Waiting for Godot begins with Vladimir and Estragon by a tree. Vladimir is more dominant in the men’s relationship. Estragon follows the orders of Vladimir. After some time, Estragon wants to leave, but Vladimir objects, saying they must wait for Godot. From the bushes, two men enter: Pozzo and Lucky. Pozzo is Lucky’s master. They are passing by as Pozzo is taking Lucky to the fair to sell him. He explains to Vladimir and Estragon that Lucky has served him for the past six years. While they continue to wait for Godot, Pozzo offers to have Lucky perform. No one is impressed, however, by Lucky’s performance. Pozzo and Lucky leave and a young boy appears to Vladimir and Estragon. He says that Mr. Godot will not be coming that night. The boy did assure, however, that Mr. Godot would be there the next day. The first act concludes with Vladimir and Estragon going to find shelter. The following evening Vladimir and Estragon are at the tree. Book Critique of The Longest Day Cornelius Ryan, born in Dublin, Ireland in 1920, worked as a reporter covering the battles in Europe from 1941-1945 and then the final months of the Pacific Campaign. His articles were printed in both Reuters and the London Daily Telegraph. His first book was The Longest Day, published in 1959, selling over 4 million copies in 27 different editions. In 1962, a director named Darryl Zannuck made the book into a movie. Ryan's next book was The Last Battle, published in 1966.
Maturation is the emergence of personal and behavioral characteristics through growth process. In the novel Beyond the Burning Time, by Kathryn Lasky, Mary Chase goes through these growth processes. In the end Mary goes through many changes and becomes a very mature person. Mary will change in the concept that she will become more aggressive and motivated in making her own decisions. She also becomes more vigorous as well as courageous in a sense that she takes the initiative to save her mother when everyone loses faith. Plus she becomes bolder in addition to more demanding due to having to sneak around and do things she never would have thought of before. She is no longer the quiet little girl that she was. When her mother is taken Mary makes it her obligation to save Mrs. Chase.
In Behind the Beautiful Forevers, Katherine Boo tells the stories and struggles of families living in a slum adjacent to the Sahar Airport in Mumbai, India. Boo details the ways in which the residents of this slum, Annawadi, attempt to escape their poverty, but fail to do so. Despite numerous initiatives sponsored by the Central Government of India to improve the lives of the many individuals living in Annawadi, these programs are ultimately unable to do so due to deep-rooted corruption in the city of Mumbai. Regardless of this, the residents of Annawadi seem to accept corruption as a fact of life, and do little to fight it. As illustrated over the course of Boo’s narrative, this results from the fact that many Annawadians recognize the ways in which the laws of their society allow for the unfair treatment of certain groups of people, especially the poor and religious minorities, and are also cognizant of the fact that they have no real power to change a system that
There are many people who are abused when they are children but we don’t think about how this affects the abused when they are adults. Abuse comes in many forms; physical, verbal, and emotional. Abuse can scar a person mentally and emotionally for the rest of their life. People that have been abused often have to resort to therapy to deal with the demons of their past. How does this mentally affect people who were abused as children?
In ‘Waiting for Godot’, we know little concerning the protagonists, indeed from their comments they appear to know little about themselves and seem bewildered and confused as to the extent of their existence. Their situation is obscure and Vladimir and Estragon spend the day (representative of their lives) waiting for the mysterious Godot, interacting with each other with quick and short speech.

They partake in this activity, this waiting, during both Act I and Act II, and we are led to infer that if Samuel Beckett had composed an Act III, Vladimir and Estragon would still be waiting on the country road beside the tree. Left with no chance to escape the brutal domestic violence, it ultimately provoked her to kill her husband with the help of her oldest son, Randy. From the moment that the curtain rises, Waiting for Godot assumes an unmistakably absurdist identity. Time is ultimately quite important to the story in a metaphorical sense. The passing of time in ‘Waiting for Godot’ is both absurd and illogical. This absurdity is evident in many occasions that are spread out across the entire play. As the first act begins, the reader is told through stage directions that on stage there is “a country road, a tree” and that the time of the day is the “evening”. (Beckett 1). However more information is introduced to the reader when Vladimir states that the tree “must be dead” (Beckett 6). This means there was no sign of life whatsoever during Act I. In the play, the audience is told that the timeline between Act I and Act II is simply a day, however now the tree is described as having “four or five” leaves. Physically speaking, this is impossible considering the fact that the leaves couldn’t have possibly grown in a single day. Vladimir states that “things [had] changed around” the place since ‘yesterday’, since according to him they’d been there the day before. Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot has been said by many people to be a long book about nothing. The two main characters, Vladimir and Estragon, spend all their time sitting by a tree waiting for someone named Godot, whose identity is never revealed to the audience. It may sound pretty dull at first but by looking closely at the book, it becomes apparent that there is more than originally meets the eye. Waiting for Godot was written to be a critical allegory of religious faith, relaying that it is a natural necessity for people to have faith, but faiths such as Catholicism are misleading and corrupt.

When Estragon attempts to sleep as the duo waits for Godot, he has a nightmare and Vladimir runs to help him. In effort to comfort Estragon, who was going into hysterics, Vladimir says, “There…there…Didi is there…don’t be afraid…There…there…it’s all over…” (Beckett 79). This interaction between them expounds on Estragon’s reliance on Vladimir. Human life is absurd and there is no universal meaning, but humanity suffers from this inevitable fact so they try to find meaning through various created purposes to feel significant in their life. The absurdity of life is one of the biggest issues of philosophy because of the consequences it can cause in peoples lives. As human beings we desire purpose, meaning and order in life. Without the content of a meaningful life we feel lost and strive to find something that gives us meaning. We are all suffering from this unattainable goal to find a meaningful life. Albert Camus and Thomas Nagel agree with the fact that life is absurd but disagree on the right approach to life after realizing that life is without meaning.

Debate surrounds the play because, due to its simplicity, almost any interpretation is valid. The main characters, Vladimir and Estragon, are aging men who must wait for a person, being, or object named Godot, but this entity never appears to grace the men with this presence. Both characters essentially demonstrate how one must go through life when hope is nonexistent as they pointlessly attempt to entertain themselves with glum conversation in front of a solitary tree. The Theater of the Absurd, a prevalent movement associated with Waiting for Godot, serves as the basis for the message of hopelessness in his main characters. Samuel Beckett's iconic Waiting for Godot and his perception of the characteristics and influence of the Theater of the Absurd illustrate the pointlessness and hopelessness regarding existence. In the play, boredom is mistaken for hopelessness because the men have nothing to do, as they attempt to occupy themselves as, for some reason, they need to wait for Godot. No hope is present throughout the two-act play with little for Estragon and Vladimir to occupy their time while they, as the title indicates, wait for Godot.
