. He is having major reactions to minor details such as ringing sounds and itchy skin. He is hearing nerve-jangling sounds, violently scratching himself, and digging his nails into his skin, causing himself to bleed. Many of the descriptions in the passage a... ... middle of paper ... ...er is gilded; although it seems that it is the best offer he could have wished for, something is missing and if he chips away at their shiny exterior he may be able to find out what their true goal is. Emotional discomfort can sometimes be perceived as mental instability. A person may look, act, or feel insane, when in truth they are just very uncomfortable in their own skin. The narrator has a genuinely difficult decision to make which far outside his comfort zone. He is choosing between a woman who has been like a mother to him and much needed job that he feels he may enjoy. This choice is tearing him apart from the inside out. From the ringing noises that interrupt his every thought to the skin he is scraping off. The author uses diction, syntax, and extended metaphors to express the complete and utter discomfort of the narrator, both physically and emotionally.
The narrator's life is filled with constant eruptions of mental traumas. The biggest psychological burden he has is his identity, or rather his misidentity. He feels "wearing on the nerves" (Ellison 3) for people to see him as what they like to believe he is and not see him as what he really is. Throughout his life, he takes on several different identities and none, he thinks, adequately represents his true self, until his final one, as an invisible man.
Living as a colored man in a society socially dominated by white folk forces the colored individual to live with a versatile conception of self. This notion parallels W.E.B Dubois’ conception of double-consciousness, which refers to the psychological struggle of forming a sense of self that incorporates both a black identity and an American identity. Dubois suggests the solution to the struggle between the societal stereotypes and black culture is to unify the two, into a cohesive whole. Invisible Man is a novel by Ralph Ellison, addressing many social and moral issues regarding African-American identity, including the inside of the interaction between the white and the black. His novel was written in a time, that black people were treated like degraded livings by the white in the Southern America and his main character is chosen from that region. In this figurative novel he meets many people during his trip to the North, where the black is allowed more freedom. As a character, he is not complex, he is even naïve. Yet, Ellison’s narration is successful enough to show that he improves as he makes radical decisions about his life at the end of the book.
This essay will be addressing the book Invisible man written by Ralph Ellison. In Invisible Man the protagonist would describe how it is to feel invisible to the world just based on your skin color. This unnamed protagonist would describe his past on how once he was an excellent student to leaving in the basement of an apartment complex restricted to only whites. As the story progresses the protagonist explains many challenges he had to go through to end up living in a hole.
Ralph Ellison published the book ’Invisible Man’ at Random House in 1952 (Wright, Richard, Michel & and Claude 3). One time he fell sick and he decided to take some time away from work in order to recover. During this time, Ralph developed an inspiration to write a collection which later became the “Invisible Man’. In the book, the narrator starts off by saying that he is invisible, a form that is not physical, but it is a refusal of others to recognize his presence. Further, the narrator says that owing to his invisibility, he has had to keep off from the world to live underground, eventually vandalizing power from the Monopolated Light & Power Company (Wright et.al 117). However, the narrator realizes his importance despite his individuality complex, thus he decides to uphold his distinctiveness without sacrificing his dependability to the society. Finally, the narrator feels ready to leave his hiding place and face the world.
The Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison is about an unnamed man who’s journey ultimately leads him to live in a sewer hole and become “The Invisible Man.” The Narrator is characterized as a model student, and he is giving a speech about success for Black people, the speech was so powerful that he was invited to give the speech in front of the white leaders of the town. However, when he goes to give the speech, he is welcomed by the drunken leaders, and is forced to engage in a fight between 9 other classmates, however, in the end he is able to give a speech and receives a scholarship to the state school of negroes. After the narrator is ordered to drive one of the school founders, Mr. Norton, to the school for a meeting, things do not go right and Mr. Norton arrives intoxicated. Throughout Ralph Ellison’s novel, Invisible Man, the main character dealt with collisions and contradictions, which at first glance presented as negative influences, but in retrospect, they positively influenced his life, ultimately resulting in the narrator developing a sense of independence. The narrator, invisible man, began the novel as gullible, dependent, and self-centered. During the course of the book, he developed into a self-determining and assured character. The characters and circumstances invisible man came across allowed for this growth.

“I looked at Ras on his horse and at their handful of guns …” With only thirteen words, a minefield of images from the narrator’s voice tells of an underlying story. “I.” This pronoun speaks volumes of who’s words and who’s voice will lead us through the, apparently, important story that is to follow. The scene that is painted for the readers in the very beginning is that of post-medieval violence. “Guns” do not invoke carefree, cheerful images, but those of terror and death; adrenaline. The “I” of this tale wants to share a terrifyingly significant story. To see the full meaning, we must delve much deeper and discover who Ras is, why our narrator is looking up at them, and what events have taken place thus far for this moment to occur. In the “Invisible Man Prologue” by Ralph Ellison we get to read about a man that is under the impressions he is invisible to the world because no one seems to notice him or who he is, a person just like the rest but do to his skin color he becomes unnoticeable. He claims to have accepted the fact of being invisible, yet he does everything in his power to be seen. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Invisible as incapable by nature of being seen and that’s how our unnamed narrator expresses to feel. In the narrators voice he says: “I am a man of substance, of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids- and I might even be said to possess a mind. I am invisible, understand simply because people refuse to see me.”(Paragraph #1) In these few words we can
Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man tells of one man's realizations of the world. This man, the invisible man, comes to realize through experience what the world is really like. He realizes that there is illusion and there is reality, and reality is seen through light. The Invisible Man says, "Nothing, storm or flood, must get in the way of our need for light and ever more and brighter light. The truth is the light and light is the truth" (7). Ellison uses light as a symbol for this truth, or reality of the world, along with contrasts between dark/light and black/white to help show the invisible man's evolving understanding of the concept that the people of the world need to be shown their true ways. The invisible man becomes aware of the world's truth through time and only then is he able to fully understand the world in which he lives.
Invisibility for some is a boon but for others it is about losing their identity in the society. The concept of invisibility discussed in the book “The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison”, discusses two forms of invisibility. One is where whites view the blacks as different creatures and are invisible to their eyes in the form of humans who are equal in abilities to them. Another form of invisibility is where the narrator decides to adopt invisibility to recede power from the white community. Both forms of invisibility is still relevant in modern society Invisibility through, dominance/power, hatred/racism, and being afraid to express oneself are the forms of invisibility one can expect from this contemporary era.
In Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, the narrator goes through many hardships that make him who he is. He experiences being discouraged and unlucky many different times throughout the novel. However, there are three major times that the narrator goes through these hardships. He is mistreated for his race, especially in the beginning of the novel. He is discouraged by the president of his college when he is expelled. He is also taken down when he finds out that the Brotherhood is not who he thought they were. In Ellison’s Invisible Man, the narrator is degraded and humiliated three major times throughout the novel.
It began with the cries for help, and the struggle for one last breath. They all stare as the man is captured and wrestled to the ground and beaten senselessly all because of the color of his skin. As the yells become louder and the torches are lit the man’s heart begins beating more vigorously. The thought of “will I live? Or shall I die?” comes into question. As they carry the man up on a platform and slide a looped rope around his neck the answer becomes quite clear. The rope then tightens and the man is pushed off of the platform. He is struggling; he begins to picture death as bliss. The last breath he takes he can only say two words “I’m sorry”. We often overlook those that are invisible to society; Ralph Ellison takes us on a real world journey where the average African American man is an unrecognized member of society.
