Democracy is considered as the ideal system for a government where everyone gets the right to vote and everyone can choose their leaders. It is a system where votes of the people are translated into representation. It is the only system where people have to the right to speak their mind and to express their opinion when it comes down to choosing their leaders. Every person’s vote is considered equal in this system and the opinion shared by majority of the population is used to administer the government. But it is not that simple. Democracy is a very complex system where translating votes by the people into representation has been an issue. Such complexity in the system is the reason why often votes of a large number of people of a state are not properly translated into representation. This comes as a disappointment to the population and discourages them from voting further because they think their vote does not matter and their vote will not make any difference. Apart from the complexities in the electoral systems, democratic system of the government as a whole has many flaws. Democracy does not last that long and with introduction of new governments come new laws in place. The economic structure of the state can be changed substantially which can destabilize the economy. With new governments come new global relationships with other countries and this point matters a lot especially if the previous government had signed a long-term agreement, which means the new government has to abide by the agreement. These different kinds of flaws in the system raises a question. Does democracy always work? If not, then why?
There are many reasons democracy does not always work. One the of the primary reasons is that candidates fool the population by making false promises and after winning the elections, exploit the population which leaves the population in complete disappointment. Exploitation leaves the state in a bad condition and becomes more difficult for the next government to mend it. Since governments have limited time in power, mending the damages done is also limited to an extent. The damage done is long-lasting and apart from that, the population is discouraged from voting since their needs are not fulfilled. Also, in some cases some candidates are in authority before the elections and coercion is used over their local population to vote for that candidate.
This will therefore be an insight into the factors that challenge the existence of proper democracy in developing countries, giving effect to the explanations through use of different examples of actual nations.
...due to its flaws and malfunctioning. Although democracy does not give ideal solutions to all the problems but this must also be considered that democracy has been the latest system of governance formed and still has also to improve to meet the future requirement and challenges faced by the mankind. Since no more adequate system is present as yet, therefore democracy is definitely not the vilest form government and it is in our best interest that we use the present form of democracy to solve our problems and work on it to improve it further so that the remaining failings could be dealt with, rather than just looking at the negative aspects that are always subjected to the live television shows and critiques, as Jane Addams says "the cure for the ills of Democracy is more Democracy"(pg 41). This way we might really get on our way to find the ideal system of governance.
The word Democracy has been defined a number of different ways by many people all over the country. This word has also meant different things over the years as things began to change throughout the United States. People in the past had different views on Democracy because life back then was much different than it is today. People realize that they really have a voice and a chance to fight and vote for what they believe in. The television show, “The Voice”, sees democracy as only the people who own an electronic device has the right to vote because there is not another way for people to get their vote in. On the other hand, Frederick Douglass sees democracy is only available to white men within the United States of America. Although democracy is usually defined as “a form of government in which people choose leaders by voting”, it’s sufficient to say that both “The Voice” and Frederick Douglass defined democracy a little bit differently, but still equally believe that the people are the ones who have the chance to make a difference and vote for what they think is right.
Democracy is a system entirely structured from people who make the democracy as much as the democracy makes people, so that makes it a very unique, well designed and good system. But it has one great weakness; when the people who rule the polis lack of virtue education the society corrupts and leads the people into a destruction.
The limitations of Democracy are clear, the complexity of its government, social divisions and other political, economic and social shortcomings detract from its successes. Additionally, it could be argued that democracy would not be as attractive as it is today had the world not witnessed the repression of authoritarian rule. Lack of personal freedoms, rapid change and many other faults in ancient democracy, fascism and communism are contrary to what people desire and resultantly enlighten what democracy advocates, aiding its increasing prevalence around the world today. Just as the late philosopher Aristotle said, “Man is by nature a political animal” (Wong/Kopstein, Sept. 12 lecture). People want political power, and so far democracy is their best attempt at achieving this.
Firstly, K. Isbester mentions that democracy has a different meaning for everyone, as some can define democracy as a good aspect for development, on the contrary other believe that it is nothing more than voting after several years. Although, Latin America see democratic g...
