Needless Boundaries in Frost's Mending Wall
As long as man has existed, territories and boundaries have been a part of life. Everyone finds a need to have a part of this earth that he can call his own. As soon as one finds his own space, he begins to set boundaries sometimes in the form of walls or fences. This creation of a wall raises the question with the poet, Robert Frost, as to what they are “walling in or walling out.” In his poem “Mending Wall,” Frost as the narrator participates in the repairing of a wall that he finds little purpose in.

I was able to relate to when Jessie said that borders are symbols of the divisions we make of each other. These borders are made up by people to keep each other apart from one another. Whether it is for social, economic, or cultural reasons, the division remains. As Brooke pointed out, these borders prevent freedoms and deny opportunities.

For instance, if Oswald was supposed to be part of a conspiracy with the sole purpose to assassinate the President of the United States and his role was to take the shot, the conspirators would have provided him with a state-of-the-art gun instead of the inexpensive World War II vintage mail-order gun that was actually used. Mending Wall written by Robert Frost, describes the relationship between two neighbors and idea of maintaining barriers. Where one of them feels that there is no need of this wall, 'There where it is we do not need the wall: He is all pine and I am apple orchard.' On the other hand his neighbor remains unconvinced and follows inherited wisdom passed down to him by his father, 'Good fences make good neighbors.' They even kept the wall while mending it, this reflect that they never interact with each other, ?We keep the wall between us as we go?. The poem “Mending Wall” begins by the narrator telling is that there is a wall that is constantly being taken down by nature, and the narrator and his neighbor have to keep re-building it. But as the poem progresses, the narrator becomes unsure with himself, and begins to say that there is a wall “There where it is we do not need the wall” (23). He starts to question why a wall is there, knowing that he can never get across it to his neighbor. As the poem keeps progressing, he learns that the wall is there because of his neighbors tradition from his father, and he ends up saying “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall that wants it down (35), and he is talking about himself. In the progression of this poem, we see the narrator’s character change from someone who is persistent to someone who has hatred for what he is doing. He becomes more aware, having an epiphany, learning that there is truly no need for a wall, and it is only there because his neighbor is following his father’s tradition that requires him to keep the wall up. Through this characterization, we see that by only one side having hatred for the other, it can cause a division between them, because one person disagrees with the other. Throughout the entirety of “Goblin Market,” Christianity work its way into the story. At the beginning, the goblin men try to entice Laura and Lizzie into buying their abundance of fruit. In Christianity, a similar event occurred. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were forbidden by God to eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Despite being forbidden to eat from the tree, Satan tempted Eve to eat the fruit, and she and Adam both partook from the tree; they gave into temptation. Furthermore, the goblin men go into detail as to what kind of fruit they have; two types of fruit they offered were pomegranates and figs. Pomegranates are considered the suspect of being the original fruit in the Garden of Eden, but it is portrayed as an apple in art and media. Figs are also considered the fruit that Adam and Eve ate. Also, after eating the fruit from the tree, Adam and Eve used fig leaves to cover their naked bodies. Despite these Christian contexts, a sexual undertone can also be taken from the goblin men’s attempts to tempt Laura and Lizzie. Instead of literal fruit, the goblin men could be attempting to coerce Laura and Lizzie to engage in sexual acts with them (i.e. forbidden fruit).

Animal abuse is a nationwide issue due to multiple causes, but also has many proposed solutions. An abuser’s emotional state is an important cause of abuse. There are also external causes, such as a lack of humane law enforcement and an uncertainty for the status of animals in society. However, there are many resolutions being proposed as well—which, would stop the abuse cycle in multiple places. Animal abuse is a serious issue in the United States, with many prospective solutions.
