Digital Savvy Equals Excessive Use of Technology
As a relatively affluent and highly educated group of minorities, it is not surprising that Asian Americans are heavy influencers in the digital and media spaces. Since many Asians actually came from countries with higher penetration of digital technology, they are very fond of using the latest and greatest gadgets on the market. According to a report that was published by the Nielsen Company in 2012, Asian Americans are “digital pioneers”, who adopt technology earlier and faster than any other minority group, and have “higher rates of smartphone use, online video consumption and Internet connectivity” (Nielsen, 2012). As a result, it is very common to find almost everyone in Asian American households using multiple electronic devices throughout their days, even their young children.
With over 80 percent of Asian Americans living in a household with high-speed Internet access, they “lead in mobile device ownership” and usage, and “time spent online” (Nielsen, 2012). While television is still the dominant entertainment medium, Asian Americans spend an average of 12 hours and 23 minutes a month watching videos on the internet, which is twice as much as the general population (Nielsen, 2012). Sadly enough, many of those who own a smartphone and a tablet use both simultaneously while watching TV. In addition, online shopping has become an addition among Asian women, which helps explain why Asian Americans also lead the way when it comes to e-commerce purchases, at 77 percent (Dawson, 2013). Among those 117 surveys submitted, all of them were considered as valid data because I had made all of the questions I needed required. As a result, the sample data for this analysis was based on all 117 completed surveys received.
Demographics
As mentioned above, the first portion of the survey inquired about the respondents’ demographic information. First, in terms of Asian origin, majority of the respondents were Chinese and Vietnamese. Most likely, these results were influenced by the proportion of my circle of friends, co-workers and families with those origins. According to the United States Census Bureau, the three largest Asian groups in the United States are Chinese, Filipinos, and Asian Indians, followed by Vietnamese, Koreans and Japanese (CDC, 013).
