Casinos are a place where you can try your luck and win money. Many casinos allow people to smoke within them. Gambling and smoking can both become very addictive for people who partake in them. A pathological gambler is considered to have an impulse disorder that “describes a gambler who loses control over gambling behavior with damaging personal, social and financial effects” (Dunstan). These gamblers also have problems with “irritability, extreme moodiness, problems with personal relationships (including divorce), absenteeism from work, family neglect, and bankruptcy” (Griffiths, 2007 as cited in Griffiths 2). “Current smoking in adult gamblers has been associated with greater anxiety, depression, drug and alcohol use, and treatment for …show more content…

Daily smokers also gambled on more days, spent more money gambling, craved gambling more, and had a lower perceived control over gambling than non-smokers (Petry 745). The “Gambling Addiction and its Treatment Within the NHS. London: British Medical Association” study resulted in smokers being more likely to have gambled in the past week (51% smokers to 38% non-smokers) and year (79% smokers to 65% non-smokers) (Griffith 2007). Smokers also were 3 times more likely to be a problem gambler. “Being in poor health and or having a limiting longstanding illness was associated with problem gambling” (Griffith 2007). Both results came out similar in that smokers were more likely to gamble and have problems with gambling. As for non-smoking laws, according to the “Smoking and Gambling: A Trance Inducing Ritual” study, smoke free laws led to gambling industry revenue decline and a reduction of problem gambling. It states that smokers are about 36% of the casino participants, but put in about 50% of its revenue. Problem gamblers put in 42.3% of the casino’s revenue (Harper 2003). Although the laws make a decline in revenue, because there is no more smoking in the casinos, more nonsmokers will be willing to go gambling and the revenue will even itself back out. Today there have been strives to make

One of the main arguments against the legalization of any form of gambling is that it invites a criminal element into the community. In theory, legalized gambling is made available to the public, the public gambles, people lose their money and go broke, and as a result turn to a life of crime to support their families and/or their gambling affliction. A community’s crime rate is bound to shoot up after the installation of any tourist attraction, e.g. a racino. While these racinos would attract predomi...
Smoking is a lifestyle, a habit, and a trend. Smoking has become a social activity among teens, connecting them through the craving of a smoke. Smoking is seen as seductive and cool in the media and movies which influences teenagers to smoke even more. The World Health Organization has stated that “Tobacco kills around 6 million people each year. More than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.” As of April 2016, only 7% of teenagers in the U.S. smoke, but it is said that tobacco use will kill 8 million people annually by 2030. 99% of adult smokers start in their years as teenagers. Smoking is an epidemic that has taken control of people’s lives since 1881 and the media since the early 1900s. Smoking currently kills about 440,000 people a year in the U.S. I feel that it is an issue because it is the #1 most preventable way to die, but people still continue to smoke because of how it looks and how they are perceived as a person if they do. The fact that people become addicted to a trend that will attribute to their death for the sake of being thought of as cooler, is a problem that needs to be addressed.
Gambling... Who does not like to gamble? People play lotteries, bet on sport games or try their luck on slot machines with a thought to win some amount of money. In fact, this excitement for gambling can be seen even from early ages; for example, ancient Egyptians used to play dice in 2000 BC or the first casinos opened their doors to customers during the Greeco-Roman period ( Whittaker and Cushman 1 ). Gambling has become an important part of several people’s daily lives, so much so that some people are willing to put their lives savings at risk just for the win. Gambling is something that can start out as something very small, with trips to the casino here and there, or maybe just buying a couple lottery tickets. These small things can start slowly and sooner or later, sometimes even many years later, they can add up and become necessary in life. Then without even noticing it, these issues slowly turn in to a habit and begin to take over the individuals entire life despite it being so innocent and carefree in the beginning. While the numbers of people addicted to gambling is rising, many people in the United States
Compulsive gambling is considered to be a type of impulse-control disorder. Even when the addict is aware that their addiction is negatively affecting their life, they cannot stop the impulse to gamble regardless of the consequences. The mental health community distinguishes between problem gambling and gambling addiction. Problem gambling is any gambling behavior that affects your life. Gambling addiction is where the person is unable to resist the impulse to gamble. The must gamble regardless of the consequences. A common myth is that problem gamblers have to gamble every day. When in reality it can be either frequent or infrequent. It is normally cyclic. Where there are periods of gambling, followed by rest periods and then back to gambling. People can go for months without gambling and still be considered to have a gambling addiction (Saison).
