The style of leadership used by managers should depend upon the type of staff within a company. Different situations require different approaches and skills. It is wrong to say that there is one best style of leadership which can be applied in conjunction with all subordinates. Mullins seventh edition text book defines leadership as ‘a relationship through which one person influences the behaviour or actions of other people’. Boot et al (1977) refers to it as ‘one of the most fundamental aspects of management.’ The proof that there is no one best style of leadership lies with the number of leadership theories which exist in today’s society. From contingency theories to transformational theories, whether a firm is lead in an autocratic, democratic, or a laissez-faire structure, is reliant upon the culture, structure and task of the specific organisation. I will be using Marks and Spencer to illustrate concepts of leadership, exploring the idea that there is no one best style of leadership.
Marks and Spencer, ranked one of ‘the most admired companies in the UK’, was once considered a well trusted, expanding organisation, and was the benchmark to which many firms compared themselves. However, Marks and Spencer’s long term success was not to last, as ‘the company saw its sales stagnate, profits collapse, and market share fall’ Mellahi et al (2002). The firm needed to introduce a new strategy for the future, so with a new chairman, Peter Salsbury, closures of overseas branches, and division of roles, Marks and Spencer took its first steps to recovery. Marks and Spencer’s previous Path- Goal approach to leadership had meant that ‘the company had not changed its visions and aims for almost half a century’ MacMillan and Tampoe (2002)....

Whitehead claims that ‘you don’t have to be a boss to be a leader’. As long as you possess the qualities that produce effective leadership, these skills will affect the group of followers positively. Whether this theory should be used within a specific organisation depends upon the particular circumstance in question.
It is the situational approach of leadership that is most important when discussing the statement in question. It focuses on the importance of the situation with regards to which leadership approach must be used. This is the main factor which will influence the style of leadership to be most successful. Despite this, some leaders who possess all the desired skills to become an effective leader, may not perform.
You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink is a proverb I have heard since I was young. Leadership is the skill of influencing people to accomplish goals (Huber, 2014). In today’s world with policy and technological changes the leaders must use their leadership skills to not only get the horse to the water, have him drink, but also do it with a smile an invite others to join him. Leaders use a variety of styles to accomplish their goals. I will discuss the leadership style that I utilize most often, how my style relates to leadership theories and the work type environment it is most useful in.
In this section of the paper, I will discuss current relevant literary articles that are related to ineffective leader skills, effective leadership skills, and inadequate communication skills. These scholarly references will show how others are dealing with the issues of ineffective leadership skill. It will also illustrate what can be done to improve poor leadership behavior. By reviewing these references, I will be able to help my organization become more successful.
Our leadership in this world has changed and affected us greatly. Leadership is being about to lead an organization with many people and to have control in the right way. “ The Leader of the Future” a book by Peter F. Drucker gives us information on why and how it is to be such a great leader. We need better leaders and we need them to guide us and help us along the way. Without leadership, our world would be in such danger and we America would be going through a lot.
I first encountered the significance of leadership in the tenth grade. Berry College the largest campus in the U.S. was in search of school ambassadors to serve part in a seminar known as HOBY. To get chosen you had to write an essay describing your leadership roles, and at that moment I thought that I did not have any. I literally did not know what it meant to be a leader. I had to brainstorm till I remembered going through one of the most difficult times of my life. The lack of understanding the English language became one of my biggest obstacles, and even caused me to repeat a chapter of my life. However, I did not cease; I continued to fight and strove to help others who were susceptible of following my steps. I used my story as an example, and hoped that it would make a difference in someone else’s life.
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.

The leadership is a privilege and it is such a privilege and an honor which will carry the tremendous responsibility which will inspire others to direct them to accomplish goals and vision of the organization. Leadership is about influencing the people, by producing direction, purpose and motivating in order to accomplish the mission, vision and improving the organization. The leadership philosophy is evolved based on the experiences, both positive and negative, in most of the initiatives and activities that we undertake. It is also one among the collaboration and teamwork within which the team members can utilize each other’s strengths to counter the weaknesses of the individuals. By observing, introspecting and experimenting we can developed a leadership paradigm which is inclusive, collaborative and proactive. We can develop the ability to recognize which will approach in order to reach the productive conclusion. The great leaders know their limitations and are capable at utilize their strengths and also the strengths of others to compensate.
The area of team leadership attracts a lot of attention in the modern world because of the need to assemble and deploy diverse teams for the completion of projects. The future of many corporations relies more and more on the kind of team leadership they have for their projects. This paper explores a number of facets that constitute effective team leadership.
A leader's situation or environment plays a critical role in his or her success or failure, especially in today's ever-changing organizations and marketplace. The contingency and situational leadership perspectives, such as Fiedler's Contingency Theory of Leadership and Hersey and Blanchard's Situational Leadership Theory, proposed that a leader's effectiveness is influenced by situational factors as well, rather than simply traits and behaviors. Both leadership theories introduced a pragmatic approach to leadership by recognizing leadership as an interactive process involving the leader, the follower, and other internal and external organizational factors. Finally, leadership results in the followers’ behavior, that is purposeful and goal-directed which must be in some organized setting (Leadership Theories and Studies, 2009). Some people believe leadership and management are one in the same; however, this
Leadership can be shown through any person in any type of situation. In a classroom discussion, on the playing field, or in public a sign of a leader is evident. A person is born a leader. Certain humans know what to do when the time calls for it. Many people in positions can be entitled a leader such as basketball players. Even a famous movie star can be given this title. These people are not true leaders. True leaders are the belaboring teachers and the intellectual speakers. These are the people who show that leadership is an action, not a position.
Organizations have leaders who are effective and ineffective. Many of us want to be leaders but, do we have what it takes to be effective or are we going to be ineffective. Leaders are people who build their organization and employees up. Ineffective leaders are those who only care about getting a check. This paper will discuss effective and ineffective leaders.
