Denying same-sex couples the right to marry causes gay and lesbian families to appear as second class citizens and sends the message that it is acceptable to discriminate against them. For the longest time civil rights has been a battle of right and wrong, affecting the lives of many people around the world. Discrimination against gays denies them their civil rights with regards to their social roles in marriage work, and everyday life.

As of now, 17 states in North America have licensed and legalized same-sex marriage. The LGBT community has been fighting for marital freedom for a few generations now. Those opposing same-sex marriage are afraid they will lose their established pride as Americans. Although society looks down upon homosexuality, that hasn’t stopped gays from continuing to push for their rights as citizens of the state. But what seems like a never ending battle has now become a turning point for America and decisions to change have kicked into high gear.