Democracy can be defined as a type of government in which individuals are guided by representatives whom they elected. It is a society of people, everything for the people and by the people. In this type of government, it is the individuals who are superior and independent. They are able to have control over the government and are free to elect a government of their own choice. Freedom has a lot to do with democracy, as it is the core component in this subject. Democracy relies on the following conditions: co-existence of ideas and of parties, the right to free discussion, universal adult suffrage and periodic relations. In a historical aspect, democracy was highly regarded in ancient Rome and Greece. However, it had very little success. In
In comparing the average citizen in a democratic nation, say the United States, to that of a non-democratic nation, for instance Egypt, it will be found that the citizen in the democratic nation is generally better off – free of persecution, free from fear of the authorities, and free to express his opinions on governmental matters. And while national conflicts occur everywhere, incidents like violent revolts have shown to be more prevalent in nations where citizens are not allowed to choose who governs them. It is slightly paradoxical that democracy, so inherently flawed in theory, can lead to such successful outcomes in practice. The question, then, becomes: “If democracy has so many weaknesses, why does it work?”
Democracy is one of the founding principles of the nation in that the majority should be represented by using their voting rights. This means that if even one person from out of the state of Alabama voted then it is an actual atrocity taking place before our eyes. This is how Democracy dies as the most corrupt and wealthy candidates, who pay their activists and potential voters, win out over those who campaign on policy.
What is democracy, and what are the benefits and disadvantages of it? This paper will focus primarily on three essays: The Social Contract by John Locke, Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau, and The Democratic Age by Fareed Zakaria. Each essay chosen is similar because each discusses what the advantages and disadvantages of free society are.
Throughout history different types of instrumental regimes have been in tact so civilizations remained structured and cohesive. As humanity advanced, governments obligingly followed. Although there have been hiccups from the ancient times to modern day, one type of government, democracy, has proven to be the most effective and adaptive. As quoted by Winston Churchill, democracy is the best form of government that has existed. This is true because the heart of democracy is reliant, dependent, and thrives on the populaces desires; which gives them the ability for maintaining the right to choose, over time it adjusts and fixes itself to engulf the prominent troubling issues, and people have the right of electing the person they deem appropriate and can denounce them once they no longer appease them. In this paper, the benefits of democracy are outlined, compared to autocratic communism, and finally the flaws of democracy are illustrated.
There have been enormous efforts to spread democracy as a political system throughout the world by the developed democratic countries and the international development organizations including the World Bank. By the late 1990s the United States alone spent over a half billion dollars to promote democratic expansion throughout the world (Diamond, 2003). These were done considering that the democratic system leads towards development. As a result in the late 20th century we saw a huge political transformation towards democracy. During the last few decades a huge number of countries adopted democracy as their political system. However, it retain a big question how far democracy is successful in bringing development of a country? At this stage, some people also criticizes the effort of democratization arguing that it is done without considering the context of a country, sometimes democracy is not ideal for all countries and it is an effort to extinct diversity of political system. In studying the literature regarding the debate, we found a paradoxical relationship between democracy and development. Some argue that democracy has failed to ensure expected outcomes in terms of development. While others confronted that democracy has a considerable impact on development. Another group of people argue that form of political system actually does not have any impact on development process. On the verge of these debates, some development institutions and academics throw light on why democracy is not working properly, and what measure should be taken to make it more successful in bringing effective development of developing countries. Consequently, this writing is an effort of revisiting the different views about impact of democra...
The foundation of the modern political system was laid in the times when the world was strangled in slavery. In those moments, enlightened minds in Greek came up with the new system that was there to remain for the next thousands of years. This system, now known as democracy, is a form of government in which supreme power is vested to the people themselves. People have the right to elect their leaders directly or indirectly through a scheme of representation usually involving periodically held free elections. A new democratic government is usually established after every 4-5 years, and it is trusted with the responsibility to cater to the needs of all the people irrespective of the fact that they voted for them or not. Although the minorities may not be very pleased with the idea of democracy, however, a democratic government is certainly the best because it establishes social equality among people, reduces the conflicts in the state to a minimum, gives the chance to vote repeatedly, and creates patriotism.
A democracy could only survive if people voice their opinions, ask questions, and if the society is educated. Disobedience leads to some of the most unfortunate of things, such as death. People either believe that the above information is 100 % spot on, while others believe none of it is true. Part of this is because people come from different places in the world and have many different opinions. The opinions may be about what allows a democracy to survive and why some of the most terrible things happen. A democracy is only one of the forms of government that allow a society to survive, whether or not it is the best one.
