It was during Christmas time in New York when a plane landed at the airport with a special package. Many families anxiously waited for this moment since the day the packages left; they were absolutely ready to receive their packages again with open arms. Once they laid eyes on their special packages, tears of joy flowed and embraces quickly followed. These families have waited and finally saw their beloved relatives come back home from serving in the armed forces. Everything was perfect in the eyes of all the families at the airport. After the soldiers came home, the citizens of New York held many special celebrations because of the return of the soldiers. They thanked them for their service through banners, celebrations, ceremonies, and parties. However, this feeling would soon die as quickly as it grew. At that time, I was a rookie in the detective agency. It was my first year in the field, but I was a troublemaker. I was always inquisitive, often found looking through hidden files and confidential papers. I repeatedly got caught by my boss, Shucks. Shucks was a man who went by the rules. He went strictly by the rules and did everything routinely and precisely. He was a superstitious man, having to do the same routine in order to have a good result. Shucks handled all the investigation cases a certain way, which always started with the call receiving the case. Then, as he believes, a certain chain of events must happen in a certain sequence in order for the case to be successful. He never questioned anything said by his superiors and expected the same from me and my coworkers. It never seemed like he was fond of me because of my, as he called it, nosy status, and this was made obvious with my first mission. It was December ... ... middle of paper ... ...ear. “You feel better, Collin? You seem to breathe easier,” Pop said. I chuckled. “Yeah, it seems like that. I can’t wait for the next mission.” Pop let out a chortle, “Call me when you get another one, Collin.” He walked to his car, waved goodbye, and drove away. Now it was just me and Shucks. We walked to the car silently. He started the car and drove back to the agency. When we neared our destination, Shucks confessed, “Collin, I was a little hard on you at first, but you really came through on this mission. I owe you an apology, rookie. I take back what I said about your nosy status. I actually think that inquisitive and curious are the right adjectives this time. Rookie, don’t change; don’t make me change my mind about your curious personality. We need more people like you, Collin. Don’t be surprised if you get a call soon, and remember to answer the phone”

The adjustment from years on the frontlines of World War I to the mundane everyday life of a small Oklahoma town can be difficult. Ernest Hemingway’s character Harold Krebs, has a harder time adjusting to home life than most soldiers that had returned home. Krebs returned years after the war was over and was expected to conform back into societies expectations with little time to adapt back to a life not surrounded by war. Women take a prominent role in Krebs’s life and have strong influences on him. In the short story “Soldier’s Home” Hemingway uses the women Krebs interacts with to show Krebs internal struggle of attraction and repulsion to conformity.
“Soldier’s Home” by Ernest Hemingway is about a Methodist College student that goes to war from Kansas. When Krebs comes back from war, he starts a life of lying and deceit that he finds difficult to escape. Krebs continues lying about the past and his present in Hemingway’s “Soldier’s Home.” Hemingway conveys Krebs’ inability to embrace the truth of the past and the present through plot in the exposition, conflict, and climax.
All throughout this semester we have learned a great deal about the homecoming of our military veterans. From the wounds they live with, to the battles they face at home, and these men and women’s reintegration into society. Today I would live to focus somewhere else. Not on the soldiers who risk their lives and return home scarred and different, but on the families who missed them and welcomed them back home and back into society. These mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, sons, daughters, siblings, are tasked with the tremendous task of helping and loving a loved one who has been changed by war.
Where we come from allows us to see the world differently; it can give us privilege, acknowledgment, standard. This, in turn, allows us to interpret the world from our point of view. In Soldier’s Home by E. Hemingway for example we’re told the story of soldier Krebs who returns home post post-war and has clear difficulty readjusting to life back home because the war, France, and Germany is all he knows now. His tardiness in return after the war seems to have started this internal, non acceptance of the truth in his stories because that part of post-war homecomings was over. Since time began there has always been conflict. Whether it be religious, race oriented, or conflict over land. Conflicts have lead countries and nations to amass armies. While some armies are small, others may be vast in size. No matter the size of the Army they all have one thing in common… their Soldiers. As Non-Commissioned Officers we would be without a profession if we did not take care of, and retain our Soldiers. Through their mishaps and mistakes it is our job to lead them as they will, hopefully, be taking over our position as they climb the ladder to becoming the next great leader we aspire them to become. War has always been inevitable throughout the history of the world. The outcomes can differ greatly; it’s usually either a win or a loss. Wins or losses are just definite statements, but photos can represent these statements. Alfred Eisenstaedt’s “V-J Day in Times Square” shows an American sailor kissing a young woman right in the middle of Times Square, despite their surroundings. This iconic photo was taken after the U.S. declared victory over Japan in World War II, and was published in Life magazine a week later. John Gap’s (III) photo shows a young girl being consoled at a soldier’s funeral in a local high school gymnasium, later to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. This humble photo was taken during the war still raging in Afghanistan, showing that these types of losses happen quite often, as there are no iconic photos for Afghanistan compared to the photo shot after the win over World War II. Unlike its counterpart, this photo was published only at a local level on a website. Both these photos show a soldier being dismissed to go home from war. Although the two photos share that common factor, the scenario in which the soldier comes home differs greatly. Through these photos, Albert Eisenstaedt and John Gaps III help evoke pathos and give the observer a sense of the pride and the devastation felt of a home coming from war using photographic elements such as framing, focus, and angles.
The initial reaction I received from reading Soldier's Home, and my feelings about Soldier's Home now are not the same. Initially, I thought Harold Krebs is this soldier who fought for two years, returns home, and is disconnected from society because he is in a childlike state of mind, while everyone else has grown up. I felt that Krebs lost his immature years, late teens to early 20's, because he went from college to the military. I still see him as disconnected from society, because there isn't anyone or anything that can connect him to the simple life that his once before close friends and family are living. He has been through a traumatic experience for the past two years, and he does not have anyone genuinely interested in him enough to take the time to find out what's going on in his mind and heart. Krebs is in a battle after the battle.
The story has different elements that make it a story, that make it whole. Setting is one of those elements. The book defines setting as “the context in which the action of the story occurs” (131). After reading “Soldier’s Home” by Ernest Hemmingway, setting played a very important part to this story. A different setting could possibly change the outcome or the mood of the story and here are some reasons why.
When I was seventeen I nervously traveled about 350 miles from my sleepy little home town of Freedom, Wyoming to the relatively enormous city of Boise, Idaho to go to the Military Entrance Processing Station. This wasn 't the first time I had been this far from home by myself, but it was the first time I was making adult decisions without my parents involvement.
