Exploration, into the workings of a classroom, always provides a unique experience. Each teacher does her class a little different. There are so many different standards that must be reached and so many different opinions on the best way to meet the requirements. Experiencing the differences in each class helps me to develop my opinion and ideas on what I want to see in my classroom and how I want to handle my students. I work at United Methodist Church’s child development center/ preschool. I did my observations there. I work full a full day on Thursday and have had the chance to see how different teachers handle different situation and how they implement there curriculum. I loved to walk into the room and see projects and know they were not done by the teachers. Perfection is not the objective in classrooms like this the students were. On the other hand I did see a classroom that was decorated to perfection. The room was cute, but in my opinion it did not hold the identity of the students. Doing is a huge part of learning. The children responded to the teachers giving them creative freedom. They also seemed more willing to participate and voice their opinions. Basically the thing to remember is flexibility. A schedule is important, but things come up and you have to be able to go with the flow. Even the most perfectly planned day can have its problems and as a teacher you just have to make it work. During lunch time on a day when I was there a student threw-up. There is a scheduled recess time where the kids go outside after lunch before nap, but since the teacher was having to wait for the parent and keep the sick child separated from the other children so she created a fun space so the children could get plenty of activity. This is a trivial example, but it is a simple way of showing that in a class nothing is set in stone. The event that I attended for the interpreter observation requirement was an event that occurred in the classroom and took place in order to provide interpretation for a guest speaker, Richard McGann, who was Deaf and blind. The event was held at the University of Pittsburgh during the Intro to Interpreting American Sign Language-English class taught by Jessica Adams on Tuesday, November 10th at 5:30PM and the interpreted lecture took place in a typical classroom located on the third floor of the Cathedral of Learning. In conclusion I feel that I have gained knowledge that can only be obtained through hands on experience in the classroom. With this experience I changed my assumption about classroom management techniques and have a totally new outlook which will only aid me as a teacher. This will be of great help to me going forward but I feel as a teacher you must be constantly open to learning and improving
“Educational practice is necessarily based on the assumption that students are willing to engage in educational activities that they will lend their cooperation and support to the process in their education. Students who do not offer such cooperation, who are unmotivated, present significant challenges” (Williams and Ivey, 2001, 75). High school school-children show the most trouble with cooperation and motivation; they only have a few more years of schooling and for some pupils that is the end of their education. That was one of the main reasons why I wanted to observe a high school classroom; the other main reason is because I have actually considered teaching high school grades. I observed Ms. Edith Stone and her Algebra II mathematics classroom.
The classroom observation took place in Chaira’s class at Early Education Center (EEC) in Highland, NY. Chaira class is a self contain (Full day center-based special) class that consist of 12 children, 2 assistant teachers and 2 one to one aides. The age range for this class is from 3 ½-5 years old. EEC starts at 8:45am and ends at 2:30pm. The staff is very friendly and caring to the children. I arrived EEC at 8:30am and talk briefly with the teacher. She discussed the agenda for the class. She invited me to interact with the children in the class. This allowed me to observe and get hands on experience working with preschool children.
Everything about the room was bright, colorful, and child-size. It was an ideal learning environment in my opinion. I have noticed that the higher the education, the more dull the interior of the classroom becomes. I think this is because at a very young age children are encouraged to learn and teachers want them to have a desire to explore and learn and this is often accomplished through entertainment. As a college student, it is clear that learning is a choice and professors are not there to entertain, but to teach. I think this shift in education style is good for creating independence, focus, and motivation in students, but I personally feel stifled by plain, uniform classrooms. There are many reasons people decide to enter the teaching field. Some enter because they enjoy working with people or children, others because they like being off during the summer months, and still others because of their love for a particular subject. Although all these reasons are valid, I feel my reasons are much simpler. The bottom line is that I love kids and enjoy working with them. My desire to make learning a more positive experience for them has only increased with time.

The class I visited is comprised of 24 five and six year old children, a lead teacher and a ‘Para-Pro” who assists the teacher and provides support and guidance for the children. Within the classroom itself, there are 6 tables organized in the center of the room in a grid formation. Children have their own workspace at a shared table. Around the perimeter of the room are ‘centers’ where each day, the children work on tasks such as listening, story development, gross and fine motor skills, math, reading and other important skills that are needed to develop socially and academically. In several places on the walls, there are displays or ‘brag boards’ where children can post their work that they feel best represents their efforts. The walls are brightly decorated and are filled with pictures, letters, numbers and other basic elementary school information. It is energizing and interesting without being chaotic or overstimulating.
Spending time in a classroom can have a way of opening your eyes to parts of the education system that some never considered questioning. I found myself lucky enough to be able to experience time at Cannella Elementary school and Claywell Elementary school which are both located in Tampa. During my time observing I was able to see and discuss the roles of a teacher and how at times they can be limited. I was also able to witness that retention, an age old practice, is still exercised used in schools today. The time I spent in these classrooms have opened my eyes to some new things. I hope to take these experiences and use them to better myself as a teacher.
The school that I visited was new. It was the first year of the school opening. The school board had combined two schools into one, so the students had to adjust to their new environments and new individuals. They seemed to be getting along well with each other. Since the school is new the teacher has to adjust to new problems that araise. Times for the subjects and times for using the computer labs change. So the teacher must always be fixable for anything. In this observation of this classroom I learned about the enjoyment of teaching. How you have to adapt to each of the students.
As teachers, you need to be very organized and creative. Time is very valuable. When students are able to use creativity it enhances them and helps them in their learning process. Our children are natural and curious explorers.
For my observation experience I went to Southern High School in Harwood, MD. Southern High School has a special education department for the students with disabilities. The teacher that I met with for this classroom observation was Ms. West. In the classroom there were at least four assistant teachers that helped Ms. West throughout the school day. The assistant teachers helped Ms. West co- teach the class and were there to help the students if they needed extra help. The school also has a couple of student aides that come in to help the teachers and the students in the classroom. There were at least twelve students in the classroom. The students in the class had many different exceptionalities such as learning disabilities, Down syndrome,
The students that I observed in the classroom were of middle to high school. I went to see 8th, freshman, 10th , and seniors classes, they seemed excited and very curious to why I was there. The middle school was more alive and rambunctious while I observed them. The High school kids were more relaxed, more comical. Some were paying attention while others seemed tuned out to the lecture or involved in socialization with friends within the class. By the end of the class Mr. Hasgil had restored the attention of everyone by using tactics such as history jeopardy with candy as the prize with the high school kids. In both he middle school and high school the kids were mostly Caucasian with a mixture of black, Asian , and Hispanic in the classes.
My time observing was not only educational for me on how to become the teacher I desire to be, but as well as how to better myself as a student and improve my own learning. I observed some wonderful learning tools that I have since implemented into my own education to develop my own learning.
