I-Search
My topic is Heinz Ketchup. As some of you may know I have a strong connection to Pittsburgh. During my most recent trip to Pittsburgh I realized that I didn’t know much about Pittsburgh besides sports. I thought a great way to learn more about Pittsburgh would be to do a Pittsburgh related I-Search project. Initially I was going to write a paper and title it The History of Pittsburgh, but people told me that it was a bad idea and that it would be 700 pages if I wrote it thoroughly. Then I decided to do my report on the industries of Pittsburgh, and since Mrs. Bisson thought Ketchup would be the most interesting I decided to do my I-Search on ketchup.
Each time I drive through Pittsburgh on my way to my grandma’s house in White Oak, Pennsylvania I pass huge brick buildings with tall smokestacks and wonder why they are there and what is going on inside of the brick buildings. Some are steel mills and some are part of the Heinz headquarters in Pittsburgh. I think that doing my I-Search on a topic that relates to those buildings can give me a better understanding of all the things I’ve wondered about Pittsburgh.
I arrived at my final question by modifying my original question. Which I got to by combining my interest on the industries of Pittsburgh in relation to Pittsburgh and my teacher’s opinion on which industry she thought would be the most interesting (HJ Heinz Company). My original question was, “What is HJ Heinz Company’s impact on Pittsburgh?” Then I tweaked it so that it focused on the history of Heinz a little more. My dad yelled at me for picking that topic and it felt like I would never get that done, but by devoting long days to I-Search I got my report into good shape. My current question is “What is...

I am from a small town called Bristol Borough, Pennsylvania. It is along the Delaware River, about 25 miles northeast of Philadelphia. Bristol Borough was founded in 1681. This is the states third oldest borough, that was once a busy river port with important shipbuilding activities (Cohen 438). It is predominately residential, with the exception of Mill Street, the community's traditional commercial street. It includes fine examples of many major styles and idioms, reflecting the community's long history and its importance as a transportation and commercial center (Owen 133). The 28-acre Bristol Industrial Historic District includes the original town of Bristol and the residential area that extends northeast along the bank of the Delaware River (Owen 132). The Bristol Industrial Historic District is a significant collection of the factory and mill complexes containing elements dating from 1875-1937 (Owen 133). Among the mills is the Grundy Mill Complex. It is a visual representation of industrial growth of Bristol Borough. This mill was run by Joseph R. Grundy. The dramatic scale of later buildings stand as the source and monument to the wealth and power of Joseph Grundy (Owen 145). Joseph Grundy was the proprietor of the Bristol Worsted Mills, and one of the most prominent manufacturers and businessmen of Bucks County (Green 252). The Bristol Worsted Mills no longer run but the building is still standing. Bristol owes a lot to Joseph R. Grundy for his contributions to the people and the town itself.
The 1920's were a time for a change in New Jersey. Its location made it a prominent part of the country with some of the greatest manufactures coming through the Garden State. Very much like the rest of The United States, New Jersey began the 1920's in a state of prosperity. This was a time for population and employment increase. After the War was over factory production greatly decreased but the production lines remained in somewhat high production. The 1920's brought on a completely new era of transportation and movement of goods and people. For the City of Elizabeth NJ, the 1920's brought on an era of manufacturing of goods that would help the city develop for years to come. For one, cars became easily affordable and readily available for most common people. This was also the time for Mass Production; the steel, petroleum, and glass industries all grew with the growth of the automobile industry. In Elizabeth NJ, there was a particular manufacturing focal point. The site of the first Duesenberg engine production Factory, located on Newark Avenue, was the beginning of this manufacturing era. This growth followed the path of most trends in the United States and eventually fell to a slow but sure decline; the years following the great "Roaring Twenties" brought by a time of devastation and economic suffering to the residents of Elizabeth NJ. There are various factors leading to the decline of the manufacturing era, prime among them, Environmental regulations.

For my book report I chose the book Business Builders in Fast Foods by Nathan Aaseng. This book is about the growth of the fast food industry and individual fast food restaurants. The first chapter was a introduction over the food industry and the rest of the chapters were over the begining of fast food restaurants including: Harvey’s House, White Castle, Dairy Queen, McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Domino’s and their creators.
