Early Stages Of Rugby In Australia Rugby Union is said to be ‘the sport from heaven’. It is played throughout the world, and has its origins from soccer in England in the early 19th Century. However, some evidence shows that Indigenous Australians were playing their own form of football, before the Europeans arrival. The painting on the right depicts an Aboriginal tribe in Victoria who are playing a kick and catch ball game in the background. This was before the european arrival. Rugby Union has a long line of legends, and most of them happen to be Australian. As early as 1820s there were reports of rugby being played by men on passing ships who were seeking a break from their constant life at sea. Throughout the years hundreds of thousands of young children have decided to sign up for rugby in Australia, and some of them went on to represent this country playing for the wallabies. Six years after the creation of the game by Webb Ellis, Sydney monitors recorded that “The soldiers of the Sydney barracks had amused themselves with a game of football”. Service teams then had beg...
Australian Rules Football (AFL) was formed in 1858 and to this day is the largest Football code in Australia. The Sherrin is the official ball of the AFL, and sells over 500,000 balls into the Australian market each year. They have developed an inseparable relationship in Australian sporting culture.
Marn-grook was a sport played by the some Aboriginal tribes, which had a number of similarities to Australian Rules football including the size of the field, the use of hand and foot, and the distinctive overhead mark (Hallinan 977). It was also reported that Tom Wills, who played a significant role in developing the game, played marn-grook with Aboriginal children, but this claim is unsubstantiated (Hibbins 8). While there is no certain evidence marn-grook influenced the game, it is still possible that precolonial Aboriginal traditions, notably the games they played may have influenced the game. Considering Aboriginal games tested their athleticism and dexterity, skills that are also showcased in Australian Rules football, it could be inferred that the creators of Australian Rules football may have taken this into consideration when creating the sport. The overall lack of support for claims of Aboriginal influence on the sport may be a result of the Aboriginals being seen as lesser than whites; it is possible they did not want the first authentic Australian sport to be associated with the Aboriginals. Recent efforts such as the Mabo case have been made to restore Aboriginal traditions (Hirst 11), which may have spurred recent discussion that Australian Rules football has Aboriginal influence. Even though the claims of Aboriginal influence on Australian
Football can be traced by rugby and soccer. Walter Camp is the “Father of Football” (Bennett). The first American football game played in the 1860’s (Bennett). Football has a lot of history in the game. The rules are important to the game. The beginning of the National Football League is still going strong today. Strategies and formations of the game are important to study. Football is an aggressive sport and is one of the most played sports in the United States.
Participation in sports and games has long been a part of Native culture. The most significant example of a sport invented and played by Natives is lacrosse. Lacrosse is still designated as the official sport of Canada despite the overwhelming popularity of hockey (http://canada.gc.ca). Lacrosse was one of many varieties of indigenous stickball games being played by Native Americans and Canadians at the time of European contact. Almost exclusively a male team sport, it is distinguished from other stick and ball games, such as field hockey or shinny, by the use of a netted racquet with which to pick the ball off the ground, throw, catch and vault it into or past a goal to score a point.
The origin of soccer in America has long been disputed. Some say that it was brought to America by immigrants. People claim that it was brought by the settlers of Jamestown, New Orleans, and Ellis Island. However, there is another reasonable source that people have discovered. It is have been revealed that the American Indians used to play a game similar to modern soccer called Pasuckuakohowog. It literally translates to “they gather to play ball with the foot”. In Pasuckuakohowog, there were goals that were a half-mile wide and a mile apart from each other. Games involved up to 500 people and were very dangerous. Records show that the game was played in the 17th century. This could prove that Pasuckuakohowog is what started it all for soccer in America.
At the same time that sport is a product of social reality, it is also unique. No other institution, except perhaps religion, commands the mystique, the nostalgia, the romantic ideational cultural fixation that sport does. No other activity so paradoxically combines the serious with the frivolous, playfulness with intensity, and the ideological with the structural. (Frey & Eitzen 504)
Football is said to have originated from the Han Dynasty in China, from around two or three B.C. Although there is no specific creator of Football, there is evidence that the Chinese ‘dribbled’ balls made of various different animal skins filled with light-weight materials. After dribbling the ball, they were to kick the ball into a small net. Along with being a leisure activity for the ancient Chinese, evidence has been found that they also used it for training their vast army, the only difference in the training was the height of the nets. The balls were to be kicked into a net that was thirty feet or higher off the ground in order to make the Chinese army ready to move and also to make them stronger in the legs. Since the Chinese played ‘Football’ there have been many advancements in the game around the world and the rules have also changed greatly.
Rugby is the true sport of men, because you wear no pads, and it is even more violent than football; however, football requires that you wear pads, thus being the true sport of want-to-be men.
Many of the games we play today is of ancient origin and even then provided mass entertainment of fans. In the beginning, ancient sports like the Olympic Games started out as rituals to honor gods or a leader and later developed into public events with festivals that surrounded the games (Jewell, Moti, & Coates, 2012). Today festivals are still seen during the Olympics Games, pre-game and post-game activities are held for NFL games, and fan’s host parties on game day surrounding favorite sporting events. Interesting, ancient sporting events began as a way to help individuals prepare for warfare. Individuals in ancient spots competed to help prepare themselves for military fighting, t...
This stating of terms of the definition of sport is arguably the most prominent of arguments in this chapter. As Donald Kyle, author of Sport and Spectacle, rightly suggests, some may indeed question his approach to the exclusion of fencing, duelling and gladiatorial combat. Whilst other reviewers such as Stephen Instone comment on Poliakoff’s general lack of argument, and some just waive this chapter as satisfactory, All...
Football, which is commonly known today as Soccer, began in Europe during the Middle Ages (Leibs 67). “By the early 1600s, the game developed a...
Football dates back as far as thousands of years ago. There are records that show that ancient civilizations of Greece, Egypt, and China (among others) played an age-old form of football with a stuffed leather ball. Early games in Old England were like mob riots. There were no rules; it was anything goes! The games were so rowdy and violent that many English rulers tried to outlaw them. But it didn’t work. In fact, English travelers took the game with them, spreading it all around the globe. But there needed to be rules. In 1863 the Football Association was formed, or FA, in England. They developed the first real set of rules for modern soccer, or football, as we know it. And actually, the word “soccer” came from their name, specifically from the word “assoc”.
Football is a full contact sport that millions of fans watch every season even though it is not a worldwide sport yet. Baseball may be America’s past time but football is America’s obsession. It is played on a field but the athletes seem more like gladiators fighting for blood in the arena for the amusement of their fans. The sport has changed drastically over the years into an event unlike any other, from gaining fans to implementing new rules and regulations in order to keep players safe.
Modern soccer was created in 1876 and can be traced back to Ancient China. It has been noted by “ Who Invented Football” that around 476 B.C. Cuju, also know as “ kick the ball with foot”, was played with a leather ball stuffed with feathers. The game got so popular that the military used the sport to keep soldiers physically
Rugby is a sport that was invented in Europe supposedly as a spinoff in soccer supposedly in 1823, but had yet to develop into a full-fledged sport in 1871. In 19th century soccer (here forth referred to properly as football) players were allowed to pick up the ball and free kick it, which in Rugby is referred to as a dropkick. As time passed many variations of football and rugby traveled across the European/Asian region until they distinguished themselves as different sports and established specific rules that correspond to each. This sport is very clearly a terrific example of a cause and effect situation, from the reasons behind its origin to everyday games it is the perfect real world example. To this day Rugby continues to attract many viewers due to its fast pace, various options for scoring, and violence, and due to this, it is one of the most enjoyable games to watch.
