Culture and Religion Go Hand in Hand

When Tillich makes reference to his famous quote I feel that he was saying that culture and religion go hand in hand with one another. Each culture deprives from religious substance. In every culture the depth and the dimension of that relationship vary. Religion is something that each of us have in some form or some aspect. Something that comes to mind is when Tillich was speaking of the greatest commandment. Tillich spoke about this in his book Theology of Culture chapter four. When I say this I feel that you can make anyone or anything your God. In return you can love that God with all your heart. Regardless of what type of God you choose there is always judgment. Tillich mentioned judgment of cultures and religious belief. Tillich mentioned that the church is also of the work and included under the judgment with which judges the world. In some of the pictures that we viewed in this category relates to making your religion your culture. The films that came to mind were “The Mission”, “The Chosen”, “The Rapture”, “Paris is Burning” and The Long Walk Home. In “The Mission” Mendoza was so caught up in doing his job capturing Guaranis, that he never once thought about how it affected the Guranis people. In my opinion his job became his god. In the film “The Chosen” the families were so caught up in religion and their culture; that did not want to socialize or interact with no one outside their religion. They felt that if you were not part of their religious belief or culture then you were not worthy enough. I envision this happening today amongst Christian denominations. 10) The painting “The Pentecost” is about religion. The biblical event takes place in the bible when three thousand souls were saved. The Bible explains that this is when the first church was organized.
11) The painting “Red and Blue Horse” in my opinion is a cultural painting. Horses are a big part of our ancestors and present people today. Horses were a mode of transportation for many centuries, and they are beautiful creatures.
12)The” Rue Mosnier Decorated with Flags” is a cultural painting. This painting commemorates the recent Exposition Universelle. This is a celebration of luxury and prosperity, the French government declared June 30, 1878, a national holiday. It is in our culture that whenever we have a victory over something declare a day as a holiday.
