Cuba, while a common source of political tension, is truly one of the hidden gems of the world. It is a nation rich in culture, while still keeping up with modern society. It’s cuisine is so different of that of anywhere else, as is its entertainment. Cuban cuisine has been influenced over time by French, African, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, and Portuguese cultures. Traditional Cuban cooking has little emphasis on measurements, order, or timing. Most of the food is sauteed or slow-cooked. Most Cuban cooking relies on basic spices, such as garlic, cumin, and oregano (Rosario). Many dishes use a sofrito as their base. Sofrito is a mixture of onion, green pepper, garlic, oregano, and ground pepper, which is then fried in olive oil. Meats are usually marinated in citrus juices, and then roasted over low heat. A typical Cuban breakfast may consist of a tostada and cafe con leche (Rosario). A tostada is a piece of bread which is buttered and toasted. Cafe con leche is a combination of espresso and milk.