As of 2002, more than 430,000 people every year die from use of tobacco- more than AIDS, alcohol, drugs, abuse, car accidents, murders, suicides, and fires COMBINED (“Cigarette Smoking” 2). Scary, isn't it? That even though cigarettes can cause that many deaths, people still smoke them? Cigarette smoking is a serious problem in the United States. Especially when it is done in public. Public smoking should be banned because it is a hazard to the people around.
‘’Problem gambling is characterized by difficulties in limiting money and or time spent on gambling, which leads to adverse consequences for the gambler, others or for community’’. An estimated 2.5 per cent of Australians experience moderate to severe problems caused by gambling This means that up to 5 million Australians feel the health, social and financial impacts of problem gambling, including friends, families and employers of people with a gambling problem. These gamblers are the ones a majority of people see as having a genuine addiction. They are players who have lost control of the games being played. Typically, those who are compulsive gamblers effect those around them negatively (family, friends, & coworkers). Compulsive Gamblers can also have the tendency to lie a lot, steal, or get involved in embezzlement.() While working at a gas station once I have come across many types of gamblers. Very rarely though, do I see the compulsive ones. However, one time we had this man come in on the regular, requesting about $80 in scratch offs and bid his farewell. Unfortunately, we all knew he wasn’t going to leave. After scratching off all the tickets he had purchased, he would come to redeem a few of the winners in the pile and buy more. Myself and my coworkers always knew when he would come into the store, there was no chance he was going to leave without scratching off a big winner… no matter how many times the man would say “this is the last one.” Most of the time he would spend a good hour with us, before he decided to leave. It was always kind of sad to watch him play sometimes. His addiction always showed through his body language and tone of voice. So in addition to any other addiction in the world, gambling has rehab centers and doctors willing to help with those who cannot
Gambling addiction is an issue found in numerous areas where gambling is legal. People who are addicted to gambling, also know as problem gamblers, face many health risks including depression, suicidal thoughts, loss of sleep, loss of appetite, migraine and anxiety in addition to marriage breakdown, problems at work and bankruptcy (9). About 2 percent of adults are thought to be problem gamblers (1). In today’s society this costly addiction is not often considered to be a common problem among those who gamble. Only a small amount of states in the U.S. give enough attention toward this rising problem of people that are sometimes even willing to commit crimes just to aid their addiction. In the past our government has sought out a few solutions that help those who have developed an addiction and prevent a further increase in the number of people becoming addicted. Personally, my outlook on the problem is that it needs a better solution. I think that a higher funding to gambling addiction clinics, more ordinance and restriction laws, and more prevention and awareness programs should bee brought into consideration in order to lower the amount of people who become addict to gambling.
Gambling addiction or compulsive gambling is a worldwide problem that many people suffer from and it can strain relationships, interfere with work, and lead to financial problems. Some people may do things they never thought they would do, such as stealing, just so they could keep on gambling. Many people think that they cannot stop, but with the right help they can regain control of their life. Compulsive gamblers keep gambling weather they are having a good day or bad day, this is one of the main reasons why they end up going bankrupt.
As individuals, we are responsible for ourselves, including the decisions we make. However, with the temptations of making “easy money” and the dreams of hitting that million-dollar jackpot, these decisions make it hard for individuals to resist, which traps them into making poor decisions. With today’s economy, individuals are susceptible to mounting pressures from finances, work and a fast paced lifestyle. Even though these are everyday factors in our lives, they contribute to our stress level. Many times it is drugs or alcohol that individuals turn to, but there is also another very addicting behavior that many people turn to, gambling. There has been a rise in pathological gambling in the past 10 years and it is only increasing. With this fact, gambling is only banned in two states in the whole United States of America. What are the problems associated with pathological gambling and is the government and casinos acting ethically by propagating such an addicting act?
