Technologies such as television and computer games have long been a controversial point in regards to young children’s learning and education. Mental stimulation for children aged three to seven using technology during the brains developmental stage can be used as somewhat of a benefit, as there are now educational television programmes and computer games. Technology can be of benefit for children’s brain health by educational television shows, such as Dora the Explorer and Little Einstein’s. These television shows are recommended for children aged 3 and over. The shows teach children from counting and spelling skills to simple scientific facts. Learning these skills can benefit children by increasing their mental capacity, vocabulary and memory as their brains are growing. Several computer games ca...

...g children and technology, it requires a delicate balance. American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no media for children under two years of age and no more than two hours a day of “high quality content” for children and teens. While there are parental controls that can be set and programs installed to monitor content and duration of use, a motivated child can find ways around them. In some cases, more drastic measures may be necessary including, but not limited to, removing devices, cancelling Internet services and disconnecting TV satellite connections. It is important to intervene early, as the challenges can grow because the reliance on technology can become habitual. The stakes are high and, while technology has made some things easier, parenting children so that they have an appropriate relationship with devices and the world around them is not one of them.
A 2010 Kaiser Foundation study showed that elementary aged children use on average 7.5 hours per day of entertainment technology (Rowan).Various studies have been conducted based on the controversial topic of the impact of technology on a child’s development. Many people believe that by handing their three year old an Ipad or Kindle it’s helping their brain development and enhancing their learning skills. There are some benefits but parents may be holding their children back from fully developing skills that are essential later in life. Parents should limit the use of technology by their children in order for that child’s creativity, deep thinking skills, and ability to focus to develop properly.

The negative influence television has begun to have on children is unreal. Americans seem to ask themselves what brings on such things as the Columbine shootings, eleven-year-olds murdering toddlers, and an increase in teen rapes. Then, these same people allow their children and teenagers to watch movies like Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Frailty. Irving Kristol is part of the American Enterprise Institute and in 1994 wrote an essay pointing out proof of these influences on teens and children. He used a report done in the United Kingdom on what they called "video nasties" (Kristol) and gave evidence of negative behavior in children who had watched such vulgar and violent shows. He again...

In a world full of technological advances being made every day, it comes without surprise that the children of today’s modern world are being accustomed to the use of technology. These rapid advances in technology come with their advantages and disadvantages as many children become absorbed into extended periods of usage without parental intervention. Technology is a modern privilege that allows the world to communicate and interact on scales never seen before. The use of portable devices, such as cellphones, tablets, and laptops, has caused a change in the way children develop and grow by altering emotional, physical, and psychological development into adulthood. Due to the increased use of electronic devices, parental monitoring should always be used to limit the negative effects that portable devices can inflict.
Children who eat less than healthy foods, which are often low in iron, vitamin content, and have a higher fat content, are placed at a higher risk for poor nutritional habits, iron deficiency anemia, and chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, etc. (USDHHS, 2000). Mass media and busy lifestyles also play an important role in the poor food choices of children today, and frequent television viewing prominently shows children foods, which contain large amounts of salt, sugar, and calories and a correlation between television viewing time frames and childhood obesity has been shown. (Proctor, 2003)
In today’s society we are overwhelmed with technology. Technology is changing everyday, and will forever be a staple in our lives. The effect that technology has on our children has brought on some concerns and some praises. Children these days have no choice but to some how be influenced by the ever growing technology in our societies. Our common concern has been that although digital technology has boosted children’s talent for multitasking, their ability to process information deeply may be deteriorating (Carpenter, 2010). Many people have a wide range of opinions on if technology is having a positive influence on our children or a negative, there is a vast amount of evidence to support both of these arguments. Technology can refer to so many things, but there are three main parts of technology that are having the greatest effects on our children: video games, television/media, and computers. The modern technologies we have today are so powerful because they attract our genetic biases, that the human brain has a tremendous love for visually presented information. Video games, television, movies and computer programs are all very visually oriented and therefore they attract and keep the attention of children easily.
There has been a long lasting debate in the resent years on whether or not technology has a positive or negative impact on today’s kids. As the years move on, the negative effects have begun to outnumber the positive. The generations previous spent their childhood making forts, fishing, and using their imaginations, contrary to today’s generations who spend their free time texting, playing video games, and watching videos. Damaging effects such as decreases in school performances, addiction to electronics, and lack of brain development have all been linked to the electronic media stimulation. In order to prevent the future generation from following in the current generations footsteps, one must full comprehend just how much technology impacts
The focus of this debate is whether gaming on hand held devices are beneficial to young children. Watching TV and playing games on a computer or hand-held devices comes under the category of technology and digital media. In the twenty-first century technology has interwoven itself into the structure of developed societies and are now seen as a basic necessity in the negotiating life. According to Gunter and McAleer (1997) technology such as television has integrated itself on to the domestic scenes and is now seen as a piece of furniture practically every house hold owns one. It today’s society It is common place for various forms of technology to be used in daily life even by children.
Our generation has been raised in a technological advanced world and there has been definite controversy over many of these innovations that this new culture has brought. An innovation that has troubled the youth of America for many years is television. Although there is no certainty to eliminate this 'plug-in drug,'; there are many ways to control and monitor your television as a parent.
...ity to predict consequences, manipulating different symbols in the world they represent, making successful transfers and performances in real life situations. However, the negative aspects and effects of technology often lead to problems that affect children’s learning and growing process, including short attention spans, poor academic performances and social skills, and health risks. These negative effects lead to greater chances for children to suffer from psychological disorders and possible illnesses. In order to solve these problems, parents and teacher need to set up guidelines and make necessary adjustments to minimize the negative effects of technology. As children learn to manage and balance their time between technology and other activities, they will become more successful in the future and more prepared the children to thrive in this world of technology.
Benefits of watching television at the young age would be that children’s social skill, emotional skill and creativity can be improved by watching the talk shows; it is proved by a study. For example, Children can learn how to communicate with other people and how to react properly when they are asked to response. In addition, TV shows such as C.S.I Miami, Criminal Minds and Bones can teach children how to think logically and stragically. Although books can transfer the knowledge to the young generations, but it has limitations that certain facial expressions and body languages cannot be transferred by few words. Furthermore, the beautiful images of the nature on the tv screen can let the children to take a long travel from their home to the deep in the ocean, top of Mt.Everest or middle of Sahara the dessert.
