Women’s rights in Europe throughout the nineteenth-century were an intense subject that took views in political, social, and private forms. One of the pioneering women of this time, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, spent most of her life employing some of the most important duties that women had so longed for throughout this time. She furthered her education, had a profound career in medicine, and raised a family—all while being an active supporter of the women’s suffrage movement. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson helped shape the image that women could hold prominent careers, be active members among society, and keep a household running.
Elizabeth Garrett was born in 1836 to Mr. Newson Garret and Mrs. Louisa Dunnell from Leiston, Suffolk. At the time of Garrett’s birth women were fighting for the freedom and rights of their sex. The view of young girls at this time was a heavy debate that left them with much scrutiny and exile to the outside world. Women were seen as prisoners of the home, where they were to obey that of their fathers and eventually their husbands. The education of women was a heavy debate, where many thought that women were to learn only the academics that would help them to become worthy mothers and wives. While young boys were likely to attend public schools and in some cases continue on to universities, girls were left to stay at home to learn to be a good house maid. Aside from women’s lack of and allowance of education, women were also fighting for legal rights as well as fair pay.

Although this was a setback in her career, she left with a certificate in Chemistry and materia medica. After leaving the hospital, Elizabeth Garret applied to several medical schools. Without surprise, she was denied admittance to all of them. This however did not hold her back from her studies. She was able to receive another certificate in anatomy and physiology. In 1862, she was finally able to undergo private study through the Society of Apothecaries where she spent three years furthering her education.
As the first women to obtain and medical license in Britain, Elizabeth Garret became a pioneer in the field of medicine. In 1866, her name appeared in the Medical Register—a large milestone after her long and devastating pursuit to become a recognized doctor.
She then returned to Canada in 1875 to and write and pass licensing exams, making her the first Canadian woman doctor licenced to practice. She also later went on to inspire the women in Canada interested in medicine and opened the Women’s Medical College in Kingston, Ontario (Forster 264). Jennie’s story is one of extreme determination and strength. She never let anyone else dictate what she was going to do, and with this mindset achieved her dream. Contrary to having doctors deliver babies today, midwives were called upon to deliver babies during the eighteenth century. There were many more midwives than there were doctors during that time. In addition, Martha served as a midwife, nurse, physician, mortician, pharmacist, and attentive wife simultaneously (40). Aside from being able to deliver babies, midwives were also highly experienced in medical care—they tended to wounds, diagnosed illnesses, and made medicine. Midwives were more accessible and abundant when compared to doctors—they did not require any formal training or education. When the medical field was underdeveloped, the midwives were the leading resource when it was related to medical conflicts.

But whatever arguments the couple engaged remained between them (89). Not only did the women 's rights cause problems in her marriage it also created problems in many other relationships. Elizabeth Cady Stanton continuously pushed boundaries like with her fashion, “That spring Stanton, Lucy Stone, and Amelia Bloomer had traded in their cumbersome attire for the “‘Bloomer costume”’ and thus made the dress reform” (80). Her family was apposed to her wearing fants they were so upset by it that some did not even want to talk to her or be around her while she wore bloomers. She didn’t mind causing an uproar or being judged and ridiculed constantly. She did what ever it took to make a stand and do what was needed to succeed. During this time period of the mid 1800s and beyond that, Elizabeth would be considered a “maverick”. Though there were many women, and a select few men who actively participated in the movement of women 's rights, most people did not stand up for what they believed in, or did not have the literary needed to express themselves, and some were even opposed to what Elizabeth and other reformers were doing. The origins of Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s undying fervor for women’s rights derived from her early childhood. Stanton was born into a wealthy family, as her mother’s father had been colonel of the Continental Army and her father held an office in the New York State Assembly, and served as a judge on the New York Supreme Court. Despite her wealthy upbringing, her childhood was surrounded by the cult of domesticity and the belief on how women were of less value than men. Following her older brother’s death, she desired to fill in his void by taking up “masculine” hobbies: learning Greek, horseback riding, chess, and attending Johnstown Academy. In the mid nineteenth century America was going through an age of reform. The person who would be the center of these reforms would be the women in society. Women soon realized that in order to make sure that all the reforms went through they would need more power and influence in society. The oppression and discrimination the women felt in this era launched the women into create the women’s right movement. The women fought so zealously for their rights it would be impossible for them not to achieve their goals. The sacrifices, suffering, and criticism that the women activist made would be so that the future generations would benefit the future generations.

When most people think of the Scientific Revolution, they think of scientists such as Galileo, Newton, Brahe, and Boyle. However, many people do not even know about the many women who played a vital role in the scientific advancements of this period. Even when these women were alive, most of society either ignored them or publicly disapproved their unladylike behavior. Because of this, these women were often forgotten from history, and very little is known about the majority of them. Although their names rarely appear in history books, the female scientists of the Scientific Revolution still impacted the world of science in several ways. In fact, all of the scientists listed above had a woman playing an influential role assisting them in their research. However, assisting men in their studies was not the only role open to women; several women performed experimentation and research on their own, or advancing science in some other way, even though the society of the time looked down upon and even resisted their studies.
As a cultural movement, Romanticism “revolted against academic convention, and authority,” and the “limitations to freedom” that Romantics saw in the Enlightenment period (210). “Among European intellectuals, the belief in the reforming powers of reason became the basis for a progressive view of human history” (144). Enlightenment figures Antione Nicolas de Condorcet and Mary Wollstonecraft advocated for one such progressive cause, the rights of women. Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Woman put the idea of women’s rights into the minds of people during the Enlightenment period. As a merely progressive view, women did not obtain rights such as voting until the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Enlightenment writers like Jonathan Swift and Voltaire, used satire to “[draw] attention to the vast contradictions between morals and manners, intentions and actions, and, more generally Enlightenment aspirations and contemporary degradation” (158).
At the young age of 38 she contracted the Crimean Fever and was bedridden for the remainder of her life. Nonetheless, she was still determined to improving health care and alleviating patients’ suffering.
