“I got to know if you’re alone tonight, can’t stop this feeling, can’t stop this fire, oh, I get hysterical, hysteria, oh can you feel it?”. These are the lyrics to the 1987 hit, Hysteria, by Def Leppard. One might be wondering what a steamy love song has to do with Arthur Millers tragic play, The Crucible. If one examines the play then it will become clear that the play is revolved a twisted love triangle between John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, and Abigail Williams, which is the cause of the hysteria and injustice in the village of Salem.
John Proctor is the protagonist in The Crucible. Proctor is not the most pious of the Salem villagers, although he does not regularly attend the mass nor his kin completely baptized, it is revealed he has issues with the minister of the church, Reverend Paris. Proctor claimed, “I like it not that Mr. Paris lay his hand upon my baby. I see no light of God in that man. I’ll not conceal it” ( Miller 1301). Not attending church is not what will ruin Proctors good name, instead it is adultery Proctor committed with Abigail Williams, betraying his wife, Elizabeth. Proctor later confesses to his sin in front of judge Danforth in hopes he might save himself. By this time in the play, Proctor is very hysterical in his language, perhaps because throughout the whole play Proctor was troubled by his infidelity with Abigail. John has only one thing left by the end of the play which is his name and reputation. Proctor exclaims, “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of those who hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” ( Miller 1357). When judge Danforth asked for proctor to sign a confession, he...

...e friend, Mary Warren, give Elizabeth a poppet with a needle in it at church. Doing so will give Cheever a reason to charge her with witchcraft later on in the play, ultimately working in Abigail’s favor to get John. Abigail has obtained an oddly high influence of power for the person in which she is, but she will never accomplish her true goal of having Proctor to herself.
In the end, all that remains in the heart of conflict is fear. whether that is the fear of losing someone you love, your name, or the fear of the truth. Ernest Hemingway once said, “So far, about morals, I know only that what is moral is what you feel good after and what is immoral is what you feel bad after.”. The relates to Elizabeth, John, Abigail, and every character in the crucible or in the real world. The quote is asking what someone feels is moral and immoral and for themselves to decide.
