This year Avila had the pleasure of being a part in fighting poverty. Interestingly enough it wasn’t a traditional way of donations. Companies such as FINCA and KIVA have found a new way of giving to those in need. They decided to give out loans to people across the world, who suffer financially. As a part of our first year project this year’s freshmen were able to be a part in giving out these loans to both individuals and families in need. This money came from us selling t-shirts and various donations As a part of this project we were required to get into groups of 2 and decide upon a recipient of our loans. Each loan was a total of $50 and we were able to personally choose who we wanted to sponsor which in my opinion was very cool. The recipient me and my partner picked was a young women named Liya Banda from Zambia. Liya’s story was very touching and was more impactful because she was very young and had already been through so much. Unfortunately Liya had to drop out of school in the 7th grade because her family couldn’t afford it. At age 13 Liya’s father died which forced her family to move into the homes of various relatives, causing them to separate. Liya was sent to her uncle’s house, where she was mistreated by her aunt. This made life very tough for Liya, it seemed as though her childhood was ripped out of her hands, forcing her to grow up fast. In order to support herself Liya began selling vegetables in her village market in order to help provide for her family. Soon enough Liya got married and had four children. Her husband’s business wasn’t doing well and he wasn’t able to provide for his family, so he eventually abandoned Liya and the children, leaving her to be the primary supporter and parent of her growing family... ... middle of paper ... ...ce was also a great way of showing what our school is about. Being a servant and being a part of the change is the direct definition of Avila’s values. Avila has always been a part of making a difference, as whole Avila expects each student and staff member to focus on change. Avila has always jumped at the idea of lending a hand to the community or anyone in need for that matter. Giving is what this school was built on. I learned that micro financing is an interesting and easy way of making a difference. Now that I know how to do it, I can make this an annual thing. This experience and all the experiences to come are very crucial each student. I know that I am always going to look back on this experience and know that I can always be a part of change. Now we all know that we can be a part of the change, and when we come together we can make an even bigger impact.
She knows she will never truly experience poverty because this is nothing more than a project but she leaves behind her old life and becomes known as a divorced homemaker reentering the workforce after many years. Her main goal is to get enough income to be able to pay for all her expenses and have enough money to pay next months rent.
While the pervasiveness of depression in modern American Culture is apparent, the relationships between the factors that cause it are often debated. Depression, according to David Myers, is the most common disorder that causes patients to seek treatment and 17 percent of adults in the United States face depression at some point during their lifetime (Myers 621, 2013). According to the DSM-IV-Tr, as cited by Myers, a depressive episode occurs when someone shows five characteristics of depression for a period of two or more weeks. Characteristics of depression are a depressed mood for a majority of the day, diminished interest, weight loss or gain, insomnia or oversleeping, persistent lethargy, feeling of worthlessness, inappropriate guilt, difficulty

Most people feel that they should help the needy in some way or another. The problem is how to help them. This problem generally arises when there is a person sitting on the side of the road in battered clothes with a cardboard sign asking for some form of help, almost always in the form of money. Yet something makes the giver uneasy. What will they do with this money? Do they need this money? Will it really help them? The truth of the matter is, it won't. However, there are things that can be done to help the needy. Giving money to a reliable foundation will help the helpless, something that transferring money from a pocket to a man's tin can will never do.
For my volunteer experience I chose to help assist in a program called the Sonshine Club that’s provided in one of the local city schools Kenwood Heights Elementary School. The Sonshine club has been a program that has been established for approximately seventeen years now in which at this particular school they met on Tuesdays from 3:15-4:15pm. Their message to bring to the children is that “there is a bright light out of all of this” (Use.salvationarmy.org, 2014). In Clark county, Ohio the data shows that there are 27% of children between the ages of 5-17 years old, are in poverty (Use....
The study summarizes the recent findings in relationship between depression and death. Many earlier studies seem to have pointed out the connection between depression and cigarette smoking. The study mainly discusses depression and ischemic heart disease. Initially, it discuss about a study conducted between communities with its clinical populations. Next, it discusses about the confounding effect of cardiac risk factors. It further discusses examining cardiac patients rather than healthy individuals to find out the relationship between depression and Coronary Artery disease. The study also discusses several other issues before concluding the controversies with depression and mortality. This information is going to be useful in my research paper because I intend on explaining the relationship between depression and its physical effects on the body.
Depression is a mental disorder in which a patient might feel intense, prolonged, negative emotions (Beyond Blue, 2014). This can have severe impact on a person's mental and physical health, thus affecting a person's quality of life. Severe cases can even lead to suicide. It is estimated that one in six Australians will experience depression in their lifetime (Beyond Blue, 2014). The burden of disease gives an indication of of the loss of health and well being of Australians due to each disease (ABS, 2010). Depression and anxiety is the leading cause of burden among females, accounting for 10% of burden while it is the third leading cause for men, accounting for 4.8% (AIHW, 2003) (This was the most recent information found). Depression can affect all age groups but generally first starts to appear in adolescence and early adulthood (National Youth Mental Health Foundation, 2013).
Clinical depression is one of the most common mental illnesses around the world. Clinical depression is a mood disorder in which the person can experience extreme feeling of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration that can help barricade the function of dealing with everyday life. This feeling is for a long period of time. There are many different types of depression like chronic depression, seasonal depression, major depressive disorder and postpartum depression. This disease does not discriminate. It attacks males, females, the young, the old, the wealthy, the poor and everything in between. However, statistics show that there is a higher depression rate in the developed world compared to the developing. Researchers from the State University of Stony Brook, who partnered with WHO's World Mental Health, surveyed 90,000 people in 18 countries in a worldwide mental health questionnaire. The res...
As the youngest of five children she was often overlooked. The pride of the family often overrode the opportunity to receive health care, handouts and a decent chance to become something. My mother spent her childhood in a tiny house with her family and many relatives. She was never given the opportunities to excel in learning and life like my generation has. My grandfather was a carpenter and on that living fed many hungry mouths. But despite this already unfortunate lifestyle my mother maintained good grades and was on a path to overcoming her misfortune.
According to the World Health Organisation, depression ranks 4th among the 10l leading causes of the global burden of disease[1] with about 121 million people worldwide have some form of depression, although less than 25% have access to effective treatment[2].
Depression can affect anyone, being rich, poor, young, old, race, or religion (D-1). In the modern life, depression is the seriously psychological disease. WHO (2017) defined depression as a common mental disorder with more than 300 million people who are suffering the pain caused by the disease. Depression is completely different from badly mood and anxiety because when it lasts in a long time with moderate or severe intensity, it will become the serious health problem. This mental problem negatively effects on feelings, thinkings and actions at work, school and in the family (Parek, 2017). Especially, leading suicide is another dangerous sign of this mental disease. Rahhal (2017) has asserted that the most surprisingly growth in rates of depressions among the young and old people, but increased most fast
Poverty is prevalent throughout the world around us. We watch television and see famous people begging us to sponsor a child for only ten dollars a month. We think in our own minds that ten dollars is only pocket change, but to those children and their families, that ten dollars is a large portion of their annual income. We see images of starving children in far away countries, and our hearts go out to them. But we really do not know the implications of poverty, why it exists, or even what we can do to help combat this giant problem in our world.
