This course is in its twilight, and I wanted to share some thoughts with you right before the screen goes down.
Even though my time in SlS has been only for six weeks I think that this course has truly benefited me because I have learn a great deal from all of the different speakers that have stepped into our classroom along from my professor and peer mentor . They each left me with a new perspective on how I should tackle my goals to be successful. I’ve learned that time management is key in order to get task and assignments done in a reasonable amount of time, proper note taking skills, how to work in groups and do presentations, stress management, financial decisions are also keys things that I have learned. Most importantly what I’ve gained out of this class is networking because its not about who you know its about who knows you. This stood out
Looking back over the course of the semester, I feel that I learned many new and interesting uses for technology within the classroom – both for classrooms that have a lot of technology and for classrooms that are limited with technology. For the majority of the class, we utilized William Kists’ book The Socially Networked Classroom: Teaching in the New Media Age (2010), which provided multiple modes of instruction that both utilized and/or created technology. One of the first things that I remember, and consequently that stuck with me through the course’s entirety, is that individuals must treat everything as a text. Even a garden is a text. The statement made me change the way that I traditionally viewed Language Arts both as a student and as a teacher, as I very narrowly saw literature and works of the like as texts only; however, by considering nearly anything as a text, one can analyze, study, and even expand his/her knowledge. Kist (2010) states that society is “experiencing a vast transformation of the way we “read” and “write,” and a broadening of the way we conceptualize “literacy” (p. 2). In order to begin to experience and learn with the modern classroom and technologically advanced students, individuals must begin to see new things as literature and analyze those things in a similar manner.
A group that was a significant part of my high school identity was Student 2 Student, the drug and alcohol-free club at Glenbrook South. The club’s goal was to create a safe and comfortable environment in which students can abstain from the use of drugs and alcohol while connecting with other people who share the same beliefs as them. Through Student 2 Student, I was able to meet others from GBS that I would have never met, and I was fortunate enough to become acquainted with some of the most supportive people in my life. A social club, Student 2 Student survived because of the familial atmosphere that was created within it. There was a bond shared between the leaders and members, allowing everyone to have fun while making healthy decisions

Before I started this course, I wasn’t aware of the material the course was going to cover. The only thing I knew about the course was that it was going to teach me strategies and methods that will help me assist my English Language Learner students. However, this course covered more than just ELL strategies. By taking different surveys, I found myself being more aware about different myths and stereotypes that our surroundings have implemented in us. We are full of misconceptions and stereotypes, but it is hard for us to noticed because we do not pay attention to this.
I went to my primary care practicum site only once this week because I will be attending VCNP conference this week. Healthworks of Northern Virginia provides comprehensive care to the insured and uninsured patients. There is no requirement of residency and patient pay on sliding fee scale for services regardless of their legal status. This week there was 8 to 9 no shows. This is the maximum number of no shows that I have noticed in last two and half month. When my preceptor inquired about the situation with the manager, we found out that many patients are scared to come due to the fear of new immigration policy. Thus, I was only able to see 6 patients on Monday. I have completed 201 hours for my practicum III. I plan to finish all my practicum
Education can be very messy on a daily basis. I like to view it as something fluid that can be changed often as things arise. Teacher do need to be flexible to be able to adapt plans depending on how quickly the students are getting the concepts, adapt plans if a teacher needs to have a substitute in his/her place, adapt when you find out there is a special assembly that was not communicated in a timely fashion; the list can go on and on. Is it possible that education with co-teaching can be even messier than a more traditional educational setting? I think so in some situations, but in others I think it will be less messy. The area that I am looking for co-teaching to be less messy is when I do have to be out of school due to illness,
Upon reflection of the UNIV 100 course, I realize there are three primary areas that I learned that will assist me in attaining my degree. They are: time management; software and online tools; and critical thinking. First, time management must play a part to be successful. Therefore, I struck a balance and set priorities in my life that included church, family, work, exercise, and rest (The Holy Bible: New International Version, Mat 6.33; 1 Tim 5.8; Heb 4.10). Through the completion of my graduate program in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, I have gained an immense amount of knowledge and a plethora of skills which I have used and found valuable in my seventh grade English classroom. My outlook on student learning and my empathy towards students has also been positively affected by the program. These learning opportunities have led me to become a better educator both inside and outside of the classroom.
This was the first lesson I have taught at CMS and I think it went reasonably well for a first attempt and considering my nervousness. There are, of course, things I would do differently or things that I would have implemented if I had the luxury of a follow up lesson the next day. I felt relieved to have taught this first lesson and now know what to expect for my second lesson with regard to how willing the students are to respond and participate in the lesson and how to pace myself.
Reflecting on a lesson plan and analyzing the effectiveness of the lesson is a crucial part of growth and development as a teacher. It is always important to adequately reflect on if instructional goals were met, if proper instructional materials were available, if the lesson procedures were motivational, and if proper assessments were given. The analysis part addresses the lesson’s effectiveness or to what extent did the students meet the objectives stated in your lesson plan and how do you know? In the lesson, “The Landlady,” I used many forms of assessment to check the student’s understanding of the foreshadowing lesson.
In this course I experienced an important change in my beliefs about teaching; I came to understand that there are many different theories and methods that can be tailored to suit the teacher and the needs of the student. The readings, especially those from Lyons, G., Ford, M., & Arthur-Kelly, M. (2011), Groundwater-Smith, S., Ewing, R., & Le Cornu, R. (2007), and Whitton, D., Barker, K., Nosworthy, M., Sinclair, C., Nanlohy, P. (2010), have helped me to understand this in particular. In composing my essay about teaching methods and other themes, my learning was solidified, my knowledge deepened by my research and my writing skills honed.
A reflection of the work done to date in this course has given me much clarity on the goals that I wish to achieve in my life and the directions that I need to take to achieve them. In module three, I was able to start a financial planning process, in which I was able to determine my current financial situation concerning income, savings, living expenses, and debts through the utilization of a balance and income statement; financial objectives and personal goals sheet. I prepared a list of current asset and debt balances and amounts spent for various items providing me with a foundation for financial planning activities. In module Five, my financial process continued through the evaluation of a home affordability in which I used Maximum Mortgage
