Research suggests that individuals find attractive people more competent than non-attractive people (Hosoda, Stone-Romero, and Coats 435). The bias towards people perceived to be attractive offers more advantages to them in the social as well as corporate world. Attractive people in the city of Miami experience an elevated social status in such great length that the city itself is reputed for the bias. This did not cross fictional television show Nip/Tuck who went ahead to use it as a backdrop. Statistics show that there are 218 board-certified plastic surgeons in active practice in Miami. The popularity of the practice is reinforced by the fact that 5.2 per 100,000 people are prospective candidates for the surgery (Ruiz forbes.com).
Miami’s economy is boosted by the large spending habits of its people who spend about seven million dollars alone in hair coloring. The issue of loss of hair is as well addressed by the fact that there are many cosmetic products that promote hair growth. This is reinforced by the spending figures of close to three hundred thousand dollars on hair growth products. Facial cosmetics have been on the rise with a staggering $2,786,883 spent on various beauty products. These range from products that address various facial cover as well as those that address issues to do with anti-wrinkles, acne, anti-aging products among many others. General skin care; from shampoos to skin moisturizers have a figure of $12,241,260 (Ruiz forbes.com). These figures roughly gives us the depth and length that the people of Miami are prepared to go to acquire the perfect looking figures shown in the magazines and television sets that ooze of social status.

Currently television networks and stations require a set appearance and weight standards for news reporters, newscasters, weather forecaster. Our society looks at the news and weather to see not only the news and weather but the persons. They believe that physical attractiveness and pleasing body image have long been known to have marketplace advantages. Therefore many organizations set appearance standards for their employees, because they think that will project a particular image and as well as a favorable working environment. It formulates hypotheses and develops and conducts experimental designs to test the hypotheses’ reliability and validity. Furthermore, it aims to stimulate discussion about its findings.
There is a famous saying that states, “ we should not judge a book by its cover”, but oftentimes the first thing noticed on a person is their looks. One’s “physical beauty” strongly influences people’s first impressions of them. As a whole, we tend to assume that pretty people are more likeable and better people than those who are unattractive. Around the world, we believe that what is beautiful is good. There is a general consensus within a culture about what is considered physically appealing and beautiful. “Physical beauty” is associated with being more sociable, intelligent, and even socially skilled. Society shares this common notion of who has and who does not have “physical beauty”. Thus, “physical beauty”, as seen

Beneath the ‘poem’ is an introduction to the product. It emphasizes the product’s natural ingredients, things that seem as though they would be better in a salad dressing than on one’s hair. However, these ingredients are important. First, the emphasis the ‘naturalness’ of the product in turn emphasizes the natural state of the projected audience’s hair. Secondly, its use of Americanized products instead of typical African products (olive oil versus jojoba oil) separate this ad from the typical ‘natural hair care product’ ads. This ad is geared towards a new type of Black woman, one who is more interested in a connection to spirituality and art than to Africa.

Obesity has been accepted in the American society as a norm. According to the U.S. office of the Surgeon General, in 1999, 6 in 10 American adults were classified as obese or overweight (McMurray, par. 5). In order for one to be classified as obese they’re body mass index (BMI) must be 30 or greater. The number of obese in America has continued to increase. It has been estimated by The World Health Organization that 300 million people will be obese by 2025 (Bailey 3). Since obesity comes with many health risks, many feel it should be treated as a disease.

As a result of the wide variety of media that is in the world, it plays as one of the main factors to most of the body distortion and low self-esteems that is put on men and women. According to Lau, beauty or body perfection, “...is a social/cultural construct, and that advertising, lifestyle/entertainment magazines, movies, scripted and reality television, documentaries and even public service campaigns all play a role in normalising the unrealistic pursuit of body perfection” (Lau, Harris-Moore…). Because of the broad variety of media there is, each has a different perspective on what the ideal ‘real beauty’ is, this causes a lot of pressure to be put upon people on how they should truly appear. In addition, media is also setting the standards that people should start looking like celebrities. As stated by a plastic surgeon, Z. Paul Lorenc in The Culture of Beauty, is that “...one of several concerns is the more and more Americans are seeking plastic surgery because of the very high beauty bar set by celebrities” (Gerdes, The Culture of Beauty). Due to the media constantly flaunting how attractive celebrities are, it makes men and women feel as if they are not good enough and that they need to modify themselves to become socially acceptable in the eye of
