“Almost every way we make electricity today, except for the emerging renewables and nuclear, puts out CO2. And so, what we're going to have to do at a global scale, is create a new system. And so, we need energy miracles.” Bill Gates means that nuclear energy will be the future of the world. And also the whole world uses about 44,000,000 kWh of electricity every day (Greenbang). For such enormous amount of electricity, we need to use nuclear energy. According to multiple studies, using nuclear energy can produce an enormous amount of electricity, require a lot of money to use it, provide a good environment to for earth, and be really safe. Not like other kind of power plant, such as thermal power plant, solar power plant, nuclear power plant can create huge amount of electricity. As we know, nuclear power plant is a complex machine, knowing how nuclear power plant works is really important. Nuclear power plant is still using heat to create steam and spin the turbine to produce electricity. The processed that generate the heat is called fission. Inside the reactor, there are some uranium rod and some carbon rod called control rod. Usually fission will happen inside the reactor between the uranium rod, if the reactor gets too hot, the system will slide down the control rod to reduce fission in order to reduce the heat (“Nuclear Power Reactors”). Because nuclear reactor using special way to produce electricity, it create an enormous amount of electricity. In 2012, the “average” nuclear power plant in the United State generated about 11.8 billion kilowatt-hour of electricity. There were 65 nuclear power plant with 104 nuclear reactor that generated a total of 769 billion kilowatt-hour of electricity (“How Much Electricity Does a Typical Nuclear Power Plant Generate?”). For that such enormous amount of electricity has been generated, it is really important that a country has nuclear power plants, because “a typical 1000 megawatt reactor can provide enough electricity for a modern city of up to one million people. (“What Is Uranium? How Does It Work”)” One of the main part of the reactor is the fuel that nuclear reactor use. Uranium has a melting point of 1132 oC, for that high melting point, there is really hot in the nuclear reactor (“What Is Uranium? How Does It Work?”). For this reason, nuclear reactor can create massive amount of steam then spin a strong turbine.
Julia Simmons Mr. Scheib IB-MYP Honors Integrated Science 16 December 2014 Wind Energy Argument Wind energy has been around for a very long time, as early as 5,000 B.C.. It has even been historically utilized by the Egyptians, Dutch, Persians, and more. Wind energy is known as an alternative source of energy, which is any form of energy that does not harm our environment or diminish any natural sources. Wind energy is renewable, is not expensive, and is a clean source of energy that does not produce
present day Croatia. Thomas Edison was born on February 11th, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. The two met when Tesla moved to the United States in 1884 to work at Edison Machine Works, a manufacturing company set up to produce components of Edison’s illumination systems. Though similarly brilliant, the two had very different characters. Shortly after, Tesla left Edison Machine Works to pursue his own ambitions as a rival inventor. During their time period, their corresponding
more people are looking for more ways to save on cost of the most used items. Electricity is the most common and used item people use in everyday life, but what they do not know is that there is a simpler way to produce electricity with magnets. How do magnets produce electricity? Why not use magnets to produce all electricity? These questions are common in people that research different avenues to provide electricity without having to spend a fortune on other renewable energy sources. Magnets and
using water to power something came in the simplest form with the concept of using of an object to push water through thus creating motion then transferring it into energy. Then taking that energy into turning an object such as corn that could be grounded into meal or wheat turned into flour. As time progressed so did technology we learned quickly that we harness this into electricity with the help of dams. The history of the water turbine first we need to start in Medieval times with the creation of
Hydropower, the use of water to power machinery or produce electricity, provides the most renewable energy in the United States, and uses alternating current in most modern plants ("Hydropower…”). Hydropower relies on the water cycle and is a clean fuel source; it doesn’t pollute the environment like plants that burn fossil fuels. It is by far the most efficient way to generate electricity, being half the cost of using nuclear power, two-fifths the cost of using fossil fuels, and a quarter the
of the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. Three Phase Systems Assignment 1 D1 Sean Smith JLR Electricity is the most used source of power in the modern world. We something that is connected too electricity practically all of the time in the modern era from mobile phones to the lighting in our homes. Thinking about where our electricity comes from is something that we never really think about but the cycle that electricity goes through before reaching us is quite a long process
that many individuals associate with brilliance. Moreover, Tesla is a name that ignites impulses within an individual’s brain which illuminate, via bio-circuitry, the thought association of Tesla and brilliance, similar to the force we term as electricity. Brilliance however, shouldn’t be the only descriptive word to come to mind when thinking of one of the greatest engineers and inventors to live. Innovation and determination should be undoubtedly included in the list of descriptive words of Mr
Once the Industrial Revolution started most of the at home work stop and factory work had began. The industrial Revolution had improved life for people, not only did it improve life but it also improved banking, transportation and communication systems. There is one man who really got the Industrial Revolution started his name was Sir Richard Arkwright. He made a very significant invention, the invention he made was called the spinning frame. Also known as the water-frame, a machine that makes
Capturing Pressure for a Greener Future At this very moment, the amount of cars driving on roads or highways would seem to be an uncountable number. In reality, according to Statistic Brain, the number of cars being manufactured in the world exceeds 48,039,060. This number is not counting commercial vehicles, and due to the high demand for commercial vehicles for today’s businesses, the number can be assumed to be much higher. The typical car will release an exorbitant amount of CO2, which to certain
According to the lecture presented by Hutchinson in module four, technology is explained as a system as opposed to our everyday electronics. Many individuals today think of technology in the terms of electrical appliances and the everyday uses of electricity. However, we see that technology is much bigger than that. In the book, Ways of Social Change, technology is understood in three ways. First, technology includes knowledge; we must know how to operate certain things, we must know the skills used
Recommendation It is recommend to eliminate solar subsidies programs and find an alternative method for sustainable energy, such as batteries. Background Solar power subsidies were introduced to the United States from the development of solar power systems in 1963 as a response to threats of a possible war from the growing nuclear development from space exploration (History of Solar Energy in California, 2014). This event was one of the first significant causes that led Americans to steer away from
civilization known to understand electricity was the ancient Greeks because of the electric fish in the Nile River. In the 1600’s William Gilbert an English Physician studied electricity and magnetism; studies were continued by other researchers such as Robert Boyle and Benjamin Franklin. Then by the 1800’s scientist Allesandro Volta had identified a way to harness electricity in a battery format and he had also discovered the chemical reactions that electricity could produce. Volta also invented
RESEARCH ESSAY Solar Power as an Efficient Source of Alternative Energy in Canada Most people fundamentally understand that our current energy system is ultimately unsustainable and that renewable energy, including solar energy, will be an inevitable part of our common future. Solar power has become an efficient alternative energy source that results in a cleaner environment, a stronger economy and great freedom in the world, due to energy independence. Solar energy has multitudes of applications
Answers Modern life requires vast amounts of electricity to maintain. Electricity is used industrially, commercially, as well as residentially and consumption of it has tripled in the United States within the past 50 years (U.S. Department of Energy, 2009). Major power outages cause disasters wherever they occur, not only inconveniencing daily life, but crippling emergency response systems, hospitals, and security systems. In extreme climates, electricity is a necessary component of survival as it
