The Effects of Small Loans to Those in Need

This year Avila had the pleasure of being a part in fighting poverty. Interestingly enough it wasn’t a traditional way of donations. Companies such as FINCA and KIVA have found a new way of giving to those in need. They decided to give out loans to people across the world, who suffer financially. As a part of our first year project this year’s freshmen were able to be a part in giving out these loans to both individuals and families in need. This money came from us selling t-shirts and various donations As a part of this project we were required to get into groups of 2 and decide upon a recipient of our loans. Each loan was a total of $50 and we were able to personally choose who we wanted to sponsor which in my opinion was very cool. The recipient me and my partner picked was a young women named Liya Banda from Zambia. Liya’s story was very touching and was more impactful because she was very young and had already been through so much. Unfortunately Liya had to drop out of school in the 7th grade because her family couldn’t afford it. At age 13 Liya’s father died which forced her family to move into the homes of various relatives, causing them to separate. Liya was sent to her uncle’s house, where she was mistreated by her aunt. This made life very tough for Liya, it seemed as though her childhood was ripped out of her hands, forcing her to grow up fast. In order to support herself Liya began selling vegetables in her village market in order to help provide for her family. Soon enough Liya got married and had four children. Her husband’s business wasn’t doing well and he wasn’t able to provide for his family, so he eventually abandoned Liya and the children, leaving her to be the primary supporter and parent of her growing family... ... middle of paper ... ...ce was also a great way of showing what our school is about. Being a servant and being a part of the change is the direct definition of Avila’s values. Avila has always been a part of making a difference, as whole Avila expects each student and staff member to focus on change. Avila has always jumped at the idea of lending a hand to the community or anyone in need for that matter. Giving is what this school was built on. I learned that micro financing is an interesting and easy way of making a difference. Now that I know how to do it, I can make this an annual thing. This experience and all the experiences to come are very crucial each student. I know that I am always going to look back on this experience and know that I can always be a part of change. Now we all know that we can be a part of the change, and when we come together we can make an even bigger impact.
