The Effects of Music in the 1920’s

After the first world war there were many changes to the way Americans lived their lives. During this time industry boomed and unemployed people now held jobs. The economy was growing, people were making money which allowed more time for leisure. In the 1920’s came a new era of music called jazz. Jazz changed writing, fashion, the way people spent their free time, it changed peoples thoughts and attitudes towards life and towards racial discrimination. The Great Gatsby portrays the wealth and prosperity of America along with the leisure time the rich had to enjoy music. The entire structure of America changed because of the roaring 20's.
Jazz music was first introduced in America, it originated in New Orleans at the start of the roaring 20’s. The Jazz Age as it was called also had a great effect on writing and thus came from it was a genre of jazz poetry. Fashion was greatly influenced by the change in music as well. Because of the economic boom the consumer society was also booming and along with it was a new youth culture. Jazz music was a great force pushing this new youth culture, and by 1925 jazz was popular in every major city in the United States. The popularity of jazz music grew because of the fun and light nature it gave and it was also great dancing music. From this new music came a new dance called the Charleston. The Charleston consists of swaying arms and fast movement of the feet, it was popular to all, but flappers danced to it most of all. The previous victorian type of clothing was not suitable for the new Jazz music and dance, soon after shorter more scandalous dresses came into style.
