There are several countries which are located within the Combined Joint Task Force- Horn of Africa AOR. This paper will discuss the cultural influence of the Republic of Djibouti as well as its influence on bordering countries within its region. Additionally, this paper will portray Djibouti’s global significance and its effect on United States interest within the AOR. Historically, Djibouti’s strategic location and status as a free trade zone within the Horn of Africa has played a major role in this country’s importance throughout the globe. Hence, Djibouti maintains relationships with numerous countries and to date openly welcomes negotiations with other countries that can contribute to the country’s economic development. Continued U.S. interest within the nation ensures the financial growth of the region and has a significant impact on the development of the Djiboutian government. As a high context environment the Djiboutian people recognize the importance of maintaining a good rapport with other nations in the best interest of their local government and the economic progress of their nation.
First, in order to comprehend the cultural background of Djibouti we need to have some basic background and knowledge of the country’s history. For thousands of years Djibouti has facilitated trading between the neighboring Arab peninsulas. Initially, the area was well-known for trading hides and skins for the perfumes and spices that came from Egypt. In the 1800’s France gained a foothold in the region through the use of various treaties. It wasn’t until the 1970’s that Djibouti gained its independence from the French government. It is thought-provoking, in the sense that Africa’s need for foreign created a race to the bottom, much like what Pietra Rivoli described in The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy. Due to some African states’ reliance on foreign aid in order to mine and profit on their resources, they allow business standards to be lowered and for Chinese firms to tip the contracts moresoever in the favor of Chinese firms. This lowers the potential earnings of African states by lowering royalty rates, for example. Additionally, Burgis’ research was thorough and transparent. When he did not receive a response or if his questions were dodged, he made it obvious to the readers. Sure, some could view this book as too anecdotal to be used as a credible source of Africa’s situation. However, this is due to the nature of the system Burgis is writing about; after all, they are shadow states for a reason. Some readers will be saddened by this text, others angry, most curious to learn more, but above all, everyone will be intellectually stimulated and

Africa is the world’s second largest continent and the most populous. There are 54 individual countries in Africa, which are located in either the western, eastern, southern, central or northern regions of the continent. Countries in Africa are well known for their different tradition and cultural practices that have been preserved for a very long time. Culture and tradition are important in African communities since members of different communities in Africa express themselves through their culture and traditions. One of the ways they express themselves is through their cultural dances.
Out of all of the continents, Africa is the most central. It is told that the first man was found in Africa, so with this, many feel that Africa is the birthplace of human culture. Within this continent, there are many different lifestyles, which are lived. Many blame the variety of lifestyles on western influence, but the truth is that different lifestyles began thousands of years before the west had influence on Africa. African’s lifestyles revolve mostly around what is called “triple heritage.” Triple heritage consists of traditional African beliefs, Islam beliefs, and the beliefs of western cultures. Due to different heritages, the African people speak Swahili, Arabic, and English. Today, the people of Africa have little interest in what is going on outside of Africa.