Every culture left a mark of its quality on New York’s buildings that change over time: some are old, some are new, some are tall, and some are small. They might have a lot in common, but not one building is like the other. Diversity is what makes New York.
IV. Fourth and last I will talk about the eighties on through today, and how this industry morphed into what it is today.
My focus of inquiry is gender roles. I chose gender roles as my focus of inquiry because there are multiple differences and similarities in the expectations of women and men then and now. The comparisons between the roles of each gender was enlightening. It made me want to know more, like how, when ,and why they changed if they did, or if they stayed the same what was there significance. This topic seemed to be interesting because these roles are something men and women everywhere experience in everyday life, but in each place around the world they could be different.
Justify your research question and explain why this topic has been chosen. Why is it significant and worthy of a discussion?
The topic I chose to write about is “The Abortion Controversy” because it is a complex issue. It is a debate between people who see abortion as a moral issue (pro-life) and those who value a woman’s right to choose what to do with her own body (pro-choice). The debate between these two groups has been going on for decades.
I chose the topic of transgenderism. Transgender is when an individual tries to switch genders. Transgender comes from the Latin words trans, meaning “across.” Transgender literally means “across gender.” Many trans-individuals decided later on in their lives that they want to switch genders, and other people argue that they were born the wrong gender. Trans-people experience many difficulties throughout their lives. Switching genders makes their lives more challenging, because of many reasons. Their lives are more challenging because of their religion, whether or not they are accepted. The military is very strict, and will not accept trans individuals whatsoever. Insurance companies sometimes will not accept them as well. Trans people are not always accepted by certain occupations. Growing up in schools, trans people are all treated differently regarding to which bathroom/locker room to use. There is a huge debate whether or not trans students are even allowed to participate on sports teams, and if they are, which team to be on. Other obstacles such as birth certificates, passports, and driver’s licenses are all major issues as well. Trans people have to decide if they are willing to come forward, and say ‘This is who I am.’ But before trans-people can come out to other, they must come out to
The topic I have chosen to write about is the filibuster. The filibuster is a very important and unique issue in American government. The filibuster is used in the Senate to slow up or derail bills. It is also used to block judicial nominees, threatened most recently to be used against Judge Alito. It is a very strong tool especially to the minority party. The minority can use it to make a point or to try and get their way. The filibuster may be very upsetting to the majority party but will be very important to them when they one day become the minority party.
McCullough explains how Johnstown became an example of ‘The Gilded Age’ industrialization prior to the 1889 disaster. The canal made Johnstown the busiest place in Cambria County in the 1820s. By the 1850s the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Cambria Iron Company began, and the population increased. There were about 30,000 people in the area before the flood. The Western Reservoir was built in the 1840s, but became generally known as the South Fork dam. It was designed to supply extra water for the Main Line canal from Johnstown to Pittsburgh. By saving the spring floods, water could be released during the dry summers. When the dam was completed in 1852, the Pennsylvania Railroad completed the track from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, and the canal business began its decline. The state offered to sell the canal, the railroad company bought it for the right of ways yet had no need to maintain the dam, which due to neglect, broke for the first time in 1862. McCullough stresses that man was responsible for the...
write about for the topic. It is all right to change the subject many times if I absolutely have to.
Undoubtedly work and place influence its surroundings. Youngstown, Ohio is emphasized as one in particular. As a result “steelmaking fueled the area’s economy and defined its identity” (68). The city was represented in newspapers, art work, postcards, and many texts as both “impressive and attractive” (75), as well as “imposing, confusing, and uninviting” (86). Considering the conflicting representations, steelmaking “also suggest(s) a key element of conflict in the community” that it was so clearly creating an identity for (69).
huge global problem, caused by human waste, but which can be solved by going green and reducing human impact on the environment. CONCLUDING PURPOSE (restates specific purpose, reinforce relevance of topic to audience): We should all learn to adopt environmentally-friendly alternatives to help improve the environment and the world. It is a worthwhile effort that will benefit you, the environment, and the future. We are at fault because the cars we drive, and many other conveniences we use, contribute to this pollution.
