PRINCIPLE K: RESPONSIBILITY TO PARISH/INSTITUTION AND COMMUNITY
Counselors shall utilize all available staff/workers and offer staff members who may be of assistance in aiding a counselee. Counselors shall facilitate workers/surrogate counselors and other counselors who are directly concerned, allowing routine access to all cumulative data except confidential records. Counselor shall maintain the disciplinary, behavioral and emotional records of the counselee in a confidential file - separate and apart from the cumulative file.
Counselors shall avoid soliciting members from other church fellowships and shall have respect for the greater body of Christ by not degrading or slandering other fellowships.
Counselors shall make their services available to all members of the community in which they serve without prejudice to church attendance, religion sex, sexual orientation, ethnic origin or cultural background.
PRINCIPLE L: BENEFICENCE
Counselors develop a preponderance to promote help seeker’s well-being. Counselors actively seek and work for the informed good of help seekers. Good here connote the psychological, emotional, sociocultural, spiritual, relational, somatic and eschatological good of the helpseekers.
PRINCIPLE M: NON-MALEFISCENCE
Counselors avoid harm to help seekers. Counselors prohibit the exploitation of help seekers: counselors do not collude with colleagues, institutions or significant others in doing harm to or circumventing the progress, comfort of help seekers, vulnerable clients incapable of autonomy and take responsibility for dependent clients who are vulnerable to harm?

Chemical dependency counseling involves direct interactions with the clients and as such standards need to be set which will promote safe and accountable counseling. Chemical dependency counseling has a set code of ethics, guidelines and regulations that seek to safeguard the interests of everybody involved. Laws and ethics ensure that everyone acts in a way that does not cause harm to others. Laws and ethics also help to give the profession its credibility. The Licensed Professional Counselors Association of Georgia (2014) gives provisions on the conduct of counselors as stipulated by the law. Chapter 135-7-01 provides the various responsibilities of counselors to their clients. Every counselor has a responsibility to their clients. It is their primary duty to promote the welfare of their clients and meet the client’s best interests.
In Jacquelyn Small’s book “Becoming Naturally Therapeutic: A Return to the True Essence of Helping,” I explored what it takes to be a genuinely helpful counselor. Although I do not intend to pursue a career in counseling, her book touches on various topics that may be used by all individuals. Small provides her readers with a check-list of characteristic ranging from empathy to respect to self-actualization that are virtually essential to becoming therapeutic.

With that in mind the professional has to believe that after all of this is achieved the professional is capable to perform the career with an outstanding background and knowledge on how and when to act and perform the social and personal changes that relies on the profession and always having in mind what is more beneficial to the patient in resolving and responding to their ethical conflicts.

Sometimes individuals consider becoming counselors after overcoming some major life challenge such as addiction or a history of bad relationships. Perhaps an individual has encountered a particularly effective counselor or therapist and has a desire to follow in those footsteps. This model identifies five moral principles which are: justice, autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and fidelity. These fundamental guidelines are used to clarify issues that involve any given situation. Ethical guidelines may not address all situations, but will allow a counselor to explore ethical dilemmas and conflicting issues. Counselors are open-minded and do not pass judgment verbally or physically at anytime while assisting students. Prejudging minimizes responses from distressed or problematic students. Giving advice and assistance should not be based on counselors’ personal opinion. Good counselors will refrain from bias and therefore communicate effective skills to empower students. Counselor should become listeners, observers, and advisers.
Counseling skills has provided me with a valuable insight into the helping relationship and how it is both created and maintained in order to encourage growth and development in the client. The factors involved within the helping relationship include considering Roger’s core conditions, congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathy as the three main characteristics necessary in a helping relationship. In order to fully incorporate all three of Roger’s core conditions, I as the counselor must be self-aware, as a lack of self-awareness may inhibit truly listening and understanding the client; self-awareness can be enhanced through exercises such as Johari’s window. Counseling skills such as body language and active listening also plays a role within encouraging the client to open up and can help me as the counselor convey empathy.

All of the aforementioned ethical issues presented in this paper can be associated to the nature and sensitivity of the professional practice. However, what kind of ethical issue can emerge in a counseling group that is interrelated to a diversity factor that consist of a significant component of identity for many clients? (Cornish, Wade, Tucker and Post, 2014, p. 578). The answer to the aforesaid question is religion or spirituality. Unfortunately, little attention has been paid to religion/spirituality benefits in the framework of group counseling, particularly process-oriented, no- themed groups with diverse participation (Cornish et al., 2014, p. 578).
