In today’s society many people believe spanking children and physically punishing them is a good way to discipline. I believe there are many more effective ways to discipline a child.
Why do people spank their children? People believe spanking causes pain and fear that you learn from. For example if I was running by a pool and the ground was wet and I happened to slip and fall, I would get hurt and I would be afraid to fall again, so I would learn to be more cautious and walk the second time I went by. With spankings children learn through that fear and pain to no longer repeat the certain action. Spanking can also let the child know the difference between good and bad. Knowing the difference can help them become better people by being able to make better decisions in life. The Bible also states that spanking is a necessary procedure for the proper development of a child. If the Bible says it is okay, then it must be right, is that correct?
In my opinion it is never okay to spank a child. It is not acceptable for a fully grown adult to use painful physical force against ...
The issue of spanking is whether it is justifiable or an act of child abuse. Some child specialists, such as Christine Walsh and Michael Boyle, argue that if a parent must administer a spanking, it should not be through anger and only as a last option when other forms of discipline have been deemed unsuccessful. They say that for a spanking to be instructive it must be...
Children are abused, in part, because they are unable to defend themselves against stronger and more powerful adults (Barnett, Miller-Perrin, Perrin 61). Researchers only recently have recognized that spanking is used primarily with young children and that the incidence and severity of spanking often diminishes by the time children are 8-10 years of age (Day 80).
Spanking is commonly associated with parents attempting to correct behavior in a child; ultimately often out of frustration and/or anger with the child’s behavior. In the heat of the moment, most parents do not associate the long term psychosocial or behavioral effects the act of spanking can have on a child. The dangers of these effects derived from how children think and behave show us that spanking is not an effective form of discipline.
Many authorities and psychologists believe that spanking breaks a child's spirit and only leads to violence. They think that it causes the child to become depressed, angry or hostile and they have conducted many studies to prove these things. This type of harsh punishment occurs often, but it is called child abuse. There is a great difference between abusing a child and properly disciplining a child. "One is an act of love; the other is an act of hostility, and they are as different as night and day" (Dobson 35).
The use of this form of punishment of spanking has been used for the longest time. Many parents have this form of punishment towards their children to help control their child in some cases. Like in the article “Spanking” by John A Addleman he adds to this argument of how there are many parents who strongly follow this form of punishment for their children. He added that there are parents who also believe that this form of corporal punishment is not abuse “ data regarding attitudes about spanking, have found that most parents believe that corporal punishment is a non abusive manner is an acceptable form of discipline” (Addleman 1). Many may ask what kind of corporal punishment exactly is acceptable to use towards your child. The form of punishment
Spankings are usually given by a parent, legal guardian, teacher, or other person in authority over a minor. Generally, spankings are given when a child displays unacceptable behavior such as being rude, foul language, stealing, fighting, and other acts of disobedience. Wikipedia states that in most societies, “parents are regarded as those having the duty of disciplining their children and the right to spank them is appropriate” even though this is changing in many countries. There are government agencies, laws, and policies in place for most states that outline the proper way to utilize corporal punishment. When these laws are followed, children should be safe in most circumstances when they are corrected with corporal punishments. There will always be a risk of child abuse because of the way some people in today’s society don’t value life but I don’t bel...
...re the parents and I think that the decision should be left up to us on how “we” should discipline our children. “The key to effective child discipline is the implementation of immediate, powerful, and consistent consequences. A spanking can serve as a meaningful negative consequence in cases of undesirable behavior, but it tends to be most useful – and necessary – when a child is under 3 ½ years of age. Generally speaking, it’s our view that corporal punishment should be applied only in cases of willful disobedience or defiance of authority.”
Many people don’t know exactly what child abuse is. Child abuse is physical maltreatment or sexual molestation of a child. Child abuse consists of three categories, physical, emotional, sexual and neglect. Some Americans even view spanking unacceptable act and others see it as an appropriate form of discipline. Well, spanking varies on a thin line. If you leave a mark and/ or aggravated and take it out on the child, that is considered abuse. When you spank after the child misbehaves and doesn’t leave a mark it isn’t abuse. Some facts about child abuse are that approximately 5 children die every day because of child abuse, most children become victims of abuse and neglect at 18 months or younger, and 14 percent of all men and 36 percent of all women in prison were abused as children. Children of all sorts of ages and races that get abused every day; some children have disorders and long term effects and sometimes these children die. Then some of these children will never feel safe in their lifetime because they know the one who abuse them are somewhere out there.
Spanking, a supposed form of child abuse, is the best way to discipline a child who has behaved against guidelines previously discussed by parents, and does not harm a child in the grand scheme of life. Spanking a child will result in the betterment of a child’s behavior, the lessening chance of the child developing a behavioral disorder, and the assurance that the child will blossom into a well-developed and responsible adult.
Spanking a child is not against the law in most places. However, parents who use it in their homes are being accused of child abuse. The Chicago Tribune published an article that urged readers to report child abuse when they become aware of it. In the article “Child abuse in plain View” the author describes spanking as a type of abuse that happens behind closed doors (“Child abuse in plain View”). Like most critics of corporal punishment, the author is trying to link spanking to abuse. The author`s concern about abuse is a valid one. Abuse should be reported immediately. However, any attempt to define spanking as abuse is wrong. Spanking a child is not abuse. It is an effective way of discipline that helps guide the child into becoming a respectful and responsible person.
The misconception about spanking has resulted in a lack of discipline in America causing a decline in society. The Bible and many other doctors and researchers are clear about the correct way to discipline children. When proper discipline is implemented, children are prepared for life. Spanking, like anything else, is only effective when performed properly. As long as it comes out of a heart of love, it will bear good fruit. Parents, try spanking your child the next time it’s needed; not hastily or angry, but out of love.
There is always a heated debate behind the question “Is it ok to spank a disobedient child?” or if it should even be allowed. Based on the research I have completed I believe that it is completely ok to discipline by spanking. Spanking in not a form of child abuse like many people sat but instead it is a punitive redirection when verbal redirection will not suffice. As a child I was defiant, not in a despicable way, I just liked to do things my own way and be independent as a result of this personality trait I received many verbal redirections and spankings before my mother became abusive not just physically but verbally as well, however, the abuse was not because of the spankings but were because of her personality traits of manipulation and
Because the beliefs, education and cultures of people vary so much, along with the age of the child, methods of child discipline vary widely. The topic of child discipline involves a wide range of fields such as parenting, behavioural analysis, developmental psychology, social work and various religious perspectives. Advances in the understanding of parenting have provided a background of theoretical understanding and practical understanding of the effectiveness of parenting methods.
Spanking is a disciplinary act that has been used by parents for years now. It does not seem like a big deal at the time, but spanking does have long term effects that can affect the child even when he or she is a adult. Spanking whether it is appropriate for parents or any guardian of a child should be allowed to spank their child or not. There is a lot of controversy because parents say kids need to be disciplined when they are behaving badly. Others say parents shouldn 't spank their child because they long-term outcome is worse and they are not teaching the child a lesson. Some parents agree with these specialist and don 't spank their child but use other ways of discipline that doesn 't involve hurting
Some people believe spanking a child is child abuse, and that it causes the child to grow up aggressive and violent. This would mean that every child that is spanked during their developmental stages will grow up to be an example of bad behavior. However, there is no actual data or information that can confirm that spanking a child will cause a child to grow up to be violent or too aggressive. Children have been trained to obey rules or a set code of behavior for centuries. It is the best way to mold a child to be a respectable adult, and they can pass on the behavior to their future children. It may not always happen, but its pretty effective.
