Brian Sussman and Mark Hendrickson both deny global warming is due to the fact that human are polluting the earth with emissions and other waste products. They both agree that the climate around the globe is changing, but they both say that it is a natural occurrence. Mark Hendrickson and Brian Sussman both made great arguments against manmade global warming, but I am still a little undecided as to which side of the fence I am standing on. Beginning with Mark Hendrickson’s argument, he recognizes that the climate is changing. He wrote in his article “Climate Change-Hoax or Crime of the Century” that the Earth has emerged from a Little Ice Age not that long ago, and it would be worrisome if the climate around the globe was not warming up. The science and data that has been recorded supporting this argument does agree with this argument. He also stated that it is beneficial, since human thrive in warmer climate. Mark also writes that the recent recorded temperatures may be flawed. He says due to the urban heat-island effect the temperature sensors that are near asphalt parking lots are not accurate. This may be true, but are the scientists analyzing and reporting the global warming data only emphasizing the urban heat-island effect? Or are they averaging it all out around the globe? The most accurate measures of temperature come from satellites. One satellite image shows that the Urban Heat Effect has no significant influence on global temperature trends. The NASA/GISS data showed the biggest change in global temperature from 1885 to 2006 happened in Russia, Alaska, Northern Canada and Greenland, where no major urban growth has occurred. Mark also states that the Earth is not getting dangerously warm and that nobody actually k... ... middle of paper ... ...t is not affecting the global atmosphere. Scientists are able to measure it, and have found a correlation between higher levels of CO2 and higher temperatures. I do believe that global warming is happening. The data that I have seen does suggest that there is a natural cause to global warming. There is also data I have seen that also supports the human cause of global warming. The amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases humans are propelling into the atmosphere and into our oceans is un-natural. The balance is thrown off because of our use of fossil fuels and deforestation. It does not make sense to me for people to defend fossil fuels and delay new green alternatives, knowing they will run out in the future. Hendrickson and Sussman both seem to have cherry picked their facts they presented, making global warming seem like a hoax, but I don’t buy their arguments.
Global warming is a scientific, political, and controversial topic. Some believe it is catastrophic, a slow moving killer hiding in the shadows. Others do not even think twice about it as they race by in a Hummer. Global warming is the gradual increase of temperature throughout different climates. It is caused by the greenhouse gas effect in which greenhouse gases, like methane and carbon dioxide, reflect sunlight back and forth. This reflected ultraviolet light bounces between the earth and the ozone layer and becomes trapped, resulting in a gradual rise of temperature. Over time, the slow rise of temperature causes new climates throughout the globe. The article “What Megablazes Tell Us About the Fiery Future of Climate Change” by Tim Dickinson
Global warming has been an issue for quite some time now and only recently has it been adopted by a mass amount of people in their efforts to fight against it. However, there are people and organizations who claim that global warming does not exist or is not caused by human activities. After reading my text, Taking Sides, on the debate between members of UCS and members of the CEI, I wanted to do a little research of my own to see if the claims they were making were accurate. Even though members of the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Competitive Enterprise Institution argue two opposite sides of the global warming issue, they have much in common within their tactics to win the debate. Both organizations have credible and discreditable backgrounds and pay enormous amounts of money to those in administration to gain their support as well as donating money to other organizations for their support. The UCS and CEI also use scientists to prove their positions to be correct, and they both provide scientific evidence on both sides.
To sum up, it is obvious that climate shift is actually happened. Human is considered to be the primary cause of the problem. Activities like burning fossil fuel and deforestation are upsetting the climate by interrupt the natural greenhouse gases balance. Global warming has a long term effects in our life. This is a serious concern that actions should be taken immediately before it is too late.
Ever since the advent of weather observation and prediction technology in the past 150 years, science has created a consensus that the earth is getting warmer, and that human influence is to blame. Some even blame this change, known as global warming, for bouts of extreme weather including cyclonic storms, droughts, wildfires, and heat waves. These scientists (and much of the public) believe that our influence is the problem, as our emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses, the product of the usage of our fuels, are polluting the atmosphere and trapping energy from the sun within. However, a minority group, scientists and public skeptics alike, believe this warming trend is merely a coincidence with the earth’s naturally cyclical climate, and that the activists are overstating something they know little about. Many even agree that if the prospect of our influence were to be true, the effects are not at all that bad, unlike what it is hyped to be. Thus, global warming has become a debatable theory. Much like legislation that prevents schools from teaching evolution as anything more than a theory, now there are also laws that mandate that global warming be considered debatable, and to argue both sides of it (Jonas).
