eBay, the online auction web site, was founded in San Jose, California on September 3, 1995, by computer programmer Pierre Omidyar as AuctionWeb. The very first item sold on eBay was a broken laser pointer for $14.83. Chris Agarpao was hired as eBay's first employee and Jeff Skoll was hired as the first president of the company in 1996. In November 1996, eBay entered into its first third-party licensing deal with a company called Electronic Travel Auction to use SmartMarket Technology to sell plane tickets and other travel products. The company officially changed the name of its service from AuctionWeb to eBay in September 1997. They went public in 1998, and both Omidyar and Skoll became instant billionaires.
eBay Inc. is a company that is built on commerce, trust, and opportunity. “eBay brings together millions of people every day on a local, national and international basis through an array of websites that focus on commerce, payments, and communications (eBay.com).” The eBay Marketplace creates a powerful online platform for the sale of goods and services by a community of individuals and small businesses. On any given day, millions of collectibles, appliances, computers, furniture, equipment, vehicles, and other miscellaneous items are listed and available through auction-style and fixed priced trading. With millions of buyers and sellers worldwide, eBay offers localized sites all over the world. They have sites in Europe, North America, and Asia.

In the article “Inside Amazon: Wrestling Ideas in a Bruising Workplace” by Jodi Kantor and David Streitfeld, both authors noted Amazon’s business and work strategy as harsh and strict but rewarding and life-changing at the same time. Apparently, Amazon’s business model focuses on harsh and strict regulations to keep employees more motivated, productive, and innovative. In today's competing world, many organizations are rethinking their strategies in terms of the online business and its capabilities and culture. Organizations are taking advantage of the widespread web to buy and sell goods from other companies and recently from individual customers. Exploiting these opportunities of convenience, availability and widespread reach of the web or Internet, many companies such as Amazon have benefited from the use of web successfully.
Launched by Jeff Bezos, the Amazon.com website started in 1995 and is today considered as one of the most prominent retail website on the internet with a record turnover of US$ 14.87 billion in 2007. Jeff Bezos’s intention was to create an internet based company with the most dedicated product portfolio on the internet where customers could find anything they might want. Amazon’s success is based on technology, services and products (Jens et al., 2003).
When Amazon.com first began in 1995, as strictly a book retailer, Bezos knew he had discovered an excellent company. After all, a physical bookstore cannot stock anywhere close to the number of books Amazon can offer online. Within a year, the company had a customer base of approximately 340,000 consumers and daily site visits were huge as well. But Bezos wanted to expand the company to offer music and DVDs, because he realized there was little or no barrier of entry. In the next years Amazon would emerge as a marketplace, expanding the company globally offering products from toys to kitchenware. Because of the relatively cheap prices Amazon was offering and also the growing number of online shoppers, the company was doing tremendous amounts of sales and creating profits.

Amazon.com, an online retail company that provides a variety of unique products and services to its customers at cheap prices via the internet, for the past five years have tripled its sales to more than $60 billion a year. The company’s willingness to take a large hit on its margins has contributed significantly to its 35% to 40% revenue growth in past quarters. To increase the company’s income and sales, it has utilized a number of strategies (Form 10-K, 2014). This includes; investing in the growth of its digital services. This strategy is seeing strong growth and segment. Analysis shows that Amazon Web Services has operated up to annual revenue rate of over $2 billion over the past years. The introduction of new tablets such as Apple’s iPad mini and Microsoft’s surface tablet pose greater competition for the tablet market. Amazon has been able to compete in the tablet market in the past because of its Kindle e-readers that have been priced lower than the iPad. The company is investing in the online video industry. It has entered into several and expensive contracts with the aim of building digital media correction. The company has recently entered into a multiyear agreement with Viacom to license television shows, including children’s shows like “Dora the Explorer” and “BobSponge Square Pants.” (Tsukayama, 2013)
