Report #2: Do Childrens Toys Reflect Their Information and Sensory Processing Abilities
There were two choices that I've made that I felt were the best choices for toys that would aid in the psychological developments of infants. One of the choices that I choose were books. I didn't choose a specific book but books in general that are appropriate for the childs age. The reason that I made this first choice is because I feel that books can be used to help develop a childs perceptual skills, while at the same time, help develop their literacy skills from an early age. When parents expose their children to literature, even before they know how to read, speak, or write, they are helping the child develop their language, reading, and perceptual abilities. Toy stores are perfect places for a sociologist to use their sociological imagination. Gendering and racism is thought to be something that is socially constructed as opposed to biologically constructed. Gendering starts during infancy, and around 2 years old children start to internalize these gender differences. I argue that children’s toys help socialize children into gender specific roles. Toy stores, like Target and Toys R Us help us understand what types of toys help to gender children. I will explain how the toys in the toy aisles differ and compare. Not all toys are either male or female, some toys are gender neutral.
As children begin to develop and grows, they all are curiosity and learning about the world around them that need to develop their thinking and learning more that included toys. Toys helps children to used their imagines and learning skills to play and imagines as heroes from the stories and children television show which Jean Piaget believe that toys can help and enhance the children’s cognitive development that is defined as the construction of thought processes, including remembering, problem solving, and decision-making, from childhood through adolescence to adulthood. There have been many studies done to find how music influences a child’s development. The College Entrance Examination Board discovered that students who took music appreciation classes had higher verbal and math scores than those who did not take the classes. (Stephens 2003) The U.S. Department of Education found that in 25,000 secondary schools, students who were highly involved in the music program did much better in math than any other students. Since this study has yet to be thoroughly examined and replicated, it is hard to give weight to the argument. The fact that the study does not involve infant participants also contributes to the issue that studies involving babies are lacking, and thus it is difficult to support the theory that babies are able to be “made smarter” by the effects of Mozart’s music.
This review aims to address the debate as to whether or not playing classical music enhances the cognitive development of infants. This question is raised in response to the claim made by music educator Don Campbell (1997), who states that ‘playing Mozart to babies makes them smarter’, by aiding their intellectual and creative development. It is important to determine if there is sufficient evidence behind this statement as people are paying money for their children to experience the claimed effects. This review will draw upon, analyse and interpret a range of empirical research studies involving school-aged children to adults exposed to different forms of music (including Mozart) to measure the effects. Campbell’s claim will be critically evaluated and proved otherwise that playing Mozart to babies does not improve overall intelligence. It will be argued that the empirical studies are based on children and young adults not infants, that the effects were found to be temporary and relative to specific measure on intelligence, and that other forms of music can influence spatial reasoning.
Parents are always looking for new ways to help their children learn and grow. Many do not know that the key to this has been right under their nose their entire lives. The answer to this is literally around us every day. Music, surrounds us literally from the time we wake up until we fall asleep at night. We as humans simply cannot avoid it, as it is such a huge part of our culture. Many studies have proven that music improves not only our mood but also has numerous other positive advantages. Such as improved cognitive ability as this skill works numerous parts of the brain simultaneously. This in itself has attributed to a higher intelligence in adolescents at an earlier age. Improving numerous areas of the cognitive abilities including speech, spelling, and reading abilities.

The correlation between music and individuals is a very heavily researched topic. This literature review will critically evaluate the claim made by Don Campbell (1997, p.24) that ‘playing Mozart makes babies smarter’. This review will look at the history of the Mozart effect and also look at a range of sources that support and also go against the claim that the Mozart effect makes babies smarter. These claims will be analysed through the three main measurements in relation the Mozart effect these are spatial reasoning, arousal and also mood.

It can be proven, through literary research and personal experiences, that music has a positive effect on learning and memory. It can be concluded that these positive effects have an impact on patients with Alzheimer’s, on the motor skills and auditory memory of mentally disabled children, on students attempting to remember subject manner that they are learning, and on the affectivity of advertisements. On a personal note, music has facilitated my ability to remember things, both positive and negative, a number of times. For example, in high school I memorized the days of the week in French by singing them along with a tune that was already familiar to me. I have also had multiple experiences in which I remember things that I do not want to remember such as advertisements and negative experiences because they were accompanied with specific music. Despite the miniscule negative effects of music on memory, the powerful ability of music to trigger memory production and recall is undeniably beneficial. The profound effect of music on memory and learning makes music a great tool for helping people who want to improve cognitive function, whether they need to receive treatment for a mental disease or learn new information.
Children love music and recognize it very early in life. Mothers singing lullabies to her newborn baby, toddlers banging on a pot in the kitchen, preschoolers singing their favorite nursery rhyme, music is an important part of a child’s life. Music does many things, it can bring back a memory or a feeling, it can sooth and relax, and it teaches. Music also teaches children; Language, listening skills, and communication to name a few of the concepts children learn through music. "Scientists are confirming what teachers have long suspected: Music not only touches people's souls, it also shapes growing minds. When children sing or play music they become better readers, thinkers and learners. The more we discover about how the brain works, the more we recognize how crucial music is to children's learning." When I started on this paper I figured all the information I would find out is knowledge I would already know of on this subject, but then I actually found out more new information than I already knew. One day in late November Hayden and I were joking around with Evan and he said a very interesting thing that I will never have guessed he would ever say again. He said, “I just got out of the hospital” we asked why and he said, “Because of my depression.” I never knew even had struggled with depression until he told us he did. So I had to find out if the over use of video games led to his depression. The first question I asked him was when did you first start playing video games, and he answered, “I started playing video games when I was in kindergarten it was on my Nintendo 64 playing Frogger. I asked him besides sleeping and at school at what percentage do you play video games he replied, “65%.” I also went on to ask him if he knew that playing to many video games leads to aggression and depression and if he thought this is why he has been diagnosed with depression. He answered yes to both of these questions. Because of this story it made me think, does certain toys create problems in a child’s future development?
According to NAEYC “We learn so much when we listen to music. Music inspires creative movement. It calms at rest time. It fosters listening skills. Through music children can learn about patterns. Through singing children learn rhymes and new vocabulary.” (NAEYC)
Music is the art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous melody, harmony, rhythm and timbre (American Heritage). Music is important for children due to it helps develop a child’s language skills, self-esteem, listening skills, math skills and brain connections. By using different instruments we as teachers and parents are helping our children to grow and become more active, also helps them with rhythm and develop motor coordination. Early childhood is also the time when children learn about their world, primarily through the magical process of play. The substance of play in young children is usually comprised of the environmental objects and experiences to which they have been exposed (Importance of Music).
Playing a musical instrument as a hobby, boost the memory. It makes use of both parts of the brain, thus boosts memory power. Research shows that playing a musical instrument at an early age can improve learning ability and memory by arousing different patterns of the brain development. It is also linked to higher IQ levels and physical growth of certain parts of brain. Many people lose touch with their creative side. Playing a musical instrument as a hobby can foster that creativity, especially when you reach advanced levels.
