When Tillich makes reference to his famous quote I feel that he was saying that culture and religion go hand in hand with one another. Each culture deprives from religious substance. In every culture the depth and the dimension of that relationship vary. Religion is something that each of us have in some form or some aspect. Something that comes to mind is when Tillich was speaking of the greatest commandment. Tillich spoke about this in his book Theology of Culture chapter four. When I say this I feel that you can make anyone or anything your God. In return you can love that God with all your heart. Regardless of what type of God you choose there is always judgment. Tillich mentioned judgment of cultures and religious belief. Tillich mentioned that the church is also of the work and included under the judgment with which judges the world. In some of the pictures that we viewed in this category relates to making your religion your culture. The films that came to mind were “The Mission”, “The Chosen”, “The Rapture”, “Paris is Burning” and The Long Walk Home. In “The Mission” Mendoza was so caught up in doing his job capturing Guaranis, that he never once thought about how it affected the Guranis people. In my opinion his job became his god. In the film “The Chosen” the families were so caught up in religion and their culture; that did not want to socialize or interact with no one outside their religion. They felt that if you were not part of their religious belief or culture then you were not worthy enough. I envision this happening today amongst Christian denominations. 11) The painting “Red and Blue Horse” in my opinion is a cultural painting. Horses are a big part of our ancestors and present people today. Horses were a mode of transportation for many centuries, and they are beautiful creatures.

This is a celebration of luxury and prosperity, the French government declared June 30, 1878, a national holiday. It is in our culture that whenever we have a victory over something declare a day as a holiday.
The work that I have chosen to talk about was “The Old Stagecoach by Eastman Johnson.” This work would be considered a painting. The images that are shown in the painting are a old stagecoach as the name of the painting suggest. The stagecoach does not have any wheel and so it just sits on the ground. There are also a bunch of children that are portrayed playing inside and on top of the stagecoach. The colors that are used in this painting are all realistic, this is very important because it portrays what a warm summer day would like on a farm. There are a lot of different colors such as bright green grass and bright colors for the clothes that the children are wearing. There a quite a few principles are elements that are used in the painting. One of the first principles that I noticed was the emphasis of the stagecoach. It appears in the center of the image and is definitely the main focus of the image. The children in the image are definitely important to the painting to show how much the they enjoy the stagecoach. There is also a good use of variety in the colors used for what each child is wearing which also brings interest to the painting.
Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.
Although often inspired by natural landmarks and places, crafted landscapes are separate from the land the pieces attempt to depict (Andrews 1). A piece of artwork is a vessel to judge how an artist or culture saw, felt and depicted nature. As of a result, citizens of similar cultures may depict similar themes in their work in a variety of different styles. Both Barret’s 1785/1819 Untitled (Landscape) and Lacroix’s 1763 A Shipwreck display distinct European attitudes towards nature while attempting to captivate the audience in a similar way.
Examining the formal qualities of Homer Watson’s painting Horse and Rider In A Landscape was quite interesting. I chose to analyze this piece as apposed to the others because it was the piece I liked the least, therefore making me analyze it more closely and discover other aspects of the work, besides aesthetics.
Race and religion are two concepts in American culture that can really tie people together, or clearly separate them apart. A group forged by strong common roots in both race and religion can be a powerful societal force, if it wants to be. The Nation of Islam is a small but growing religion in America that has become somewhat of a social movement because of its strong and radical ideas on race. In this paper, I will try to explore the beliefs of the Nation of Islam, and the ramifications it could and has had on racial relations in America. The Nation of Islam, or NOI, is a relatively new religion. The first temple of Islam was established in Detroit by Master Fard Muhammed in 1930. Much of the theology was based on the simple facts that: "Allah is god, the white man is the devil, and the so-called Negroes are the Asiatic black people, the cream of the earth."(1) And, in accordance with their bizarre view of creation, involving a mad scientist creating the white race from the black race, the twentieth century represents the time for black people to regain their rightful position as god¹s chosen people. (1) The Nation of Islam was spawned from Orthodox Islam, an age-old religion. However, Orthodox Islam has openly denounced the NOI as a heretic sect for three main reasons: the NOI¹s rejection of the belief in an afterlife, its tendency to view human leaders as deified figures, and its strong racist attitudes. (2) For a brief time, during the seventies, Wallace Deen Muhammed became the leader of the NOI and tried to take it in a new direction, more conforming to "true Islamic beliefs." This painting is about a biblical event when Jesus walked on water and he told Peter to do the same; according to the story Peter took few steps until he got distracted by his surrounding and started to drawn. The lesson of this story to believers of Christ is that we should always put our focus on Christ no matter how big and difficult the problem might be. Wizt painted Jesus on water wearing a beautiful red gown and a halo around his head. the halo represent Jesus position of been the son of God in the heavenly realm. The detail and emphasis that Wizt put in the rows and how perfectly Jesus gown floats gives the viewer an illusion of him walking over water.
