Introductory
In the late 30’s and early 40’s, something drastic was happening in Nazi Germany and German annexed areas. People were killed in Germany and German annexed territories (Friedlander). In the summer of 1939, Nazi officials began to exterminate disabled children and the handicapped (Friedlander). This killings began as a cleansing plan from Hitler and his high ranking SS officers. The experimentation and lack of public reaction to the T-4 program paved the road to the mass killings / genocide known as the Holocaust beginning with the handicapped.
Background
The T4 Program was a way that Hitler wanted to clean his race. Euthanasia literally means “good death” and it was the first attempt to clean the population (Friedlander). Hitler wanted racial purity and a strong national health which led to the killings (American Israeli Cooperative Enterprise). The T4 Program ended up killing about over a quarter million disabled people through its years (Hitler’s Rehearsal). Around 5,000 children perished from the world in the war years of 1939-45 (Friedlander). The T4 program also was a beginning phase of the Holocaust because Hitler and his Nazi party wanted to rid the country and German annexed areas of mentally and physically handicapped.

The topic of the T4’s carnage impacts us today by showing us that we need to hold our ground when someone is picking on someone with special needs. Both T4 Program and the Holocaust teaches us that whenever anyone needs help from an opposition, we need to be there to help them fend for themselves. The Holocaust must never be forgotten because it shows us how a simple man can be persuaded by a literate speaker like Hitler; as well as the fact that one must not be persecuted by their peers because one event may lead to another and your impact on their belief could be affected; also for the memory of the victims the Holocaust and T4 Program took. Anti- Semitism and the Persecution of the Jewish population of Europe became more common during the Nazi rise in power in the early 1900’s. In 1920 the Nazis published their party program, consisting of 25 points. For example point four reads “Only those who are our fellow countrymen can become citizens. Only those who have German blood, regardless of creed, can be our countrymen. Hence no Jew can be a countryman.” The Nazis goal was to create a master race throughout Europe called the “Aryan Race” or the Germanic race. To fulfil this plan of a “master race” the Nazis declared that they intended to segregate groups that the party viewed as a danger and inferior to society. These groups included European Jews, Gypsies, those who were handicapped (both mentally and physically) and those who were deaf and blind. The holocaust was a horrible time in Germany where millions of people were killed simply for not being Aryan. The group responsible for this was called the Nazis led by a man of the name Adolf Hitler. Hitler’s main target was the Jews, in fact the Nazis were responsible for the killing of 6 million Jews, which is known as one of the largest genocides ever. The way this was done was by taking the Jews to places called concentration camps where they would be kept, tortured and eventually killed by being put into gas chambers. The conditions of these camps were horrible. People had to sleep on top of each other and minimal food was supplied. The results of this was that people died by just being there because they caught a disease. Not only were the conditions bad but people were tortured, beaten and starved. The Nazis put a whole new meaning to the word cruelty. One of the cruelest things the Nazis did was use the Jews for experiments, where people were basically test dummies for Dr. Mengele, who was the head Nazi doctor and referred to as the “angel of death.”
As early as age thirteen, we start learning about the Holocaust in classrooms and in textbooks. We learn that in the 1940s, the German Nazi party (led by Adolph Hitler) intentionally performed a mass genocide in order to try to breed a perfect population of human beings. Jews were the first peoples to be put into ghettos and eventually sent by train to concentration camps like Auschwitz and Buchenwald. At these places, each person was separated from their families and given a number. In essence, these people were no longer people at all; they were machines. An estimation of six million deaths resulting from the Holocaust has been recorded and is mourned by descendants of these people every day. There are, however, some individuals who claim that this horrific event never took place.
The Holocaust was a time in history that was brutal, sickening, and ruthless. The Holocaust refers to, “The systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of approximately six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators.” (ushmm.org) The Nazi’s came to rule in January of 1933 in Germany. They supposed that the German’s were “ethnically greater” and the Jews considered “mediocre” were a threat and problem to the German society. The German’s did not only target the Jews, they targeted Gypsies, Slavic people, Russians, the disabled, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, etc. If those people were captured but not killed yet, they were sent away to concentration camps. Concentration camps were introduced as harsh, uncleanness living camps and a very important feature of the regime. The Nazis targeted certain groups of individuals including Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, mentally or physically disabled, and anyone who did not agree with Nazi Party. The Nazi Party had excessive power, which was used to undermine the others below them. Out of all of the individuals who were targeted by the Nazis; the Jewish were the most discriminated against. Six million out of the eleven million executed were Jews. The journey of the Jews through a span of only fifteen years showed how one event in history could be so crucial. Jewish individuals’ lives took a toll for the worse as the Nazis rose to power.

Taking as much as a simple action can really help prevent the future genocide, also it can help save so many lives. You don’t have to do anything big or dangerous but to take small courage and spread out the words, to teach others about the Holocaust is the simplest thing you can do and it gives affection to the world. The Holocaust is an overpowering example of this terrifying genocide and persecution and in the memory of the Jews; the memory of its horror must encourage our younger generations to engage against such heinous crimes today and in the future.
The Nazi’s perpetrated many horrors during the Holocaust. They enacted many cruel laws. They brainwashed millions into foolishly following them and believing their every word using deceitful propaganda tactics. They forced many to suffer doing embarrassing jobs and to live in crowded ghettos. They created mobile killing squads to exterminate their enemies. Finally, as part of “The Final Solution to the Jewish Question”, they made concentration and killing camps. Another thing the Nazi’s did was to use eugenics as another mean to micromanage the population. What is eugenics, you might ask? It’s the field of scientific study or the belief in genetically improving qualities, attributes and traits in the human race and/or improving the species as a whole—usually done by controlled/selective breeding. Those with positive, desirable, and superior traits are encouraged to reproduce and may be given monetary incentives by the government to have large families. Those with negative, undesirable, or inferior traits may be discouraged from having offspring. They may be sterilized, or undergo dangerous medical procedures or operations with high mortality rates. I chose this topic because it appealed to me and seemed interesting. In the following paragraphs, the tactics, methods, and propaganda the Nazi’s used will be exposed.

During the rule of Adolf Hitler, many children who were Jewish lived a very frightening and difficult life. They never were given the love and compassion that every child needs and deserves growing up. The Holocaust is a story that will continue to be shared till the end of time.
The first thought that crosses the mind of an able-bodied individual upon seeing a disabled person will undoubtedly pertain to their disability. This is for the most part because that is the first thing that a person would notice, as it could be perceived from a distance. However, due to the way that disability is portrayed in the media, and in our minds, your analysis of a disabled person rarely proceeds beyond that initial observation. This is the underlying problem behind why disabled people feel so under appreciated and discriminated against.
