The way in which the majority of the world now communicates is through Social
Network Sites which is very common in today’s society. Over the past ten years
Facebook has grown to be the number one social network site utilized in the world. The
purpose of this research is to educate parents on the dangers it can bring to
adolescents. The primary audience will be parents of adolescent children. This research
will explore the disadvantages of adolescent communication on Facebook media.
Focusing on Cyberbullying, Sexting, and Facebook Depression, looking at how this
behavior can have a negative impact on them.
Cyberbullying
Traditional adolescent bullying in the 70’s and 80’s of threats to do bodily harm to
another adolescent either before school, after school, on the playground, or even in
locker rooms have become somewhat a thing of the past. With todays advanced
technology such as cell phones, and Social Network Sites you now have what is called
Cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is any behavior performed through electronic or digital
media by individuals or groups that repeatedly communicates hostile or aggressive
messages intended to inflict harm or discomfort on others (Tokunaga 2010).
This new trend of harassment amongst adolescents has become more
and more prevalent than ever before. Any adolescent ranging from the age of 13 to 18
can obtain a profile on Facebook.
Facebook media which is the number one social network site in the entire world has

The severe consequences of sexting or posting sexually explicit photos online can be psychologically damaging (ex. emotional trauma to the subject of the photo), especially if the distribution of the photo ends up in the wrong hands, or to an unintended audience. In 2010 Facebook generated $3.7 billion in revenue. Facebook has earned the title of being the first website to obtain 1 trillion page views in a month. Users are estimated to project 2.7 billion likes and comments every day, in the first three months of 2011.
Most adolescents in today’s society are faced with a whole new set of risks and dangers compared to previous generations. It can almost be said that there is no safe place for teenagers these days between all of the new technology and society as a whole. There is a very broad range of dangers and risks that adolescents can engage in and most of the time, if an adolescent engages in one then he or she will engage in other ones as well. According to the text book, the five main adolescent risk behaviors are “antisocial behavior, cigarette smoking, drug misuse, alcohol misuse, and sexual behavior that risk pregnancy or disease”.

Sexting can be referred to as sexual content communicated through text messages, smart phones, or visual and web 2.0 activities such as social networking sites. It has been defined as the ‘exchange of sexual messages or images’ (Livingstone et al., 2011) and ‘the creating, sharing and forwarding of sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images’ (Lenhart, 2009) through mobile phones and/or the internet. There are many factors associated with sexting. This includes that fact that it is coercive, this means that sexting does not refer to a single activity but rather to a range of activities which may be motivated by sexual pleasure but are often linked to harassment, bullying and even violence. Statistics show that 20% of anorexic teenagers will die prematurely, and 80% of teenagers who commit suicide are depressed (South). Social media has glorified and brought to attention eating disorders, depression, and suicide among teens that might otherwise not become a statistic in these critical categories.
In this day and age, many individuals simply cannot go without some sort of socialization. Specifically speaking, most participate in online social networking sites. The most popular and used one is commonly known as Facebook. Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. By 2007, Facebook had over 21 million users, adding up to 1.6 billion page views every single day. The typical user spends over twenty minutes per day on Facebook and two thirds of the users log in every day at least once. It is not questionable as to why many people have a Facebook account. Facebook is generally efficient, easy for socialization, and not difficult to manage. Most organizations are affiliated with Facebook, as “almost 22,000 organizations had Facebook directories,” as of November 2006. A year after that in 2007, Facebook was named the seventh most popular website (Ellison 1). However, with anything well known, many oppose to using Facebook and hold criticism against the popular network. There are many flaws in the website and the relationships it starts online. Facebook is risking dangerous activities, ignoring privacy laws, and demeaning healthy socialization.
