Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to the conference here in the civic centre to discuss the issue of Elder Abuse in Ireland. In discussing this issue I am hoping to illustrate how elder abuse effects many vulnerable individual’s within today’s society thus creating an awareness of an every growing problem. First and foremost I would like to extend my sincere thank you to each and everyone for participating today in this conference. Throughout my speech I will be discussing the signs and symptoms of elder abuse. I will be outlining the most recent statistics with regards to complaints made by individuals and or their families regarding the issue. I will discuss the legal and quasi-legal documents relating to elder abuse. In doing so I will be explaining the relevant policies and procedures in place to protect in my opinion one of the most vulnerable cohorts of people. These policies will be based on the past present and future aspects. Hopefully I will be identifying what are the future plans that should be in place to protect such a vulnerable group of individuals. Finally I will outline the relevant resources available for individual’s suffering from elder abuse.

Elder abuse has become an increasingly recognised concern and social issue in today’s society. Elder abuse is defined as “A single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person or violates their human and civil rights” (protecting our future, 23/1/2012). Any abuse which may occur on an individual of 65 years or older may be classified as elder abuse. Elder abuse may occur in many different forms which includes: psychological abuse, neglect,...

... This is still the care today as there remains no legislation governing the topic of Elder abuse specifically. However as above mentioned there is various laws that can be used to address the issue of abuse among the elderly. These laws aid in the prosecuting of the individuals responsible for committing abuse, mistreating or neglect towards and elderly person. Some of the legislation which is in place and are regularly used in addressing this issue if human rights, health and social care regulations, equality and age discrimination to name just a few.
