The French establishment of the Organisation of Internationale de la Francophonie was their resistance to outside cultural influence. The French believed that globalization will threaten cultural diversity and that American culture will have an adverse effect on French culture. The preservation of French language was a way to retain it cultural identity in the world and not be pushed to a homogeneous world culture. More specifically France was resisting American culture. The French had the notion that America was this “financial and intellectual imperialism that grabs consciousness, way of thinking, way of living” (136). Even though, France resistance to globalization was strong; it could not escape the influence of outside culture. However cultural interaction is now more feasible with technological advancement and expansion. The availability of the internet has greatly influence the spread of ideas across the globe. It is not surprising that French speakers have adapted the word email and start up from American culture. With many online social networking websites such as the popular Facebook that has connected millions of people across the globe.
Apart from protection of French language authenticity, it also had media and educational policy that it enforces maintains its cultural identity. It makes theaters and television channels “show a certain number of French films, to sustain domestic film production in competition with lowbrow Hollywood fare” (136). The formation of the world economy has shaped and encouraged cultural exchange around the world. In the past different countries explored foreign areas in search of valuable commodities and resources. Such as the Europeans interest in Eastern goods motivated them to explore the East. The interaction between the East and West promoted cross-cultural exchange. The shared interest for profit will motivate countries to cooperate and be more interdependent. Furthermore, the growth and expansion of the global economy has been helped form international organization such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. In a way world trade and international business has made countries more interconnected to one another.
There are many cumulative events that have influenced Western Civilization reflective in today’s modern world, but the most impactful was the French Revolution. Western Civilization has many historic milestones building to the world as we know it, but none set such broad themes that are felt in our everyday life. Many of these themes have become so ingrained into the way we live that we can’t understand a world without them. For this reason, the effects of the French Revolution molded the westernized world more so than any other event. I consider the French Revolution the catalyst to how our world is shaped today. Cultural exchange in the eleventh to fourteenth centuries was revolutionized by new forms of contact and stronger connections between civilizations. French is a widespread language in the US and can be found easily in California. Much material can be found in French, including government material and even instructions from a handbook. Although the French population has always been relatively small, it has had a great impact on California culture. For example, French is taught in high schools and college and there are even private schools dedicated to teaching French. It is such a popular language that most of us have even heard a few of the phrases like ‘bonjour,’ ‘je t’aime,’ and ‘voila.’ This subject-verb-object language has influenced government and culture in California and the US in general.

Although Tremblay talks about the American culture’s influence on Canada as a whole, his main concern in this article is Quebec, which is in a separate league than the rest of Canada due to its different linguistics. Tremblay focuses on Quebec culture and raises many significant issues that should be noticed. He mentions that due to their similarity in language, Canadian television is “much more exposed to American influences”2. Therefore, the Quebecois feel rather alienated in terms of their distinct culture and “like Canadians, want to keep their protective policies and regulations concerning the promotion of their cultural identity”3. According to our class discussion culture is a shared way of life with material land non-material components that are shared through customs and behavior. Culture is not static people shape and change culture. A culture can change through many ways but this paper is going to focus on two three specific ways global businesses, immigration and media. The term globalization can be worrisome for many as they fear the changes the country is making. Nevertheless globalization does not have to be detrimental to our culture in fact I argue that in some way globalization improves American culture.

The French are all about preserving their culture and being individualized. They often take great pride in the French products and the French style, and believe in keeping the French culture “pure” so they also limit the amount of foreign goods that are being imported. But during the World Wars the French began to allow foreigners to immigrate into France to take jobs due to an increase in job shortages. The immigration from the World Wars added to the diversity of the French culture. Ever since the 1850’s there has been a steady flow of immigration into France, and now nine percent of the French population is made up of immigrants (Gofen 62). The break down of the cultures in France is eighty-five percent of the French population is Roman Catholic, eight percent Muslim, two percent Protestants, and one percent Jewish. From 1801-1905, Roman Catholicism was the man religion in France and bishops and priests were being paid by the government to be state officials. But this was broken in 1905 (“France” 460). The current debate in France is the banning of religious symbols in public school systems. An example of a religious symbol being banned is headscarves. Headscarves have been banned since 2004, but the French do not allow ANY religious symbols in public school systems (“In Knots”) France should not continue to ban the wearing of religious symbols in public school systems because since the World Wars France began to allow foreigners to immigrate into France, in the United States there are no laws restricting the wearing of religious symbols, and important French figures have had foreign parents.
