Discrimination Against Latin and Hispanic Immigrants What would it be like to wake up everyday knowing you would get bullied, mistreated, and/or abused just because of where you were born? Discrimination still exists! “Discrimination remains and there is an increase in hate crimes against Hispanics, Latinos and Mexican-Americans, as one of the perceived symbols of that discrimination, the U.S.-Mexico Border Fence, nears completion. Instead of pulling together in these difficult times, we may see a greater polarization of attitudes” (Gibson). But why are hate crimes increasing towards Latin and Hispanic aliens and what types of discrimination are occurring against them? Understanding violence towards the Hispanic and Latin alien is divided into three main classes; the difference between legal and illegal aliens, the attacks and effects, and the point of view of different people towards aliens. “Immigration is the term utilized to describe the action and process by which a citizen of one country relocates to another country after petitioning for residency into that country.” (Martinez). An immigrant, also known as an alien, is person or people who come from a foreign country. Aliens are broken down into two main categories: the legal aliens and the illegal aliens. But what are the differences between the two? Legal aliens owe allegiance to the country. In America, aliens have the opportunity of becoming legal by either having a green card or becoming an American citizen and having dual citizenship. Green cards holders are permanent residents who have been authorized to live and work in the U.S. legally but they are not American citizens. Hispanics fight back commenting on how they “take jobs Americans don’t want”. Hispanics say they come here to have a better life for their family and themselves and a job. Americans say Hispanics are criminals, drug dealers, etc. and should stay in their country. Yes, it is true Hispanics are usually in gangs; go to jail, do drugs etc. But Hispanics say they start doing those types of things because they don’t have money to take care of their family, so usually they will do anything for their kids to have a good life. The different POV arguments are endless. Discrimination still exists in our world. People getting mistreated, bullied, abused, etc. because from where they are born is a serious matter that needs to be change. The characteristics and personality is what people are supposed to see in a person, not their appearance.
Many American residents/citizens argue that the illegal immigrants are here to take American jobs, but the jobs that the illegal worker is often doing are jobs that most Americans will not be willing to take because they do not receive good pay, they do not receive any benefits, and because the jobs are often long hour shifts. In my opinion, we should say either immigrant or nothing at all. The term immigrant is coming from your country to another country. We always label certain groups and things. We have labels in genres, ethnicity and etc. There are exceptions to those words because they are generally and majority accepted. Using the term illegal immigrant or even illegal alien makes it as if they’re not human. Now, if we have to use a word to label or name, it should be immigrant Even though I’m labeling also, it’s a euphemism. The reason why I would say immigrant is because they are immigrating which makes them an immigrant.
Illegal Immigration is “the migration of people across national borders, or the residence of foreign nationals in a country, in a way that violates the immigration laws of the destination country.” (Google). Illegal immigrants are people that cross into boarders illegally. For immigrants trying to come to America, most of them resort to trying to cross the border illegally. They risk getting caught, bad conditions, and some even risk going through the Sonoran Desert. There is no boarder control around, so that means they have a small chance of getting caught. However, the trip is very dangerous. “The most deadly crossing is between Sasabe, Mexico, and Three Points, Arizona. The trip is 45 miles. There is no water here. Temperatures can reach 112 degrees or more.” Many illegal immigrants endure these harsh conditions just for a chance at freedom. So they can experience the “American Dream”. However, most of them will not make it into America. And if they do not make it into America then they will get deported back to their home country. On the other hand, if they do make it into America, then they will have to constantly live in hiding, and accept jobs that regular United States citizens will not take for little pay. That is just the beginning to what illegal immigrants have to go through. They withstand harsh treatment, discrimination, and laws that prevent them from becoming a citizen.
Immigration is the movement into a destination country to which they are not native nor possess its citizenship in order to settle or reside there, especially as permanent residents or naturalized citizens, or to take up employment as a migrant worker or temporarily as a foreign worker. English immigrants were the first who left their home countries in hope of improving their lives, taking the first very important step towards a completely new culture. They had to establish an entirely new nation, on land that was inhabited by Native Americans.
During this course, this author has been taught about various social issues in today’s society as a whole. Some of these issues include perception of race and culture, poverty, social inequality, urbanization, and more. After exploring all these issues and more, this author has chosen to finish his last assignment on racial discrimination and Hispanic Americans. This author decided upon this specific issue because he has observed this in almost every town or city he has visited as a truck driver. This author thinks it is unfortunate that minorities are still treated unfairly. As citizens of the United States of America, it is useful to become educated on what racial discrimination is and see how it is applied in everyday life. This author decided to investigate this issue and determined the genuineness and voluminous of it.

The topic in hand is the unfairness toward illegal immigrants in the United States and the lack of acknowledgement to their contribution to the country. This topic has constantly arised when immigration reforms are being discussed, most states speak negatively of immigrants; how they take American jobs, infiltrate the welfare, do not pay taxes, etc. When on the contraire they are the ones negatively being affected due to the necessity of a social security number. Latinos face a lot of discrimination when they come to the united stated or they try to assimilate to the American culture. Most immigrants have to deal with the police investigating them because they think they are all drug dealers or are in some type of illegal organization. They also have to deal with people calling them names because of their skin color. Americans also accuse Hispanics of stealing their jobs (Ramos, 53). They also face seeing racist graffiti on homes or wall of a building and they have to face hate crimes (Plunkett, 15). They sometimes get excluded from white communities (Plunkett, 39). Latinos are also blamed for serious problems the country faces (Ramos, 195). There are reasons for Americans to discriminate Latinos and reasons why they shouldn’t discriminate them.

We shouldn 't let our judgement about a person cloud the way they are as person. We shouldn 't let stereotypes define a person work ethic and how we choose a person to be our husband/wife.
