In today’s business world, management can be found in every business. While the type of business a company is running determines their managerial needs, function, and role, essentially all managers execute some of the same fundamental functions ensuring their business runs efficiently. One of the leading roles of a manager is assisting employees in the direction of common goals. Essentially all managers play a vital role in today’s rapidly changing business organizations. This essay will discuss the technical, human, and conceptual traits of a manager and how these traits correspond with the planning, organizing, leading, and controlling needed in order for a manager to be successful in today’s business world.
Effective management skills are in high demand these days. Managers who possess well developed leadership skills, excellent communication skills, and who are also effective strategic thinkers are needed in organizations such as business, commerce, and industry. For a manager to be proficient at all levels they should possess communication, leadership, and time management skills. These skills are perhaps the heart and soul of all successful businesses and play an important role in the effective management of teams. A manager should be able to train their own team members and provide support with the team member’s learning enhancement skills. In my experience as a retail manager, it was essential for me to stay up-to-date with my leadership abilities and communication skills. I attended all leadership conferences that were available to me and I believe it made me a more effective manager.

In today’s competitive world, leadership skills are crucial for both personal and professional development. Leadership is an important function of management which helps an individual or a business to maximize efficiency and to achieve goals. Leadership has different meanings to various authors.Most commonly, leadership is defined as influence, that is, the art of influencing people so that they will strive willingly and enthusiastically toward the achievement of group goals. (Koontz). Leadership is the process of influencing the activities of either formal or informal group in the task of goal setting and goal achievement. A leader is one whose magnetic personality innervates people for some cause. Not by words, but by their actions is the way great leaders influence their followers. They do what they preach.

We live in an era of communication challenges. It is an age of increasingly scarce management and education to the markets of tomorrow. To solve this problem, to improve and restore the competitive edge of business, I recommend teaching leadership as well as organization. We need to move beyond the simplistic and boring, everyday organizational skills commonly taught in core courses in business schools. Important as these skills are, we need to redirect our foci towards the essential ingredient required to put these skills to work – leadership. As Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus have expressed it, “The problem with many organizations…is that they tend to be over managed and under led. There is a profound difference between management and leadership, and both are important.” “To manage” means “to bring about, to accomplish, to have charge or responsibility for, to conduct.” “Leading” is “influencing, guiding in direction, course, action, opinion.” Other characteristics include: motivating and inspiring individuals, providing direction and vision, earning the respect of others, turning talent and efforts into results, and being an excellent communicator and listener.
To be an effective manager one must be able to mange with purpose not just manage the daily activities. All of the manager’s responsibilities need to be molded and developed to align with the company’s vision and mission. Mintzberg discusses a model image of what a manager’s job looks like from the inside out. His concept of new managers are “putty to be molded” (Mintzberg, 2005, p. 55) provided insight that not everyone that is a manager should be a manager. Many new managers want to take their own direction and work towards their own vision of what should happen. Whereas, managing with purpose is the fundamental framework of a manager’s job. I have always maintained that managers and leaders had very different roles and not every manager can lead and not every leader can manage. A manager focuses on deadlines, metrics and budgets while the leader motivates the people, develops the culture and focuses on the vision of the business. I found it interesting that Mintzberg contends an organization becomes dysfunctional if the manager is not a leader. I feel that organizations, in the 21st century, need to have managers that lead and leaders that manage. These positions should be synonymous in order to synergize innovation and cultivate creativity.
Effective managers optimize the use of resources. They gain a thorough understanding of each resource to maximize the value of an investment. For instance, they would ensure the owner’s manual for a new piece of equipment so that users can maximize the equipment’s benefits and features. They would also focus attention on the organizations most valuable resource – their human capital. Effective leadership associated with the competent strategy can assist as a commanding tool to accomplish great triumph in a fast patrolled business environment. With well thought skills and tactful channels of leadership new heights of success can be achieved.
Mintzberg(2013, P.44) stated that managing combines all these skills, like leading ,doing, thinking, and deciding and more, together, not applying individually. A good manger should be able to mater all these skills to fulfill the job of management. But the thing is what helpful competencies should a manager have to be able to fulfill? Mintzberg stated his own theory which is managing can be known from on three main aspects : information, people, and action. For the information aspect, a manager should be able to communicate and control; for the people aspect, a manager should be able to lead and link; and for action aspect, a manager should be able to do and deal. These are the good methods for a manager to actually manage something well.
