Marketing: Differences Between B2B and B2C
Marketing allows organizations to promote their products or services with the intent of maximizing their profit and gaining consumers' confidence. In today's society marketing the correct product/service can be difficult but implementing the marketing process and planning accurately can alleviate potential obstacles. This week's paper will discuss the meaning of marketing, define business to business (B2B), define business to consumer (B2C), and compare how marketing differs between B2B/B2C websites.

According to Warholic, "marketing a B2B/B2C website requires a performance evaluation, understanding the business being marketed, identifying the customer base, incorporating pertinent content with the keywords properly included, updating the content regularly, establishing trust with customers, and understanding the marketing channels available" (Warholic, 2006, para 1). "Most people think that marketing is only about advertising and/or personal selling of goods and services. Advertising and selling, however, are just two of the many marketing activities" (Boone & Kurtz, 1998, para. 1). Marketing consist of four elements that assist with developing the market mix: product, which is the physical item or service that a company is selling, place is where and how a product is distributed and sold, promotion explains the advertising/selling part of marketing the product/service, and price defines how much the consumer will pay for the product/service.
Companies doing business on the Web must be certain of their ability to manage the liabilities that can emerge as a result of today's online business environment. This environment includes laws and ethical factors that are sometimes different from those in the brick and mortar setting. The online environment often forms a network of customers who can have considerable levels of communication with each other. Online businesses that break the law or violate ethical standards, therefore, can face swift and harsh reactions from customers and other stakeholders who will quickly learn of the businesses' unscrupulous online behaviors. Online customers also have much more interactive and complex relationships with online businesses than they do with traditional companies. This is because Internet technologies enable companies to build Web sites that can be customized to meet the specific needs of their B2B or B2C customers (Schneider, 2004). Online businesses can use this property of the online environment to manage the legal and ethical requirements of both business and consumer clientele.

1.1 Explain the characteristics of different business markets The characteristics of different business markets are dependent upon what product or services an organization produces or provides and the type of buyer they want to attract. Business to business, businesses sell to each other e.g. accountants specializing in business accounts. Consumer markets; products and services are sold by businesses to consumers e.g. supermarkets etc. A service market is where a business sells its services directly to individual consumers for example hairdressers.
Marketing is that broad area of business activity that directs the flow of services provided by the carrier to the customer in order to satisfy customers’ needs and wants and to achieve company objectives. Marketing is more than selling: it involves a number of business activities, including forecasting, market research and analysis, product research and development, price setting, and promotion, including advertising. Marketing also involves the finance activities such as credit and collection that are associated with ticket sales. One of the best ways to describe marketing is: Marketing is managing profitable customer relationships. The goal is to attract fresh customers by promising greater value and to keep and grow current customers by delivering satisfaction. We further define marketing management as the art and science of selecting target markets and building profitable relationships with them. This is how the marketing strategy was formed in this submission.
In two distinct e-commerce business types, Business-to-business (B2B) and Business-to-Consumer (B2C), there are many differences in the way they operate. Specifically in marketing, differences include how the marketing is driven and the values of the strategies, the size of the target market and length of the sales cycle, and even the buying patterns of the target consumers. Each of these differences will be better defined and explained in the following paragraphs.
Although the goal of B2B marketing is to convert prospects into customers, the process is longer and more involved. A B2B company needs to focus on relationship building and communication using marketing activities that generate leads that can be nurtured during the sales cycle. B2B companies use marketing to educate various players in the target audience because the decision to purchase is usually a multi-step process involving more than one person. For example, the goal of an email campaign for B2B is to drive prospects to the web to learn about your products and services.

However, according to (Kotler & Keller, 2006) the formal definition of "marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communication, and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its shareholders"(Kotler & Keller, p.4). According to these definitions, marketing needs to cover customers' necessities and at the same time sell products to increase future revenues. However, marketing is more extensive than just selling a product. Moreover, marketing activities are all activities associated with identifying the particular wants and needs of a target market of customers, and then going about satisfying those customers better than the competitors. This involves doing market research on customers, analyzing their needs, and then making strategic decisions about product design, pricing, promotion and distribution.
Marketing is a vital component in the success of businesses. Smaller businesses rely on business advertising, expenses, knowing if the business is networking with the right people, or joining the best organisations which lead to success (EStartup business blog, 2010). According to Kotler (2012), Marketing is about identifying and meeting human social needs, thus it is not only about advertising and promotion it is more than this. It includes setting competitive price, communicating effectively with potential and existing customers and also introduction of new products.
In all reality, all businesses will, in some way shape or form, complete all of the marketing activities, even if completing these activities is not their main goal. (Dlabay 2006.) These marketing activities are product, place, price, and promotion. A business tool called that marketing mix takes all of these activities and puts them together in a way that can be used to help improve a business’s marketing strategy. Product is what the company is selling; Place is where the consumer will obtain this product; Price is what the consumer will pay for the product; Promotion is any type of communication that is intended to remind, inform, or persuade. (Dlabay 2006.) The marketing mix and the four P’s describe very well what business marketing is all about.