Climate change is considered a controversial topic. Although scientists have been studying the issue, there are many citizens that are still not fully educated about it. Therefore, there are people who support scientists in their results, and there are people who deny the scientists’ findings as propaganda or exaggerations. This is the same issue even in politics, where the two main parties, Democrats and Republicans, have opposing perspectives on climate change. One can really tell just by looking at their approach to the issue, especially their tone and diction. The republican candidates doubts climate change, and when the topic is brought up during an interview, the republicans flatly deny it with no further discussion. They do give some
Opponents of global climate change say that global climate change is a naturally occurring process that’s been happening for a very long time. They go as far as to argue that carbon dioxide isn’t a pollutant, so “‘to suddenly label CO2 as a "pollutant" is a disfavor to a gas that has occupied a huge role in the development and sustainability of all life on this wonderful Earth. Mother Earth has clearly ruled that CO2 is not a pollutant. ' (Robert Balling, as quoted by Popular Technology) (Cook).Carbon dioxide has been labeled a
Before I truly get started, I want to say that I’m not going to take the “global warming is a lie” stance. A harsh disbelief in something there is no true evidence about is just as daft as saying that it exists without any precedence.
As referenced in Al Gores ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ 97% of the peer reviewed scientific reports regarding global warming within the scientific community, determined that global warming is an undeniable fact. The majority of the world’s population is not exposed to this scientific evidence; only the media's interpretation and distortion of the facts based on the head of their organisations
Global climate change is a phenomenon widely accepted by the public in today’s society. A survey from Yale revealed that 63% of Americans believe that global warming is currently happening (Leiserowitz, 2013). And although the public has shown to misunderstand the scientific field, in the case of climate change, science supports their beliefs. Now, a majority of scientists accept that extreme changes are occurring in the world. Evidence is showing that worldwide climate change is real, and the consequences will cause adverse effects to all forms of life.
Scientific evidence has recently been indicating that Earth's ocean and atmosphere are becoming warmer, and its these changes that are happening because of the greenhouse gases that come from daily human activities. (US Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 2015)
For over a hundred years, scientists have been carefully gathering and verifying data on the earth's temperature. The latest data reveals some striking trends:All 10 of the warmest years on record have occurred in the last 15 years The 1990's have already been warmer than the 1980's- the warmest decade on record The global average surface temperature has risen 0.5 degrees (site source)For the first time ever, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the authoritative international body charged with studying this issue, concluded that the observed increase in global average temperature over the last century "is unlikely to be entirely natural in origin" and that "the balance of evidence suggests that there is a discernible human influence on global climate."The Earth's climate is the result of extremely complex interactions among the atmosphere, the oceans, the land masses, and living organisms, which are all warmed daily by the sun's enormous energy. This heat would radiate back into space if not for the atmosphere, which relies on a delicate balance of heat-trapping gases, including water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane, to act as a natural "greenhouse," keeping in just the right amount of the sun's energy to support life. For the past 150 years, though, the atmospheric concentrations of these gases, particularly carbon dioxide. Have been rising. As a result, more heat is being trapped than previously, which in turn is causing the global temperature to rise. Climate scientists have linked the increased levels of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere to human activities, in particular the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas for heating and electricity; gasoline for transportation) deforestation, cattle ranching, and rice farming.
Climate change may be defined as a change in global or regional climate patterns. Jones (1986) first identified climate change in 1986. He confirmed that the climate has been changing since the early days of industrialisation. The issue of climate change is important due to the devastating effect it may have on people’s lives. Adaptation to climate change is highly crucial to survive therefore, its unpredictability is fatal. However, there are claims that climate change is a myth, which mostly is from multi-national companies that are highly dependent on fossil fuels, meaning that they are to blame for climate change. The claim that climate change is a myth is one of the major issues in a discussion in modern times; it remains highly controversial, with many scholars, organizations and institutions contributing in the major debate. In particular, the credibility of the theory of man-made climate change, together with the global warming phenomenon, remains controversial because both the supporters and critics of the concept attempt to provide adequate evidence to support their claims, making it difficult to determine whether the theory is true or false. Nevertheless, it is worth
First lets take a look at the whole earth since of corse we are talking about global warming. If you dig deep enough you will find some evidence for global warming. There has been a slight change in the ground tempeture; however, this is only 30% of the earth which makes this eveidence invalid for as evedince for global warming. We see by this example that global warming is not happening because you cannot use only 30% of the information to speak for all of it. Thus global warming is not happening.
But the debate over whether climate change is real or not is over. The U.S National Academy of Sciences quotes, “Some scientific conclusions or theories have been so thoroughly examined and tested, and supported by many independent observations and results, that their likelihood of subsequently being found to be wrong is vanishingly small. Small conclusions and theories are then regarded as settled facts. This is the case for the conclusions that the Earth System is warming and that much of this warming is very likely due to human activities.” This suggests that there is a strong body of evidence from all around the world including record temperatures, rising sea levels, retreating glaciers and extreme weather events showing that climate change is occurring and it is mostly caused by human activities. According to Metz, “July 2012 marked the hottest month in U.S history, and drought expanded to cover 63% of the contiguous U.S. The average temperature was 25.33 degrees Celsius, 1.8 degrees about the 20th-century average, making the hottest 12-month period the nation had endured in 117 years of record-keeping.” This suggests that these record-breaking temperatures are the result of global warming. It is nothing else but climate
...iously global warming is real. The people that say that is isn't real need to realize, the yes there are weather patterns, but when the patterns get to the warm parts of the pattern, they are gonna be warmer than they ever were before. Yes there will be stretches of cold weather but it wont ever be as cold or as long as it was before. So people need to realize, whether they like it or not, global warming is real.
