Today, I am going to discuss the bestselling, fictional novel, The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. In her book, Annelise Marie – better known as Anne Frank, documents her experiences during the Holocaust and World War II (WWII). Readers are better able to get a feel for the suspense going on and emotion that Jews experienced, through a teenage mind. Anne Frank was only about 13 when she began writing about her book and 14 during hiding. She talks about the dangers of outside, bombings, shootings, and air raids of foreign enemies, as well as the “call ups” by Gestapo and the capture of her fellow acquaintances (including their experiences in the brutal concentration camps). The book is organized by diary dates and usually begin with “Dear Kitty,” From here I will summarize several sections of the book. Let us begin.

In the beginning of the book, you learn that Anne receives “Kitty” or her diary as a 13th birthday gift. From here, Anne begins writing by diary summaries. I will begin the summary here. Diary entries, from June 12, 1942 to Wednesday, June 24, 1942 describe Anne Frank’s personality, her life including her crushes/loves/”boyfriends”, and her family. At this point, you are familiar about how Anne thinks, what she believes, and how everyone interacts with her. She has mediocre grades in school but is confident she will advance to the next grade.

Diary entries, July 1, 1942 to July 10, 1942 talk about Anne’s crushes. You learn about her relationship with “Hello” and Peter Wessel. Hello is a 16-year-old boy who falls in love with Anne after walking her home daily. They talk with each other and grow potential feelings, although there are things that hold them back despite their love for each other....

...times can relate to her experiences as she grows into a inexperienced women. I would only recommend this book to teenagers and young adults. Some scenes are slightly graphic/inappropriate for younger readers like on Page 237 in the first paragraph were an describes her sexuality and even said she goes into “ecstasy” after viewing nude photos of the goddess Venus. She also discusses other personal matters including her menstruation, although despite this, I found that this was a good book and others should read it if they want to see how it was for a Jew during the Holocaust and a teenager during World War II.
