Like many modern Americans I prefer to spend my free time just relaxing and catching up on my favorite television shows, until the day I wondered to myself, does watching too much television have a negative effect on people? After finding many excellent sources I have learned that watching excess amounts of television has a number of negative effects that I will discuss. Television has been proven to have negative effects on people’s physical health, intelligence and physiologic health. I will also discuss the repercussions of television in productivity and in modern social lives.
Throughout the years television watching has been connected to negative health effects in people, although many of these health assumptions have been false there is still many proven dangers of watching excess television. In a study performed by Stephen P. Yang PhD it is shown that excess amounts of screen time has adverse influence on retinal microvascular structure that can lead to vision complications. Another health concern caused by watching excess amounts of television is the effect of television on exercise, a person’s fitness can be severely damaged by sitting around and viewing television for many hours a day without exercise (Hancox 4.) Shockingly after many tests were conducted by Robert J Hancox, Barry J Milne, and Richie Poultonresults, the results showed that television viewing during childhood and adolescence is associated with obesity, poor cardio respiratory fitness, raised serum cholesterol, and cigarette smoking in early adulthood ( Hancox 4.) In conclusion watching excessive amounts of television can damage tour physical health, social life, and psychological health. Although watching television can have some positive effects like all bad habits it should only be done in moderation. Imagine what you could accomplish with decreased television time, you could be more productive, social, and become healthier. I believe that television viewing should decrease greatly thus leading to improved lives and couture. After reading this essay I hope that you will feel motivated to cut back on your screen time and live your live to the fullest.

Unfortunately, this argument is unsuccessful because of the weak execution but it has potential for success if exaggeration is limited and scientific evidence is given. Referencing journals and clinical research can be beneficial for this argument, since health matters are of concern. Kopel paints individuals with the same brush in this article, and fails to acknowledge the unique details of genetics and specific television channels. This article does promote future talks about how simple leisure activities in life could be far more dangerous than expected, especially when compared with a massive threat. In the essay "Why We Tuned Out" by Karen Springen she brings up many facts of how TV is bad for kids. She has many details explaining her topic and contains some good advice of how TV is bad for children. She claims that children who watch television more than 10 hours a week are likely to become overweight and are slow to learn in school. TV contains many events in our social life. It contains many educated channels, but some that arn't willing for kids to watch.
American pop culture has come a long way in the last few decades: from the rock 'n’ roll boom of the fifties, to the hippie aesthetic of the seventies, to the electronic age of the nineties. Pop culture clearly fluctuates at a rapid pace and even though fads have come and gone, one thing has remained viable even in more contemporary times: the TV set. On top of that, never has the world seen a greater peak in technology than it has in recent years, and the television is no exception. Unfortunately, as fascinating as these advancements may sound, it is generally presumed that the television—as with much modern pop culture tech—has had and continues to have detrimental effects on Western culture. Given that the TV has been a predominant force for the last sixty years, it’s safe to assume that most have heard the pervasive statement of how television "rots your brain.” By contrast, the benefits of this technology are rarely discussed and when the topic does arise, it seems to be hastily dismissed as “phooey.” Despite these labels, some would argue that television pop culture not only provides a form of recreational relaxation, but also has the potential to enhance cognitive capabilities.
According to scholars, the addiction to television is becoming more and more common worldwide, the more we watch it, the more shortsighted, and narrow-minded we become. Unfortunately, it is fast becoming as popular and dangerous as drugs (Winn 5). According to Winn, those who frequently watch television develop problems with their eyes and back and they may become obese. There is also a lot of time wastage as statistics show that frequent viewers have three or more average hour of daily watching and report their feelings of less productivity after watching. Further observations are that television addicts may become antisocial to themselves, friends, family, and society.

Consistently, everywhere, in this century there seems to be some form of a TV screen. These screens appear in restaurants, schools, at work, at home, and quite possibly more. What is forgotten in society is how that screen may affect the lives of the children in this modern world. When children are constantly watching a television screen there may be consequences to their health and education. Most parents do not have the ability to control what is shown on TV. Many programs disagreeably display marathons after school and during holidays. Supposedly, adult shows are only showed late at night, but with movies becoming more and more explicit, even bed time can’t stop the most determined child. Children’s problems in education and health are a direct result of the amount of TV watched.
TV is not a magic box in which to lose yourself. It’s also too powerful of a tool to be ignored. Like many gadgets that came before or after, the television is neither friend nor foe, good nor bad, rather it is a tool to be used by smart people who have the common sense to use it well. It may be hard to admit, but television has become an intricate part of our everyday lives. People children often find themselves sitting in front of the television screen for a longer period of time than before and this has evolved immensely over the past few years. In this article, “The Trouble with Television,” by the author Marie Winn, mentions that addiction of television is negative effects on children and families. It keeps the families from doing other things and it’s a hidden competitor for all other activities. Television takes place of play and on top of that kids who watch a lot of television grow uncivilized. The social effects of television are numerous and definitely vary in positive and negative ways. Since television was first introduced it’s been a very large part of America’s society. Television started as a form of entertainment that would be watched by the family for an hour a night as a relaxing way of getting away from the stresses of real life.
