The outburst of creativity among African American occurred in every aspect of art. This cultural movement became The New Negro Movement and later the "Harlem Renaissance. Harlem attracted a prosperous and stylish middle class, which sprouted an artistic center. African Americans were encouraged to celebrate their heritage; The Harlem Renaissance movement was a period of cultural production dating from the end of World War I through the onset of the Great Depression. Harlem from 1917-1930 went through a cultural change a rejuvenation of sorts this change would bring about African-American pride and creativity in all forms of arts, a Renaissance. These artists were able to give a true picture of the African-American life, cultural and experience in and outside of Harlem in their artworks. Some artists painted about the great migration from the South given a vivid and rich insight and visual looks at how living in the South looks compared to new life in the north like Jacob Lawrence. Other artist painted about the Harlem scene light artist Palmer Hayden. ”Palmer Hayden was in Paris during most of the Harlem Renaissance” (Chamber 68). Hayden was from Harlem, but was stationed in Europe during World War I when he came home on to visit he was captivated by the new art movement that was taken place in Harlem during this time. His artworks take an in-depth look at the Harlem scene, social and political movements and everyday normal life. One of Hayden 's most famous paintings is name Midsummer night in Harlem; this painting allows the viewer to see what a midafternoon during the summertime in Harlem look like. The viewer will first notice the busy street with children playing and adults sitting on the stoops engaged in everyday conversation. Hayden gives the viewer a look at the musical element of Harlem, one of the people in the painting is sitting down on the stairs playing a guitar.
