The Egan Model of counseling can be integrated into one of the principles of psychiatric nursing called motivational interviewing. Egan Model is used to help the counselor use structured and specific skills to assist the client to move forward. Motivational Interviewing “is a client centered, directive therapeutic style to enhance readiness by helping clients explore and resolve ambivalence” (Hettema, 2005, page 91). These models can easily be integrated into each other; there are many ideas and steps that overlap and complement each other. The first part of this essay will be based on discussing the Egan Model and the Motivational Interviewing Models separately; describing what they are and how they work. Then a discussion on how they compare and how the models can be integrated into each other. The Egan Model The Egan model of counseling is used when the client is assisted by the helper to see possible solutions by a three step process. All three steps are gone through in the order in which they are laid out but the order can be varied with specific situations. An individual can move forward and backwards throughout the steps as the story changes. The first step of the process is to find out what is going on with the client. It is where the counselor helps by establishing a trusting relationship with the client in order to hear the story. The quicker that a confidential relationship is built up the easier it is for the client to establish trust in the counselor and the easier the story is to tell. It makes the start of the process easier for the client and the counselor. Coronary heart disease is a common term for the build-up of plaque in the heart’s arteries that could lead to heart attack (Coronary Heart Disease, 2017). Furthermore, there are many known coronary heart disease factors that can be controlled. These are high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and pre-diabetes, obesity, smoking, lack of physical activity, unhealthy diet and stress (Coronary Heart Disease Factors, n.d). The techniques of motivational interviewing are more persuasive than coercive and more supportive than argumentative. The motivational interviewer must advance with a firm sense of purpose, clear methods and skills for seeking that purpose, and a sense of timing to mediate in specific ways at quick brief periods of time (Miller and Rollnick, 1991). The clinician uses motivational interviewing on account of four general principles in mind. Case conceptualization explains the nature of a client’s problem and how they develop such problem ( Hersen, & Porzelius, p.3, 2002) In counseling, assessment is viewed as a systematic gathering of information to address a client’s presenting concerns effectively. The assessment practice provides diagnostic formulation and counseling plans, and aids to identify assets that could help the client cope better with concern that they are current. Assessment is present as a guide for treatment and support in the “evaluation process. Although many methods can be employed to promote a thorough assessment, no one method should be used by itself” (Erford, 2010, p.269-270). Eventually, it is the counselor's job to gain adequate information concerning the client and the client's presenting concerns to establish an effective treatment strategy. Using a combination of assessment techniques increases the likelihood of positive interventions and promotes successful treatment (Erford, 2010, p.271). A case conceptualization reflects how the professional counselor understands the nature of the presenting problems and includes a diagnostic formulation. Case conceptualization organizes assessment data into meaningful outline, applying research, and theory to make sense of client’s current problem.

People with addiction may seek counseling to help them recover from drug usage. Using motivational interviewing can help find out how motivated the client is to staying clean and what will encourage them to stay away from drugs. The clients also needs to see how the addiction is effecting their lives and the lives of their loved ones.
Clients with substance abuse issues are growing at a high rate. These clients can come in to an environment where they are told to go seek treatment for their substance abuse, or they are not even told to seek treatment but they do anyway. The clients that are less motivated are often thought of as people that do not care and so they are pushed aside from those that are willing to come to treatment. This paper is going to focus on engaging clients who have a substance abuse diagnoses using Motivational Interviewing as a way to engage them in the beginning stages of treatment. These clients could be coming into either an outpatient or inpatient setting; however, the articles I chose focus on an outpatient setting.

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), role and job description is providing primary mental health care services, to those with mental health problems, or psychiatric disorders. The PMHNP is required to assess, diagnose, provide treatment plans, prescribe medication therapy, and offer counsel across the lifespan. The PMHNP provides care in a wide range of settings to children, adolescents, adults, the elderly, and their families. This mental healthcare takes place in the primary care settings, emergency rooms, hospitals, outpatient mental health clinics, senior living communities and in private practices. Being culturally competent to care for the ever changing demographics of the United States is necessary. The PMHNP assess and treats in a holistic manor and utilizes evidenced based practice. Regardless of race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, political persuasion, or socio economic standing the PMHNP is there to treat. The PMHNP role also includes establishing a therapeutic relationship, being sensitive to many abnormal behaviors, and caring for those frequently distressed emotionally. Collaboration and the ability to make referrals are essential for the PMHNP. Counseling Theories August 3, 1995 Running head: Coun. v. Psychotherapy Counseling v. psychotherapy is there a difference between the two? This paper will attempt to prove that there are several differences between counseling and psychotherapy. While counseling and psychotherapy have several different elements in each, the following information will also attempt to show the reader that there are some areas where the two overlap. At times this was a confusing topic to research. A fine line distinguishes the two topics and one must look hard to see this line. Definition of Counseling One survey taken by Gustad suggests a definition of counseling where he included three key elements. Counseling is a learning-oriented process, carried on in a simple, one to one social environment, in which a counselor, professionally competent in relevant psychological skills and knowledge, seeks to assist the client by methods appropriate to the latter's needs and within the context of the total personnel program, to learn more about himself, to learn how to put such understanding into effect in relation to more clearly perceived, realistically defined goals to the ` end that the client may become a happier and more productive member of his society (1957, p. 36). In lay terms counseling can be described as a face to face relationship, having goals to help a client to learn or acquire new skills which will enable them to cope and adjust to life situations. The focus is to help a person reach maximum fulfillment or potential, and to become fully functioning as a person. Definition of Psychotherapy Psychotherapy is the process inwhich a therapists assists the client in re-organizing his or her personality. The therapist also helps the client integrate insights into everyday behavior. Psychotherapy can be defined as "more inclusive re-education of the individual" (Brammer& Shostrom,1977). Objectives of counseling The objectives of counseling according to the Committee on Definition, Division of Counseling Psychology, American Psychological Association are to "help individuals toward overcoming obstacles to their personal growth, wherever these may be encountered, and toward achieving optimum development of their personal resources" (Arbuckle, 1967). In a paper written by Dr. T. Millard, it is stated that "Counseling provides clarity and a positive and constructive venue for the individual to sensibly examine the instinctive-emotional and rational (or irrational) motives which determine the drive, content, and even the form of human conduct." This shows the part which counseling plays in a clients treatment.
