California’s central valley conjures images of lush, green landscapes; however, it has been plagued by drought for much of the past decade. While we may have only felt most of the effects of drought in our bank accounts with increasing water rates, the central valley has felt the effects in another way – the process of desertification. The process has caused major concern for many in the agricultural community but has moreover led to a widespread concern for much of the developing world.
Desertification is a global environmental problem that the textbook Principles of Environmental Science: Inquiry and Applications,written by William P. Cunningham and Mary Ann Cunningham, defines as the “process of conversion of once fertile land to desert” (140). This process occurs mainly in areas that are highly cultivated, overgrazed and also in areas where water resources are scarce. The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has determined that this process is most detrimental in “arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas” (United Nations).
The above mentioned areas that the UNCCD has determined are most concerning were “home to a third of the human population in 2000” and “occupy nearly half of the Earth’s land area” (GreenFacts). This means that roughly a third of the population is living in areas with degraded soils lacking nutrients or sufficient water supply. Some of these areas include surrounding parts of the Sahara Desert in Africa has well as much of China. The causes for desertification are the same throughout the world but may be more damaging in these areas. These causes include intensive agriculture, overgrazing of animals and lack of water resources.

...e should not consider it a local problem. To reiterate, this area has suffered from drought for much of the past decade. Water resources are becoming more scarce and cities and states are fighting over rights to the current water. California is a major producer of agricultural commodities that feed much of the world. If desertification is allowed to go unchecked in this area, we may one day be living in desert conditions.
Overall, desertification is a worldwide problem that needs all of our attention. Numerous cultures in mainly rural areas are being exposed to massive wind storms, deteriorating food quality and quality of life because of this environmental problem. There are a few organizations whose common goal is to stop and reverse desertification. In the end, I hope more people become educated about this topic and actively take steps to end its destruction.
The California water drought has been declared a crisis by the governor of California. 2013 was the driest year on record, and California could be running out of water. Californians should be water wise, and their use, or no use, of water will have an enormous impact on this drought. They can use the techniques published in a recent Time article called, 5 Ways to Bust California’s Drought, to reduce their water use. Landscape techniques, alternate water sources, and the personal conservation of water can reduce the use of water, and can have a positive change on this water crisis.
Cities are becoming more proactive about dealing with food deserts, mainly by giving tax breaks, as in Baltimore, to grocers that are willing to come to low-income, desertous areas. Pushes from environmental groups are also taking an impact on the cause, as the fight for healthy food has become a hot topic in that arena as well. On the heart (center) of California is a flat area with miles and miles of farms and up to 230 different crops. The central valley agriculture is essential to the United States; it not only delivers almost half of the produce but also helps the economy by also giving more job opportunities (California Department of food and agriculture, 2014). Many families depend on the central valley agriculture to survive economically in the United States. It is a well-known fact that rain and snows in the Sierra Nevada Mountains are a very important element in the central valley. No rain in the central valley can cause many devastating issues to occur quickly. Recently in the year of 2013 California received less rainfall than years before. The small amount of water the central valley is receiving is harming not only to the land but humans and animals as well. It’s destroying the habitats of animals with forest fires caused from the dry spells occurring. The central valley is going through a drought, so much that around this time of year the central valley usually accumulates enough rain for the necessities in the valley, agriculture for example. This year, however, has been different, the central valley hasn’t received enough water and this has caused a drought in the valley. In the Imperial Valley, the eradication of water is controlled by the All-American Canal which gets its water from the Colorado River. In Central Valley the poor distribution is the water problem that is an imbalance lessened by the vast Central Valley project. California had cutbacks in federally funded water in the 1970sand 80s which led to California cities buying water from areas that had a surplus of water. Perhaps the most significant impact of industrial agriculture on the soil is erosion. Though erosion is a natural process that occurs through the movement of soil by water, wind, and gravity, intensive farming acts as a catalyst. The manner in which industrial agriculture is performed makes the farmland more susceptible to erosion. Over-plowing the land removes the protective layer of plants and decaying organic matter whose root systems hold the soil in place. Soil erosion becomes problematic as a result of the slowness of soil formation. Because of the slow process of soil formation, arable lands are vulnerable to desertification or the progression of arid soil becoming barren and incapable of supporting life.