This particular painting is exaggerated in both size and scale as it stands at over nine feet. The high-keyed cinematic color highlights Wiley’s interest in the aestheticization of power and masculinity. We see a clash of centuries and societies as the figures are taken out of context and placed in one that creates a charged non-space outside of time. Wiley creates a surrealistic landscape of whimsical color within a minimal landscape with subject matter of men that Wiley met on the streets of Harlem, New York. These men are most likely members of the same crew or gang from Harlem, with the leader of the pack chosen to be riding the horse.
Since the beginning of time religion has been a key factor in the establishment and maintaining of civilizations. In this paper i will be discussing the differences in how they view death and applying it to how it affects their cultural beliefs. In order to fully discuss these dissimilarities we must first look at a brief background of each major religion.
In terms of colours, the white colour dominates in this painting. It signifies purity, freedom and change. In the past the rulers have dominated over the people but now the prevailing power is in the hands of the peasants. The large green leaves, echoing the horse`s mane in the painting symbolise the revival of the human mind and notify of the arriving change in people`s lives.
Culture is a way of life that allows a diverse group of people to interrelate with one another. It is usually passed down from one generation to the next by communication and imitation. The term itself has a set definition, but it normally relates to the behavior, beliefs, values, and symbols that are accepted by a group of people. Culture can also be used to describe the time period and events in history. In the sense of what was deemed as popular during a specific stage in time and its impact on the culture surrounding it. Micro-historian have been dissecting and interpreting the meaning of popular culture and the courses of action that lead up to the events.
It was the last room of the museum and as soon as I walked in I was captivated by this painting. The main attention is on the beautiful torso of a man with the most beautiful impeccable skin, his expression heavenly. I inspected the painting for quite some time, I knew it was Christ and a group of people seeking forgiveness, the position of his hand is almost as if inviting you to join him. The painting gave me a sense of peace. Finally, I looked at the title “Christ and the Penitents, n.d.”
Is it possible to be a Muslim without believing the validity of the prophecies of Mohammed? Is it possible to be a Christian without believing in the resurrection of Jesus? My definition of religion transformed greatly during my studies the past few months. Even as a religion major at St. Olaf College I thought of religion very narrowly, as a construct of metaphysical beliefs. But I've come to realize that religion runs far deeper than my Lutheran mind previously conceived.
Art has had its roots, one may argue, when civilization was born. With each respective civilization and time periods from the past, humans have formed a diverse and unique society, a group of people with their own individual characteristics, cultures, as well as philosophies within which all kinds of differing ideas, thoughts and opinions are always brought upon for challenge and evaluation. These distinct aspects of a culture and/or time period may be recorded by people in varying forms of expression we all know as art. Directly from where culture had originated, events and/or emotions from that time period have been reflected or directly recorded in the arrangement of pictures i.e. paintings from the past which inform us about the people’s experiences and events in the past historical periods. Ultimately, History is the record of the development and how we have evolved as humans together in a society. History can be expressed and reflected in different kinds of music, sculptures, as well as paintings. There are several different periods of Art, each has contributed and reflected to how a society was. Art has been usually used by historians as one of the vehicles of history to illustrate and illuminate it as they are able to recognize that some types of art may be able to help them identify and explain the nature of societies and periods in history. Art and society have counteracted with each different type bringing forth new arts and new societies for many generations to come. Ideas have caused responses by citizens and therefore bring forth several different types of influences on a period’s background, heredity, and environments.
